5 Tips For Restoring Damaged Summer Hair

by

Say goodbye to sun-kissed skin, bikinis, flip-flops, and day trips to the beach. Summer has left, and cooler weather has arrived! While we’re sad to see the warm weather go, it’s time to focus on revitalizing our strands once again. From swimming in pools and oceans to constantly being in the sun for long periods of time, summer can damage your hair more than you think. We chatted with Cutler Salon owner and stylist Rodney Cutler to help us bring our hair back to life for the cooler weather. Here, Cutler shares his top five tips for restoring damaged summer hair.

Try a Hair Mask
“Deep conditioning is always recommended,” says Cutler. “Try Redken’s pH Bonder Post Service Protector ($16) to moisturize strands and maintain a healthy pH balance. Hair pH should be around 4.4 – 5.5; any higher or lower could cause excess bacteria to build-up or frizz.”

Protect Hair
“Protect hair from further damage with Cutler’s Protectant Treatment Spray ($24). This light treatment detangles, softens, and protects hair from heat styling. A must-have for all hair types!” says Cutler.

Get a Cut
“Get rid of damaged ends and test out a celeb-approved lob for fall.”

Ditch the Elastic
“Give your hair a break from the ponytail,” says Cutler. “During summer months, hair is pulled all over, often tied up multiple times a day with an elastic. Not even the gentlest elastic can prevent breakage caused at the crown from constant pulling.”

Courtesy of Mickey @eightsandnines on Flickr

Braid It Back
“If pulling hair back is a must, opt for a low braid,” says Cutler. “Maintain a natural part instead of tugging hair all the way back. (Bonus tip: before braiding, apply a deep conditioner and leave it in for ultimate hydration.)”

You can find Rodney Cutler and his team of top-notch stylists all over New York City: Cutler Soho, Cutler Salon Park Avenue, Cutler Brooklyn, Licari Cutler Salon, and Licari Cutler at Domenico Vacca.

Makeup Tips From Make-Up Pro

by

There may only be a month of summer left, but sunshine, beaches, flip-flops, and more time to spend with friends is what we’re all about here at Cliché. However, with all this excitement comes sweltering weather. If you’re a beauty guru or wear makeup on a daily basis, you know that this type of weather tends to scare away the thought of wearing any makeup at all. For this reason, we’ve enlisted the help of Cheve Chan and Chika Chan, co-founders of Make-up Pro, to give us pointers on wearing makeup this season. Make-up Pro is a company where clients wear the makeup, not the other way around, giving all women a space for individualism, while providing that “It” factor we all search for.

Cliché: What is considered the traditional path of make-up to you and how do you counteract that by offering creativity to clients?
Cheve Chan: Make-up traditionally is geared towards making people look and feel beautiful. This look and feel varies between different cultures, occasions, and stages in a person’s life. At Make-up Pro, we view beauty not as a cookie-cutter image, but rather to bring out the unique and defining qualities of an individual. Traditionally, in order to look “beautiful,” you had to be born with a certain kind of nose, lips, or smile. In our view, whatever features you possess can be incorporated into a “beauty” that is you.

What inspired you to create Make-up Pro and what motivates you now to continue?
Cheve: Being a minority in the States comes with a sense of being an outsider. While there is much hardship involved in bringing a foreign tradition into a melting pot such as NYC, a primary goal of our brand has been to integrate Eastern and Western looks, techniques, and styles to generate an altogether new culture. During the past 7 years of training over 1,000 students, we have developed collaborations with top brands such as L’Oreal Group, Estee Lauder Group, and LVMH. The opportunity for Make-up Pro to sponsor main-calendar events in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Milan, and Hong Kong drives us to expand our network and our message even further.

Where does your inspiration come from for new looks?
Chika Chan: Exposure to new artists, traveling to unfamiliar destinations, and keeping up-to-date on politics all serve as inspiration for creating a new look. It’s not only clothing designers, but also musicians, visual artists, and dancers; anything emotional, anything meaningful, anything that can be used as a metaphor to influence the final look. Beauty today is all about finding ways to reflect experience through the art of the lashes, lipstick, shadow, etc. to render the art of make-up.

If you could only use one make-up product, what would it be?
Chika: No one product completes a look, but just one product can complete a face. When applying a specific look to multiple models, we emphasize focusing on the main feature of a face. For some faces, the eyes require the most attention, while for others, it’s a matter of applying foundation. While no one product is suitable for all, every person has a product that works magic!

