Landis Mason didn’t know the extensive gift he brought in to the world by creating the Mason jar back in 1858. This transparent glass container with its threaded screw on lid has become a staple within many homes. Originally used for preserving goods such as green beans, peaches and jelly, this economically beneficial Tupperware of sorts was a coveted possession to any housewife or farmer. With its vast capabilities and traditional physique, today the Mason jar proves not only as a delightful kitchen tool, but also a thrilling vehicle for a slew of homemade crafts.

It’s summer and we all know what that means. Days spent at backyard barbeques and nights spent working on the smoky residue of campfire on our pillows. Ah, that wonderful campfire life. It doesn’t take much besides the warmth of the fire, a semi-comfortable lawn chair, cold beer and probably bug spray to make you sigh happily. But we must not forget the one crucial component to summer-time fire-sitting – the peanut butter to the campfire’s jelly: The S’more.
The simple marshmallow-chocolate on graham cracker sandwich. Yes, this goddess of dessert doesn’t need any alterations to deliciously satisfy you. However, if you’re looking for a way to kick your s’more game up a notch and blow your friends minds, here are a few gooey-good ideas: The Indoor S’more

Interested in learning more? From the stash, we’ve narrowed down the supply to our Top 5 favs! POPchips (in Sour Cream and Onion) – $1.39 per single-serve bag Let’s be honest—snacking during the summer is practically inevitable. While attending cookouts and barbeques, you’ll reach for something salty to go along with your burger or hotdog, and while venturing out on long road trips, your stomach will growl greedily for a snack between bathroom stops. So instead of reaching for that bag of boring fried chips, try the low-calorie and healthier, popped alternative, POPchips! Our Summer 2014 box came with the Sour Cream and Onion flavor (a personal favorite), and we savored every airy, light, crispy bite. At only 100-130 calories per bag and packed with flavor, feel free to shamelessly snack away (and prepare to share). Zoya Nail Polish (in Thandie) – $9 per bottle Being the nail polish lover that I am, I couldn’t resist trying out the Zoya nail polish from the box first. Used by professionals across the country, this vegan-friendly formula is not only long-lasting, but is even safe for your nails when you are expecting! We received the shade “Thandie,” a vibrant, creamy orange, and immediately fell in love. Second only perhaps to coral, orange is definitely the perfectsummer shade. After first applying a base coat, it only took one coat of color for the varnish to completely cover and shine. Apply this shade to toenails (paired with a set of brown strappy sandals) and fingernails (go crazy with stackable rings) and you’re ready for the boardwalk! pur~lisse pur~protect SPF30 – $55 per 1.7 oz tube If summer means anything at all, it means sunshine, and we at Cliché are very serious about protecting our skin from those burning, harmful rays. Sure, basking in the sun for hours and hours sounds and feels like the perfect remedy after a long winter, but sunscreen is a very important step in that enjoyment (after all, getting sunburned after all that basking isn’t fun). Cue pur~lisse pur~protect moisturizer, the perfect protection for your skin. Why do we love this so much? Not only is it super moisturizing for your face, but it’s also packed with SPF30, meaning extra coverage from the sun’s rays! This lightweight, anti-aging formula is your two-in-one summer essential. Sonya Dakar Flash Facial – $95 per 1 oz bottle
Since we are awfully big on skincare here at Cliché (as mentioned above), it’s no surprise this Flash Facial from Sonya Dakar made our Top 5 list. Cherished by celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow herself (you have to admit she’s got one of the most glowing complexions in Hollywood), this one-minute exfoliating treatment promises instant results. After applying onto your clean face for 6o seconds, you’ll witness noticeably softer and plumper looking skin. Sound too good to be true? Try it out yourself (or, you know, just look at Gwyn)! Thursday Friday Away Mini Clutch – $35 Well, now you need somewhere to stash all your summer travel essentials, right? And it has to be cute, right? Well, look no further, because the Summer 2014 box comes with this adorable Thursday Friday Away Mini Clutch, which easily doubles as a makeup bag. A miniature version of their best-selling away bag, this cute accessory is not only practical, but stylish, too! The inside is lined with nylon and has a metal zip closure, and let’s not forget the adorable electric blue statement purse print on the front! Seal all your cherished cosmetics away in style.

