Do blue light glasses actually work or are they all hype?

While blue light glasses may be the perfect Zoom essential, there’s been some question on whether or not they actually work. Some say they’re just for show, some say they’re for people who don’t really need glasses but want to wear them to look smart (guilty). But what really sparked my interest in the hype for blue light glasses was when I learned what blue light actually was. Turns out, it’s not so good for you. And after looking at my weekly screen time, I figured investing in a pair or two wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

As somebody who spends over five hours a day staring at a screen, I noticed my eyes felt heavier, my headaches were becoming unbearable, and when I started to drift off in the middle of my favorite Netflix series, I knew something was wrong. Naturally, I went straight to Amazon and ordered a pair that resonated with me most, the tortoise cat-eye shape and style of course, and within those two days of prime shipping, I was researching the benefits. Here’s what I found:

What is blue light?

According to Blutech, blue light is a high energy light vision that can be seen by the human eye. Turns out, it’s not just on your smartphone. Blue light is everywhere, even in the sky!

Should I be concerned about blue light?

Blutech says, “blue light flickers easier and longer than other types of weaker wavelengths. This flickering casts a glare that reduces your visual contrast, affecting clarity and sharpness. This can cause eye strain, physical and mental fatigue and headaches if you use your electronic devices or sit in front of a computer all day.”

What symptoms prove I should probably wear blue light glasses?

The American Optometric Association says the most common symptoms of digital eye strain (also known as computer vision syndrome) are eye strain, headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes and neck and shoulder pain. Yikes– I have all those!

What are the benefits of wearing blue light glasses?

For Eyes says the top three benefits of wearing blue light glasses are that they relieve eye discomfort, you get a better night’s rest, and they can help reduce your risk of blindness. In other words, blue light glasses can’t hurt.

What are the best brands?

Blue light glasses can range anywhere form $15 – $100. Who’s to say what brand is best? But if you’re still a little skeptical, I would advise you first try out a pair from a small-brand on Amazon, then work your way up to a more expensive pair if you feel they are a great addition to your work from home routine. Here’s the under $20 duo pair I started off with and they’re still a fan favorite.

All the CBD questions you’ve been reluctant to ask have been answered by a professional.

It’s safe to say that this year has not gone like we planned. Surely there were some ups and downs, but as 2020 is wrapping up and coming to an end, we at Cliché  want to make sure you end the year on a chill note.

As if the physical stress of the coronavirus pandemic wasn’t bad enough, now different forms of stress are starting to show up on my skin. Dry patches, itchiness, redness, and irritationThat’s where I draw the line. It wasn’t long before I learned that there’s a way to reduce my stress levels and calm the side effects shown on my skin. The answer? CBD.

Fun fact: CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects may help soothe dry skin and help hydrate. Whether it be infused gummies, edible oils, or sunscreens and serums, this market is redefining how we relax. After the year we’ve had, I think we all could infuse a little chill to our lives. The 2020 CBD survey conducted by Single Care reported that 45% of current CBD users have increased their use of CBD since the global coronavirus pandemic, (wow!)

After doing some extensive research on this hot commodity item, it turns out this multi-billion dollar industry is not just another health and wellness fad inspired by the marijuana industry it’s here to stay. And since it’s not going anywhere anytime soon, we all better get comfortable asking some pretty uncomfortable questions. I took the liberty of putting together a very digestible Q&A with a CBD pro to answer all those questions that you might feel a little weird to ask or research about.

Amy McDonald, President and CEO of Alternative Biologics (also known as ALTWELL), has worked in the flavor, food ingredient and pharma/biotech industry for over 25 years. She has led multi million-dollar global companies to success and built herself a career in the CBD world. Lucky for you, this #bosswoman is here to talk about all things CBD, including how to incorporate CBD products into your daily beauty routine and how to determine if CBD is right for you.

Check out my Q&A with Amy McDonald below.

What does CBD stand for, and what is it?

CBD stands for “cannabidiol”, which is just one of the many cannabinoids found in hemp. CBD is non-intoxicating and has been associated with many health and wellness benefits. Cannabinoids have been used for centuries and they interact with the endocannabinoid system in our bodies which is associated with these compounds.