You offer eyes, lips, and face products, along with skin care products. What is the customer’s most-loved product?
Chika: Our most talked-about products are the collagen and eyeshadow. Whereas the collagen contains proteins that help to maintain firmness and moisture in the skin, the shadow is highly pigmented and offers a variety of color options that are customizable to one’s own preferences. Equally essential are our professional brushes, which were carefully selected by myself, and provide quality textures at an affordable price point.

What makes an “It statement” to Make-up Pro?
Cheve: We often encourage our clients and students to “get an inspiration” rather than becoming a replica of some other person. The “It statement” is a way of discovering who you are in order to reach your full potential when applying different styles and looks. Therefore, you can look good in a natural look and you can look good in a dramatic look, too. We believe that make-up should be fun; it is a means for discovering different things about oneself and the world. All ethnicities, sexualities, genders, and ages are invited to come together and share this philosophy.

Summer is trend season. Can you offer any tips on how to keep makeup looking good during the heat?
Chika: First of all, lighten your layers! With hot weather comes sweat, so waterproof products are definitely advised. Avoid shimmer or anything too luminous, unless you want to look extra-shiny. Keep blotting papers close by to soak up any excess oil or perspiration. A good primer helps to hold your make-up in place well into the evening. By then, you should be fine!

Travel Makeup Essentials for Your Summer Getaway

by

As the warm weather creeps up, our itch to travel does, too. Finding the next best vacation to make memories with your friends and family is one of our favorite things to do here at Cliché! Meeting new people, making new friends, experiencing new places, and bringing back souvenirs has us wanting to travel all the time. While traveling can be exciting, it can also come with a headache or two.

Between experiencing delayed flights, paying for all your expenses, packing and repacking bags, fitting all the best attractions into your schedule, and bringing your precious makeup along with you (because how can we leave that at home?) shouldn’t be a headache. While we want to bring our entire makeup bag with us, it’s just not necessary to lug around extra weight and have it take up more space. Not to mention, adhering by TSA’s strict regulations stops us from doing so. Knowing how real the struggle is, we’ve compiled a list of travel makeup essentials for your next vacation and spontaneous getaway. Start booking your next trip now!

Lip Balm/Chapstick
Even if you’re not going to sandy, sunny beaches, lip balm or chapstick is important. Moisturize your lips with a lip balm that has SPF, like Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment Sunscreen. For a cheaper option, try Coola Liplux, both with an SPF of 15. If you’re feeling chapstick, go with Banana Boat Sport Performance Lip Balm, containing SPF 50!

Concealer/CC Cream
Unfortunately, we all don’t have flawless skin. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with blemishes and imperfections, some of us prefer to cover them up with makeup. If you’re going for a quick fix, concealer is your best friend. Try Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof 12-Hour Concealer, which is perfect for when you don’t want your face to melt off. For higher coverage, It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream gives your skin enough coverage to conceal those pesky blemishes without feeling or looking caked on. It even has SPF 50 to protect your skin all day!

Mascara
If there’s one eye product to carry, it’s mascara. A simple, yet noticeable step can really make your eyes pop and face look put together. If you’re looking for waterproof mascara, try out Covergirl LashBlast Volume Waterproof Mascara.

Sunscreen
Even with all the SPF in makeup products, it’s still smart to rub in the actual sunscreen itself. Shop for sunscreens with at least SPF 30, as recommended by dermatologists, like Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF 30.

How to Score Danielle Fishel’s New Summer Cut and Color

by

Celebrity hair stylist Laurie Heaps recently worked her magic on actress Danielle Fishel, who we know as Topanga from Boy Meets World, and it has us inspired to be adventurous in the world of hair this summer! We love a good before and after, so check out Danielle’s Instagram photo below of her hair in Boy Meets World and her new summer cut. Read on to learn how Laurie created this fun, summery look.

Get the Look

To create honey blonde highlights, Laurie added babylights through the roots with some brighter pieces around her face and plenty of blonde balayage on the ends. “For the cut, we added lots of piecey layers, and I took a lot of weight out of the ends for a textured look,” explains Laurie. “Once the cut and color were finished, Danielle wanted me to do something less polished and more undone and effortless looking.”