Wedding plans seem to be in the back of every girls mind; whether you’re a bride-to-be, a bridesmaid, or simply a girl getting ideas for her long awaited “someday.” It’s the someday we dream about as little girls that builds up to our own personal fantasy we hope to one day fulfill. We research rings, dresses, colors and venues just for fun, and many of us have our fairytale planned out before we’ve even found Prince Charming or own a home of our own!
Although times change and styles cycle in and out, if you’re fantasizing about your big day, here are a few wedding theme ideas that never go out of style.
New York, San Francisco, Chicago, DC – if you’re a city girl, you want to incorporate the bright lights and excitement in to your big day. Not only does the city provide various venues from water front’s to romantic roof-tops, but the ever changing landscape makes each picture unique. Before the wedding, jot down your favorite places in the city you love, and make sure to hit those with your photographer. If trendy, fast-paced, modern makes your feet dance and your heart melt, a city-themed wedding is exactly what will make your fairytale come true. 2. Rustic
You may have grown up in a rural area, or you may just crave the quiet, clean and open spaces that the country provides. Either way, the rustic setting is perfect for your wedding. From wheat in your bouquet, to mason jar-center pieces, to flower head bands for your bridesmaids – your country-chic wedding is sure to make your audience sigh. If rustic calls your name, track down a barn or even a winery that is willing to host you. Bring paper lanterns and even ask if you can use the horses for a photo-op! If yellow sun-sets over wheat fields makes you want to cry, make your wedding rustic-themed in order to fulfill your dream. 3. Nautical
For some girls, the water is where they feel most at home. There is something about standing on the shore and looking out over the deep blue that fills the heart to overflowing. If the thought of salty breeze and sand in your shoes gives you butterflies, then your wedding must be nautical. Think about renting out a yacht or walking down the aisle on the beach. With these options, you have the flexibility of dressing up your party or going casual-bare-foot, whatever suits your style. Try to plan your pictures for sunset so that you capture the warm natural light in contrast with the crisp water, and your day will surely be one to remember. If the natural, clean, simple boater look makes you tip your hat in approval, choose a nautical theme for your wedding and you won’t be disappointed.

I hate to break it to you, but those “rainy day blues” people always talk about…they exist. Not all of us are so fortunate as to welcome the rain with open arms. Most of us greet those looming dark clouds on the horizon with an immediate frown. True, it’s likely that this summer your exciting plans have been rained out at least once, and you were probably at a loss for what to do, resorting to New Girl re-runs on Netflix. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes that’s exactly what you need. But next time you’re stuck inside, rain hitting the windows and lightning keeping you out of the pool, remember these activities to liven up your rainy day. 1. Beautify
As if we need an excuse to throw ourselves a spa party. Use the unhurried afternoon to catch up on your extra-hygienic needs that usually get shoved under the rug with a busy schedule. While listening to your favorite music, give yourself a manicure and pedicure. Bathe with Epsom salt, lather with coconut oil, and treat your hair with Moroccan Argan Oil. By the end of your relaxing evening, you will wish for the rain every day. 2. Redecorate
Know that spare bedroom you haven’t gotten around to painting? Or how about the bathroom that still has wallpaper up from the 90’s? When you’re stuck inside, you have nothing better to do but to pour over Pinterest and Pottery Barn catalogues. Gather ideas during your indoor afternoon and plan to reconstruct during the next monsoon. When your living space finally matches the idea you have in your head, you will thank yourself for turning your rainy day frown upside down. 3. Encourage
The art of hand-written letters, lost on our generation, is in dire need of resurrection. What better opportunity will you find to dig out your old stationary and thin sharpie pens to give it a go? Try thinking of five people you haven’t spoken to in a while. The dreary weather will bring out your sappy side, as you write to old friends who you love and miss. Not only does letter-writing boost morale, but it reconnects us with people in a more intimate, genuine way than Facebook or Skype ever could.