What is CBD compared to THC?

CBD and THC are cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, but they are very different. THC is the psychoactive component found in hemp, while CBD is non-intoxicating and non-psychoactive, so it will not make you high.

What is the difference between hemp and hemp seed oil? Are they the same?

They are not the same! Hemp seed oil is produced by and extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant, which does NOT contain CBD. CBD is extracted from the whole hemp plant, mainly the flower itself.

Will CBD alter my state of mind?

It certainly may! We’ve heard many positive reviews from our customers that CBD helps calm their nerves, reduces anxiety and gives them an overall sense of calm and balance. Something we all need these days! CBD will not alter your mind the way that THC does; it is non-intoxicating.

What are the health benefits of CBD?

We’ve heard a variety of positive feedback from people who have incorporated CBD into their daily lives. Some report that CBD helps manage anxiety, improves sleep, eases physical discomfort or muscle pain, reduces inflammation and lessened PMS or menopause symptoms.

Can I give my dog CBD to calm down?

We have definitely heard of many instances where CBD was helpful for pets with anxiety and other issues. Check with your vet to see about a good treatment plan for your furry friend!

What are some of the different ways I can use CBD?

The possibilities seem endless! Ingestibles are very common, either through a gummy or a softgel/capsule, or even more creatively ALTWELL has a protein powder with CBD, so you can have it in your morning or post-workout shake! Tincture is another really popular ingestible, which is CBD mixed with a carrier oil (like MCT). You use CBD tincture with a dropper bottle, and place a few drops under your tongue (sublingually). You can also use CBD topically, in a Sports Balm or lotion/cream, as well as beauty products like serums. CBD is often available through vape/inhalation products. How much should I take?

This differs person to person and truly there is no magic answer. We like the saying “start low and go slow”, meaning start with a small dose and stay consistent for a week or so to see how you feel. Then make tiny adjustments up or down until you find the right amount for you.

What time of day should I take it?

This also greatly differs by personal preference. Some prefer taking CBD in the morning to start their day off in the right direction. Others take it a few times throughout the day as needed to help stay balanced and even keeled, no matter what the day entails! Evening or bedtime is a popular time where CBD may help you relax and drift off to sleep.

What role does CBD play in the beauty industry?

CBD in beauty products are popping up everywhere! It has been said that CBD can help minimize redness & inflammation by providing antioxidants and helps with hydration. Some have even said it helps fight acne. For these reasons, many brands have been exploring adding CBD to everyday beauty products, such as creams, lotions, serums, masks, you name it.

I have dry skin, does CBD help certain skin conditions such as eczema and dry skin?

CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects may help soothe dry skin and help hydrate. We have a few people in our office who swear it helps with itchy skin as well! One of downsides of the changing weather.

How can I incorporate CBD into my beauty routine?

To see if CBD could have some of these positive effects on your skin, we’d suggest trying out one CBD beauty product and seeing how your skin reacts. Don’t swap EVERY beauty product you use for a CBD infused version – take it slow and go from there!

Are there negative side effects to CBD?

According to, CBD is generally well tolerated but some of the side effects could be dry mouth, reduced appetite, drowsiness and fatigue.

Why is CBD so expen$ive?

CBD has a complex supply chain, a multiple-step harvest and extraction process, and several important testing regimes…. And this is all before the CBD itself is even put into the ingestible or topical end-product.  For example, at ALTWELL we test each product at least three times before it is on the shelf and available for you to purchase.  CBD is available at many price points, and we encourage you to do your research.  Look for a CBD product with transparency and even a Certificate of Analysis of 3rd party testing results that can be found online. Find companies that utilize child-resistant packaging.  Keep an eye out for those that use hand-picked flower versus traditional farming methods meant for crops like wheat and corn.  All these things make a difference in efficacy and quality.

Panic mode, I’m new to this! What brands do you recommend?