Here’s how Lauria created Danielle’s hair:

  1. “Danielle has naturally curly hair, so I applied Redken Straight Lissage Align 12 Lotion all over the hair. It strengthens while adding control to your blowout for sleek results.
  2. Next, I blew dry the hair with a large round brush. However, I made sure to take small sections. You will have more control while drying and can smooth each one perfectly straight.
  3. Once dry, I went in and then took larger two-inch sections of hair and sprayed them with White Sands Liquid Texture Medium Hold Thermal Spray. It holds the curl in until you shampoo it out, yet the hair is soft and brushable. It is also thermal intelligent, so the more heat used with an iron, the shinier the hair becomes.
  4. I then wrapped each two-inch section around the DURA CHI 1″ Ceramic Spring Curling Iron, leaving the ends out. It is important to alternate the direction of the hair each time to give a tousled look.
  5. To finish, I took the CHI Original Professional 1″ Ceramic Flat Iron and ran it through the ends and tapped it in areas that looked too curled.”

5 Summer Skin Care Tips

by

Now in the height of summer, it is extremely important to remember that the sun’s strong rays can wreak havoc on your skin, not only on the surface, but deep underneath the surface as well. Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist Jill Caruso is sharing her top five tips to keep you looking your best in the summer and all year long, along with her favorite products* that will help keep your skin protected and healthy!

  1. Use SPF every day

You hear it all the time, and it’s for good reason! SPF protects your skin from damaging UVA/UVB rays so you can have smooth, healthy skin. Use it everyday, not just when you’re heading to the beach or going for a hike; you won’t regret it! Jill recommends using EltaMD UV Elements Broad-Spectrum SPF 44 or SkinMedica Essential Defense Mineral Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 35.

  1.  Don’t forget your lips!

Let’s face it — we often forget about protecting our lips from becoming damaged. This delicate area is just as susceptible to harmful rays, causing them to become dry and sometimes even cracked. If you’re looking to keep your lips safe this summer, try SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator or Colorscience Sunforgettable Lip Shine SPF 35.

  1.  Botox helps prevent wrinkles… and sweat!

“By temporarily paralyzing muscles, you are able to prevent future wrinkles,” Jill says. “This is especially important around the ‘crow’s feet’ area in the summer, when we tend to squint more in the sun. Botox is also used for hyperhidrosis, so you can prevent excess sweat on the forehead, as well as and sweaty armpits!

  1.  Reapply SPF without messing up your makeup!

Who doesn’t love easy and convenient products? Try a brush-on mineral SPF; that way, there’s no excuse to be without protection! Check out Colorscience Sunforgettable Brush-on Sunscreen SPF 50 or Avène High Protection Tinted Compact SPF 50.

  1.  Use nightly fading cream

Since our skin is constantly being exposed to sun during the summer, dark spots are more common. Nightly fading creams help combat these dark spots, leaving your skin flawless and fresh. Some products to try are Clinique Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector and SkinMedica Lytera 2.0 Pigment Correcting Serum.

How to Achieve Dewy Summer Skin

by

Over the past year or so, we have seen many beauty trends come and go. From crazy contouring to shimmery highlighters and matte looks, makeup’s different trends have changed the game. Although trends are constantly evolving, there is one look that stays around forever: dewy skin. Dewy skin makes us look younger and fresher by giving our skin a dazzling glow we all long to have, especially in the summer. So how do you get this look? We’ve listed the best ways and products to achieve dewy summer skin without overdoing it: remember, less is more! Read on to glow all summer long.

The Basics
Before using any products, prepare your skin by cleansing and moisturizing. Without this step, your skin may seem a little dull. Plus, it prevents pimples from forming, making it easier for makeup to be applied. It doesn’t hurt to drink water for clearer, hydrated skin either!
Coconut Oil
We’ve all heard the wonders coconut oil has done for hair, so why should it stop at dewy skin? Use your favorite jar of coconut oil, butter up your fingers, press it into your skin, and voilà! You’ve just achieved a glow that will leave your friends asking what your secret is.
Vaseline
Vaseline isn’t called the original wonder jelly for no reason. Not only is it used for cuts and dry skin, but for that natural glow we’re all seeking. Dab a dime-size amount of Vaseline using your finger onto cheeks, lips, and eyelids. You’ll be surprised as to how good this vintage product works on your skin!

Foundation with Dewy Finish
For those with dry skin, Maybelline’s Fit Me Dewy + Smooth Foundation is for you. With SPF 18 that hydrates and smoothes skin texture, you will be left with a natural, luminous finish. Say goodbye to dry, dull skin for the season and hello to moisture! You could also try Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup. Finding products that don’t contribute to more oil and finding that perfect balance between oily and dewy skin in the summer isn’t so easy. With silky-light coverage and SPF 20, this liquid foundation has become one of my favorites. After applying with a damp sponge, your skin instantly looks and feels fresh without feeling greasy and caked on. Bring on the dew!
Finishing Spray
Lock in and prolong makeup by spritzing a fan favorite product, NYX Dewy Setting Spray. Being lightweight, you won’t feel a thing but dewy all summer long!