Whether you are having a few friends over for a small gathering, a party full of buffet food (healthy options always available) or even staying in to watch movies with buddies, there are plenty of snacks and delights to put on the table. Take a look at these Kraft recipes if you need any more ideas. Watermelon fruit bowl
This is probably one of the easiest and most eye-catching ideas. Simply carve out half a watermelon and fill with all your favorite fruit.
You should try to keep to a rainbow effect in the watermelon bowl, for example green grapes followed by red grapes, followed by some of the carved out watermelon. Pineapple, blueberries and bananas are a nice colorful addition to this fruit bowl rainbow too. Build your own wrap
At parties, not everyone has the same tastes. For example if you make a plate of sandwiches you can’t be certain everyone will like the combinations laid out. So, put out a selection of wraps (wholewheat and white), with a wide selection of fillers to keep everyone happy. Pasta makes perfect
Who can beat a big bowl of pasta? Bring your plate and fill up. Some popular and tasty ideas are chicken and pesto (throw some olives in too if you want to risk that ‘olive debate’), tuna mayonnaise with fresh chopped beetroot, and some added extras, like sweetcorn and onion. Cocktail sticks
No, not just the wooden sticks. Get creative if you’re worried about laying out some cheese and pineapple (although you really can’t go wrong with that option). Try making them into mini kebabs using either fruit or a meaty savory option. A fantastic combination is sausage meat with a roasted cherry tomato. Egg bruschetta
Hard-boil some eggs, chop them in half and cover with finely chopped tomatoes, onion and basil. It’s that simple. Naughty but nice
A sweet treat always wins at a party. If you can’t afford a chocolate fountain, why don’t you melt some dark chocolate in a saucepan, dip your strawberries so they are half covered, then leave them to set in your refrigerator. Be warned, you will have to make a lot of these, for obvious reasons. A healthy option is to use yogurt and then freeze. You can also try the same method but with cherries! Cake dough lollipops
Making a perfect cake isn’t always easy. The disappointment is huge when you go to take your baked cake out of the oven and it promptly sinks right in the middle. So to avoid this untimely death of a cake, why not make your favorite cake, bake it as normal then rip into it and start making it into little balls?
Yes this might sound crazy, but if you pop these chunks of cake on a stick then coat in frosting, you’ve got yourself some easy cake pops.
The bonus is that you aren’t clearing up endless cake crumbs after your party because there are no slices to cut.
Summer is such a great time of year when it comes to dating because there are so many possibilities. You don’t have to be stuck inside because the weather is nice, which is such a plus! There are so many fun outdoor activities you can do. Keep reading for some of my favorite summer dating activities. 1. Zoo Date If you’re an animal lover like I am, then the zoo is a perfect date! Nothing is more fun than looking at those cute, little, furry guys with someone you like. When the weather is nice during the summer and all the animals are out: AHH, SO FUN! There are great zoos all over the country for all you animal loving couples out there! 2. Beach/Lake Date If you’re on the east coast or west coast, nothing is more romantic than a beach date! If you don’t live near the ocean, lakes are fun and can be a romantic spot for a date. There are so many great restaurants on the beach to go to, or if you’re the cooking type, why not make a meal and picnic on the beach as the sun sets? 3. Baseball Game Date Now I know some of you are probably thinking, “why would I want to go to a baseball game?” But believe me, they’re actually really fun! I was always into playing sports and not much into watching them on TV, but when you go to an actual game, it’s completely different. Going to a stadium and watching the game live is super exciting, and if you’re not into the game itself, they have great food. If you’re of age, you can always enjoy a good drink during a hot summer day or evening. The atmosphere of a major league or even minor league baseball game is a great setting for a summer date! 4. Bike Ride/Hike Date For those of you who are the active type or maybe those of you who want to become the active type, a nice bike ride or hike is a perfect date. Not only is it fun, but it’s also good exercise! You can find great trails all over the country. Some of you may think hiking could be boring, but try it before you scratch it off the date list. You never know, you might love it! A couple that hikes/bikes together, stays together. 5. Amusement Park Date I love amusement parks and I know that I personally would love for someone to take me there on a date. Amusement parks can get a little pricey though, especially when it comes to food. If you’re on a budget or just cheap like I am, pack hoagies and drinks in a cooler and go back out to your car for lunch! It’s such a fun summer day date! Nothing says fun like a picture of you two on a roller-coaster screaming your heads off together!