We have quite a laundry list of questions to ask yourself before deciding which CBD brand to purchase from. Has this company done this before? Are they nutrition / supplement professionals? Do they test their products and do they believe in transparency (i.e. sharing their testing results with you). Our team at ALTWELL has worked in food and beverage manufacturing for decades, where safety and regulatory excellence are expectations. We also triple test our products through a third party lab, and make all testing results available for the consumer to review through our website.

Tell us a little bit about ALTWELL.

ALTWELL was founded by the Pickett family who have been in the wellness industry for years, best known for creating and selling the Muscle Milk brand of sports nutrition products. They were intrigued by the benefits of CBD but could not find a brand that met their standards. ALTWELL was born! We’ve created a line of honest, simple products that meet the highest standards of quality and taste. Our mission is helping people live their healthiest and most balanced lives naturally.

Sounds great, where can I buy ALTWELL?

Craving Simplicity in Your Skincare Routine? Try This

Are you ever curious to know what’s really in your skincare products? You deserve to know what you’re putting on your face every night. If you’re somebody who has an allergy or skin condition, you would understand the same struggle I have of trying to find products that can be applied to sensitive skin. Every time I turn the bottle around to look at the list of one million ingredients, I see words like glycerin, ethylhexyl palmitate, and cocamidopropyl. I don’t mean to be blunt, but what the f*@#! does that mean?

There’s nothing worse than reading the fine print of a beauty bottle and seeing hundreds of fancy words that are not only a little intimidating, but also a little scary. All-in-all, I’m just tired of using products that simply aren’t helping me no matter how hard I try or how often I use them. Say this part with me, “I want to know what I am applying to my face every night, I want to see brands use natural supplements, and I want to be able to read the ingredients in a way that I can understand!”

In order to keep my frustrations to a minimum, I started doing some research on affordable, natural facial products that will bring some simplicity to my skincare routine. But first, I had to give myself a reality check. Do I really need all of these products that are in my drawer? No more empty bottles and no more free testers— we are cleansing more than just our skin today. Say goodbye to all the products you’re keeping around because you (and I quote) “think you might use one day.” Girl, get rid of it.

Harsh love comes with a piping hot side of reality, so truly I am sorry to be the one who has to give it to you. The truth is, you don’t need all of those lotions (even if they were on sale, *insert heart breaking emoji*). After stage one is complete, you get to move onto stage two, research. Lucky for you, I’ve taken it upon myself to do the hard part for you. Here are the best natural and organic makeup and skincare brands I’ve found so far.

Image provided by Milk.

Milk Makeup has been a favorite of mine for years. I love how they spell out in digestible terms for their customers exactly what’s in their products, while heavily emphasizing they’re a vegan brand. This Vegan Milk Moisturizer has four main ingredients; Desert Milk, Fig Milk, Oat Milk, and Argan Milk. I guess now I know why they call it Milk Makeup!

100% PURE Beauty has a complete line of natural fruit pigmented makeup, wellness, skincare, hair and body products. Their Puristry Flower Water Toner is natural, vegan, gluten free, and cruelty free. Its main ingredients like rose water, witch hazel, and calendula reduce irritation and inflammation, all while balancing your oil control.

The last brand I am going to show you is Tula. This Tula Milk Cleanser does wonders for people who experience dry patches and itchy skin because it contains a very special ingredient called Colloidal Oatmeal, which soothes your skin and helps retain its moisture. Tula also has a section on their website where you can find what products and ingredients work best for you based on your personal skin concerns. Take the skin quiz here!

Thanks Tik Tok for introducing me to the perfect fall beverage.

Don’t show up empty handed to this weekend’s cocktail hour. As Halloween is creeping up quickly, trying to find the perfect fall beverage that everyone will love can seem impossible. It wasn’t until one crisp, fall evening where a Tik Tok notification appeared out of nowhere and it turned out to be my saving grace. No longer am I worried about what to bring to the next holiday party this season because the ingredients to this easy to follow, step-by-step Tik Tok cocktail are already in my pantry. Introducing, the ultimate fall old fashioned.