The New Matchmaking Site You Should Know About

by

We live in a day and age where finding love is in the palm of your hand. With thousands of dating apps ready to be downloaded, matching with someone is as simple as basic math. A study conducted by Pewter Research Center in 2015 reported that 12% of 55- to 64-year-olds use an online dating site or mobile dating app. While ‘matching’ with someone is essentially effortless, research reports that one-third of online daters on dating apps and websites have not met up in real life with someone they initially found through online services. Although reasons were not listed, I think we could name a few reasons why (think creepy messages and mixed signals).

This was the norm until Three Day Rule. Kiss swiping left or right and waiting for notifications on your phone goodbye, and say hello to Three Day Rule, an online dating service that provides serious singles in search of love with hand-picked, compatible matches who are just as serious as you. Featured in Marie Claire, Fortune, and Good Morning America, Three Day Rule uses facial recognition software, interests, backgrounds, and what you’re looking for to match clients with their best matches. Once you take a short quiz and meet with your personal matchmaker, Three Day Rule searches and meets with candidates that share similar interests with you. “It’s sort of like having someone go on all of your first dates for you, and then sending you all the good ones,” says matchmaker Clancy.

We spoke with CEO and founder of Three Day Rule, Talia Goldstein, on what inspired her to start and how the process of finding a perfect match works.

Cliché: What inspired you to start Three Day Rule?
Talia Goldstein: I was working as a producer at E! Entertainment and noticed that my co-workers were all having trouble finding love.  In my spare time, I would set them up on dates for fun and eventually started hosting singles events all around LA. As the parties grew, I saw that there were so many successful, attractive singles that were struggling with dating. I knew that there was something missing in the market. So, I took a huge leap of faith, quit my job, and started Three Day Rule.
What questions are typically asked by a matchmaker?
We ask the matches the same questions that we ask all of our clients. We ask about their dating history: what worked and what didn’t work in the past.  We talk about their family history, their parents’ relationship, their hobbies and interests, and what type of partner he/she envisions in the future. We’re in the business of making long-term matches so it’s important for us to really understand and get to know each person that we match with our clients.
What types of qualities make a match compatible between two people?
Matchmaking isn’t an exact science. We use intuition coupled with technology to help make successful matches. One trend that we’ve found is that great couples balance each other out; one person is typically the “star” while the other is the “rock.” The “star” is generally extroverted, outgoing, and more of a risk taker, while the “rock” exudes a quiet confidence and is more of a steady, supporting force in the relationship.
So what are you waiting for? Ditch the games and get matched at ThreeDayRule.com today!

6 Foods That Can Help Save Your Skin From Sun Damage

by

We hear it all the time: use sunscreen every day. The benefits of sunscreen are no joke; it protects your skin, reduces wrinkles, and lowers skin cancer risks. But have you ever wondered whether there are other ways we can protect our skin that don’t involve sunscreen? Turns out, there are a range of antioxidant-rich foods that add an extra layer of preventing sun damage. Thanks to Dr. Calapai, a New York City board certified Osteopathic Physician in family medicine and anti-aging medicine, getting all the sun protection we need is easier than ever. Although these foods are beneficial, Dr. Calapai still recommends to use sunscreen daily while adding and consuming these foods to your diet. Read on to explore the list and feel better about protecting your skin!