Having trouble getting a morning routine going? We all know the struggle: our heads hit the pillow at different times each night and we just can’t seem to rise at the first beep of our alarm. For some, it’s simply more sleep you crave; yet, for others, you just don’t have anything to look forward to in the morning. A morning routine acts as motivation to spring out of your fluffy covers and start your day with productivity.
H2O, that is. In the morning, our bodies are dehydrated and craving a splash of nature’s miraculous cure-all: water. Add a few slivers of lemon to cleanse you internal system. The benefits of drinking water are enormous and include glowing skin, a balanced lymph system, renewed cells, and weight loss. After establishing “water-first” as a habit, your body will thank you, and reach for the glass without even thinking twice. 2. Bend
Starting your day with twenty minutes of light yoga will do wonders for your mood, flexibility and overall appearance. Not only does daily yoga add strength and flexibility to your body, it improves brain function and lowers stress level. You should also note that a few months of consistent yoga provides relief from chronic back pain, improved sense of balance, heightened libido, and lowered risk of heart disease! 3. “Om”
You may be thinking, I just got up from lying on my butt for 8 hours, and now you want me to relax? It’s true, your body may be feeling refreshed from your night of much needed zzz’s, but you have neglected to massage the knots out of your anxious mind. By starting the day with, at the very least, 15 minutes of meditation, you will have center and focus for the day to come. Find a quiet place, away from kitchen-clanking and talking house-mates. And be sure to make this place your own; by adding pillows, candles, and fostering your meditation spot with respect, over time you will begin to feel centered upon entering your personal haven.

Hopefully this summer you and your boo are spending a whole lot of much needed, hot-heated time together. If you’re like me, you’re all about the quality time, but not about to bleed your wallet dry on fancy restaurant bills and over-priced movie tickets. There are plenty of ways to create romantic, memory-making evenings together right in the comfort of your own home. Here are three solid ingredients to keep your casual summer nights together hot, humid and exciting:
1. Wine and Chocolate Tasting
Nothing goes better together than wine, chocolate and getting you in the mood! If the weather is nice, the sky is clear, and you have a few citronella candles – take your party to the backyard. Feed each other chocolate piece by piece under the magnificent July sky and you’ll be well on your way to stirring each other’s souls. Dark chocolate lovers? Try Dark LINDOR Truffles $3.00 at Walmart and be amazed. 2. Massage
The next ingredient on the list is a thoughtful, scorching massage. After a long day at work, or even a harsh day at the beach, your muscles will be screaming for sizzling relief. Put on some soothing music, like Spa Pandora and melt away. And remember the oil! Try Organix Dry Body Oil, Hydrating Moroccan Argan Oil $7.99 at Walmart. It smells heavenly and feels even better. Not sure how to give a good massage? Be sure to check out this tutorial for helpful tips on how to give your boo a massage to remember: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xpfvmi_how-to-give-a-full-body-massage_lifestyle 3. Read to Each Other
I know, I know, it sounds lame. But don’t knock it till you try it. The final ingredient to your night to remember is a good, old fashioned book. Whip out the pillows and candles and left-over wine, relax from your massage, and slip away in to a fictional world. Depending on your personal taste, you’ll choose from the vast array of literature available to you through your local library or personal bookshelf. This is a unique, intimate way to end your night and grow closer to each other in both interest and physical distance. The rest is history!

So you’re the one throwing a barbeque this year. Your chairs are packed and you’re ready to head off to the local July Fourth Parade, knowing that shortly after the bagpipes and fire engines pass, you’ll be scrambling back home to prepare for company. If you’re an old pro at the game, you know the ins and outs of humid-holiday-barbeque. But if you’re wondering how to ensure the town raves about this year’s barbeque for years to come, be sure to tackle these tips! 1. Cater to the Foodies
Most likely, those attending your get-together will be expecting some type of alcoholic beverage, and nothing says Fourth of July like home-made Sangria. Check out this “Best Party Sangrea Recipe” recipe from Stacy Slinkard at wine.about.com
1 Bottle of red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Rioja, Zinfandel, Shiraz)
1 Lemon cut into wedges
1 Orange cut into wedges
1 Lime cut into wedges
2 Tbsp sugar
Splash of orange juice or lemonade
2 Shots of gin or triple sec (optional)
1 Cup of raspberries or strawberries (may use thawed or frozen)
1 Small can of diced pineapples (with juice)
4 Cups ginger ale
In addition to rich sips, your friends and family will all admit that half the reason they came over is grilled meat. Rather than the typical hamburger/hot dog duo, impress your friends with these Kraft Sweet BBQ Chicken Kebabs.
1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-1/2-inch pieces
2 cups fresh pineapple chunks (1-1/2 inch)
1each red and green pepper, cut into 1-1/2-inch pieces
½ cup KRAFT Original Barbecue Sauce
3 Tbsp. frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed 2. Liven Things Up!
Although your red-white-and-blue clad friends will be content chatting it up on the deck, you’ll gain major points when you whip out the lawn games. Croquet, horseshoes and “bags” are well-loved, and can be played by kids and adults alike. Be sure to consider the weather, too, when preparing the fun. Have games set out inside, like a deck of cards, Bananagrams, or Apples to Apples – just in case rain decides to join the party. 3. Make Sure Sparks Fly
When everything is said and done, your friends are in high spirits, and you’re done fussing over refilling the ice bucket, it’s time to relax under a star filled sky. Set up a safe place in the lawn or street, clear from trees and traffic, and be sure to have at least 15 solid minutes of fireworks at your disposal. Then hand off fire-work duty to a trusted friend or family member – now’s your time to kick back. Afraid of what the neighbors might say? Invite them to join in too! Fourth of July without fireworks is like Christmas without Santa – it’s simply impossible.