This fall beverage satisfies that evening sweet tooth without having to indulge in all the candy. It’s combination of mulling spices and apple cider gently cuts out the bitter aftertaste that some of us newly-whiskey drinkers don’t long for. Although some don’t like to admit it, I’m not ashamed to say I prefer a sweet and decorated cocktail. That’s why this Halloween is the perfect excuse to step up your autumn cocktail game and get creative because this is too easy to pass up.

No bartender training necessary. Yep— that’s right! Even a cocktail rookie could perfect this recipe in just one take. All you have to do is follow the five steps below and watch @spiritedla’s Tik Tok for some fall-themed inspiration.

Happy bourbon season.🍁🥃 #fyp #bourbon #makeadrink #oldfashioned #daydrinking #fall #howto

♬ Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree – Glenn Miller

Here’s what you need:

1 Cup of Apple Cider

1 Cup of Brown Sugar

1/4 Cup of Mulling Spices

2 1/2 oz of Bourbon

A Dash of Orange Bitters

OPTIONAL: Apple Slices, Orange Slices, Cinnamon Stick

After you’ve assembled all your ingredients, you’re going to start by making a syrup. Gather your finest pot, add a cup of fresh apple cider to a simmer and then slowly add in a cup of brown sugar.

Once that is mixed together in the pot, add in a quarter cup of mulling spices and allow the mixture to simmer for five minutes while stirring occasionally.

Once your timer goes off, strain the mixture into a glass and allow it to cool.

In a separate glass filled with ice, add in half an ounce of the syrup mixture and two and a half ounces of the bourbon of your choosing.

In that same glass, add in two dashes of apple and two dashes of orange bitters. Stir well before pouring and garnishing!

For optional garnishing, you can add sliced apples or oranges to perfect that dreamy, fall old fashioned!

Thanks @spiritedla for the tip, enjoy!

Thanks to Rare Beauty, my skin has never been so hydrated.

Finding the perfect skincare routine doesn’t come easy— especially when it comes to testing out beauty products. It can take ages of dabbling around with different brands before you find your perfect match. Nowadays, there are so many options available, how do you choose?

Rare BeautyWhat’s most important is that you find a product that hydrates your skin and not damages it. That’s why I like Selena Gomez’s newly released makeup line, Rare Beauty. I was first in line to try it out at Sephora, and sure enough, my intuition was correct.

I have never had a better experience with any makeup brand than I’ve had with Rare Beauty. Having dry skin can stand in the way of finding true beauty-love, but Selena’s dermatologist tested and sensitive skin approved formulas have given me hope for a better brand. Each product is silky smooth, lightweight, and it stays on all day. If you’re someone who is looking for a change in your beauty routine, let me be the first to recommend Rare Beauty. Take a look to see what makes these products ultra-hydrating and extra soothing.

Over the course of her beauty launch, two new eyeshadow palettes have been released and fingers crossed, more is in the works. As excited I am for more products to launch, I have always been driven back to one of her original top-seller products, the Dewy Lip Balm. Say goodbye to dry, chapped lips because inside the Dewy Lip Balm is a botanical blend of lotus, gardenia, and white water lily that ensures maximum moisture and soothed, nourished lips. For just $16, you can choose from a variety of seven shades that will achieve a sheer, soft shine.

I’ve tried many setting sprays in my lifetime, but this Always An Optimist 4-In-1 Mist combines all things necessaryRare Beauty to a healthy, hydrated skincare routine. It includes; Niacinamide, a complexion brightener and pore diminisher, Sodium Hyaluronate, natural skin plumper and hydration layer, a Botanical Blend of lotus, gardenia, and white water lily which soothes, calms, and nourishes the skin, and lastly, Panthenol, a skin strengthening barrier. If you ask me, spending $24 on the 4-In-1 mist will save you from buying loads of other skincare products that help treat dryness, irritation, and other blemishes.

If you still need some convincing on whether Rare Beauty is right for you, the brand has a sustainability plan to gradually introduce post- consumer recycled materials into their packaging in 2021. A beauty line that cares about your skin and the planet? That sounds like the perfect routine. Get yours now online at, or at your local Sephora store.