Berries & stone fruits
“Strawberries, blueberries, and cherries contain high levels of vitamin C, which can reduce free radical damage caused by exposure to UV radiation,” says Dr. Calapai. “Vitamin C also stimulates collagen production, which is important for skin’s youthful appearance. As a bonus, cherries contain melatonin, which protects skin from UV radiation and repairs sunburn damage.”
Leafy greens
“If it’s green and it’s got leaves, chances are it’s good for sun protection,” says Dr. Calapai. “According to one study, spinach, kale, and Swiss chard can reduce the risk of squamous cell skin cancer by 50%. Broccoli is also a good choice: it’s full of sulforaphane, an antioxidant that helps your cells protect themselves against UV radiation. Fresh herbs like parsley, basil, sage, and rosemary are also packed with free radical-fighting, skin-protecting antioxidants.”
Red and orange produce
“The antioxidant lycopene has been shown to protect the skin against sunburn and is at least twice as effective an antioxidant as beta-carotene when it comes to blocking UV light,” says Dr. Calapai. “It also helps rid the body of free radicals. Chow down on tomatoes, papaya, guava, red bell peppers, and pink grapefruit. Watermelon is an especially good choice; it contains 40% more lycopene than tomatoes.”
Microalgae
“Spirulina has been dubbed ‘the next great superfood,’ and for good reason. This microalgae, along with chlorella, contains the antioxidant astaxanthin, which has been shown to protect the skin and eyes against UV radiation,” says Dr. Calapai. “It also fights free radicals and inflammation to prevent sun damage by preventing UV-induced cell damage. If microalgae isn’t exactly your cup of tea, you can find this powerful antioxidant in shrimp and salmon.”
Chocolate
“As long as it’s dark chocolate you’re eating, you’ll be ingesting plenty of flavonoids, which can improve your skin’s ability protect against sunburns and other UV-induced issues,” says Dr. Calapai.  “Research found that people who ate about one ounce of high-percentage dark chocolate every day for three months could withstand twice the amount of UVB rays before their skin started to turn red, compared to those who didn’t.”
Green and black tea
“The myriad health benefits of tea are well-known, but it’s nice to know that the cups you’re drinking can also help protect against sun damage,” says Dr. Calapai. “Green and black teas are packed with polyphenols that can help stop cancer development by limiting the blood supply to the cancerous area. Green tea can even help prevent non-melanoma skin cancer by enhancing DNA repair.”

About the Doctor:

Trends to Take From the Runway to Everyday

by

Now that New York Fashion Week is over, we’re having major post-show feels. The show was one for the books—from athleisure to formal wear, there wasn’t a single moment where our eyes weren’t glued to the beautiful models strutting the trendiest looks across the runway. Our fashion editors were in the front row, snapping pictures of clothes and accessories that are to die for. Fashion designers like Oscar de la Renta, Rag & Bone, and Vivienne Tam blessed the runway this year, giving us major inspiration to upgrade our wardrobes.

Pantone’s Color of the Year has not only made a beauty statement, but a fashion statement as well by releasing ten different spring colors to incorporate and inspire designers and their clothing. The Executive Director of Pantone’s Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, told the editors at WWD.com, “Obviously, that’s a really important part of where the fashion industry is headed. You have to look at things and ask if people would say, ‘I love that color. I want it now.’ For us, it also plays into that whole idea of transitional seasons and offering options that are not just typical of seasons.”
“It seems to me that exponentially it just gets better and better, because there is just so much originality and freedom in the use of color, particularly in the use of combinations,” Eiseman continued. “It’s fun for us to see the extremes, too—from the silly to the sublime. And silly in a good way because it can also be inventive, creative, and eye-catching. You look at all the gorgeous dresses, gowns, and fabrics and that’s all lovely. But when there’s whimsy as well that puts a smile on your face, that’s what fashion is all about.”
With so many different options, it was hard to not be inspired and make a fashion statement this season. Here are some of our favorite beauty looks straight from the runway that you can wear every day.

Bra Tops

Seen at Michael Kors Spring 2017
Stay on trend this season with bra tops; they’re all the rage.

Seen at Bottega Veneta Spring 2017
Classy, chic, and comfortable all in one. Find a pair of slacks and cut off the bottoms to make a rough hem. Top with a leather jacket and bra top for a cool, edgy look.

The Best Spring Nail Trends

by

What isn’t there to love about spring? The trees start to gain their fluff back, flowers begin to bloom beautifully, and both our wardrobe and accessories change. We finally get to swap our heavy winter jackets, sweaters, boots, and scarves for cardigans, t-shirts, jeans, and a pair of comfy flats or sneakers. Here at Cliché, whenever our outfits and nail color match, our day becomes a little brighter.

This year, Pantone’s Color of the Year is Greenery. According to Pantone, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings: “Greenery is a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew. Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxygenate, and reinvigorate. A life-affirming shade, Greenery is also emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality.” How fitting! From green to neutral, this spring is more colorful than ever. We’ve put together this season’s hottest and trendiest nail colors to give both you and your outfit a fresh look. Read on to find your next favorite shade.
Soft Pink
Pink is a staple for spring. Soft pinks match with almost every outfit and accessory we put together. Not to mention, it reminds us of the blossoming peonies all around!