There have always been dueling opinions from beach vets and tourists alike on what’s acceptable to bring to the beach. After many experimental visits, a few suggestions, and trial and failure – here is my fool-proof list of items to bring in order to have a perfect sun soaking, sand stepping beach day. 1. Sitting Options
Some go for the bare minimum and grab a towel, but I suggest bringing at least two sitting options to the beach. Snag a beach chair and lay a blanket in front. The blanket will preferably be made of a cool, tight-woven fabric, so as to avoid unnecessary sand sticking and sweat. This way you’ll be able to sit comfortably to watch the waves, and stretch out on the blanket at your leisure to steal a few rays on your back. 2. Moisture Mends
If you’ve been to the beach, you know the toll it takes on your lips, skin and hair. To counter the salt and sun, bring your favorite chapstick and sunscreen. I suggest Neutrogena Fresh and Cooling Body Mist Sun Block SPF 45– which has cooling affects that keep you feeling fresh no matter what the temperature outside. For extra sparkle, pack a spray bottle with fresh water and spritz it on your skin whenever the sun gets too warm. 3. Refreshments
Finally, you’ll need something to sweeten your insides. After a dip in the deep blue, nothing beats a cooler packed full of frozen fruit. The night before your ocean outing, cut up some fresh pineapple, mango and strawberries, throw them in a zip-lock bag, and stick them in the freezer. The next day, the frozen fruit will double as an ice pack to keep your cooler icy, while chilling your insides and putting a smile on your face.
If you follow my suggestions of What to Bring to the Beach, you will be sure to enjoy your day with sweetness and ease. Have your own beach-accessory suggestions? Tweet @Clichemag and let us know!
Aruba, Jamaica, Bermuda, Bahama – Come on pretty mama, you know how hard you worked for that rockin’ bikini bod. Months of sweating at the gym and sacrificing late night ice cream dates have your tummy and buns ready to slip on that suit with confidence.
With that tropical beach in mind, you’ve stuck to your goal. And if you’re like me, now you’re debating in your head what exactly you’ll allow yourself to eat on vacation.
Do I drink? Do I eat whatever I want?
We all know we have to be careful with the fun things in order to look good doing them.
So, just how do you keep your sexy physique and live it up on your next vacay? 1. Give it a Moment
What is it you really want? Sleep, conversation, a good book? You might be turning to an easy way out to feel comfort, when the cabinet doesn’t hold what you actually need. Before grabbing that snickers bar, think for a moment what would truly satisfy you. Most likely a brisk walk, a dip in the pool, or a sweet kiss from your significant other would do the trick shamelessly. 2. Keep Up the Good Work!
You’re allowed to exercise on vacation! Contrary to popular belief, vacation doesn’t strictly mean sitting by the pool. Many resorts give vacationers access to a gym, provide luxurious swimming pools, and are located in places where walking is encouraged. Take advantage of the new environment – go on a hike, explore town, try scuba diving! And if all else fails, go for a jog with your boo, it’ll get your blood pumping and keep your mind as clear as the Caribbean Ocean. 3. Everything in Moderation
Finally, don’t be too hard on yourself. We tend to feel guilty after indulging, but remember, you are getting away for a reason. You should allow yourself a little wiggle room to enjoy your much needed retreat. If you’re getting drinks at the tiki bar, keep it to one. If you decide to try the dessert, just have a few bites. Some find logging their caloric intake helps avoid overdoing it. If this is you, try installing MyFitnessPal on your phone, and simply jot down whatever you eat. The app calculates your calories and quickly reminds you of your daily limit.
Be sure to take these practical tips with you on your next vacation to ensure your body is as rockin’ on the plane home as it was when you arrived! Tweet us your own “How to Stay Fit on Vacation” advice @clichemag!
