Zap Those Zits for Good: 4 Acne-Busting Tips for the Hopeless

Who wants to know about acne busting tips?  We’ve all been there.  You do your nighttime skin routine. Before you pat on your night cream, you treat yourself to one of your bi-weekly detoxifying clay masks, to give your skin a little extra sheen before you moisturize. Wash it off, put on the cream, dab on some retinol around your eyes, and voila–time for bed.

After sleeping like a baby for an impossibly perfect eight hours, you wake up and plod over to the bathroom, bleary-eyed and half asleep. You flick the light on and glance briefly in the mirror, only to be greeted by dread incarnate…

That’s right. You have a crop of acne on your lower right cheek.

How can it be? You did everything right: you washed your face, detoxified with a face mask, moisturized before bed, and even fought Father Time with some retinol. You rarely go a night without washing your face before bed (unless Prosecco makes an appearance too early in the night) and maintain a pretty good diet.

For those who fight these inexplicable clusters of acne, it might feel like your acne is here to stay no matter what you do. This feeling of angst might compound even more if you’ve already visited a troupe’s worth of dermatologists to see what the problem is. Although we’re no skin doctors, we do have some tried-and-true, all-natural skincare tips that might be worth taking a stab at. After all, it’s better to take action then mope around with a small mountain range on your face.

Before we begin, though, let’s make something clear: your diet has a pretty big say in how your skin looks. Processed, sugary, and fried foods can trigger inflammation, which in turn can trigger acne. If you have sensitive skin or eczema, your chances of breaking out are even higher. Some studies have linked dairy and acne breakouts, too, so hold the cheese if you have a date later.

Now let’s talk about a few homegrown tips that’ll get your skin back in tip-top shape.

Do Your Laundry

Hear us out: no, washing your jeans is not going to give you blemish-free skin. We’re talking about cleaning your sheets, pillowcases, scarves, hats, gloves, or whatever clothes or fabrics that frequently touch your face. Pillowcases are a big one, mainly because they easily collect oil and dirt (don’t get us started on drooling). Of course, the more your skin comes into contact with oily, dirty surfaces, the more likely you’ll be to break out. Get that detergent ready!

Hands Off Your Face

This one goes out to our more anxious readers. Do you find yourself picking at your face when you’re nervous? If so, we would like to suggest that you find a new outlet for your stress. Picking at your face will only further inflame the acne on your face. If you pick too much and make yourself bleed, you could leave some unsightly scars on your face. A good rule of thumb is just to let your face be. Even if you do have a little whitehead that would look better after popping it, it’ll most likely have long-term consequences.

Salicylic Acid Kicks Serious Ac-id

Wearing makeup to fight a breakout might sound counterintuitive, but many products nowadays actually have acne-fighting properties. Many primers and foundations include salicylic acid, an acid that dissolves the cells holding zits together. It also leaves skin feeling smooth and soft, so it’s a dermatological win-win. Household brands like Neutrogena and Clinique make many products with salicylic acid, and they come in a rainbow of shades to suit every skin tone.

Up Your Zinc Intake

Like we mentioned earlier, what you eat will heavily dictate how you look. It makes sense that ingesting more essential vitamins and minerals will contribute to a healthy glow. Of course, no studies have generated incontrovertible proof that zinc is an acne buster, but it does show promising results. When compared to prescription acne medicine in a one-month trial, the two remedies showed comparable results. What makes zinc supplements an even more attractive alternative is that you can purchase it over the counter. You also won’t suffer any strange side effects that come with prescription acne medicine, like dizziness and skin pigmentation.

These are just a few of the many alternatives you can incorporate into your routine. While we can’t guarantee any results, we do believe that these are some solid suggestions for improving your complexion. PSA: Pimple Patches Really Work

Ok, so these seem gimmicky, right? That’s what I thought when I first heard about them. I mean, they’re essentially a Band-Aid that claims it will shrink and/or get rid of a blemish overnight. To me, the claims were too high and I wasn’t buying it. I mean, literally they weren’t getting any of my coins. Then, one day, Emily Ferber of Into the Gloss made my thoughts on pimple patches completely flip. I honestly didn’t even read her article, whoops, but just took a mental note of the title: How Did I Only Just Get Into Pimple Patches?!? However, even with a title that compelling, I still didn’t invest in any acne dots or pimple patches, which I now completely regret.

Recently, I found myself on Into the Gloss again, this time reading their most recent ITG Top Shelf. The woman was gorgeous and the product shots were lust-worthy, typical ITG. One of my favorite sections on the site is the comment section, which is full of beauty junkies giving advice and sharing their thoughts on products, which also somehow never falls short on humor. One of the commenters was raving and backing up the products featured in the article and promised skin an infant would envy if you were to use them, so obviously after reading that, I was all in. I wasted no time checking out the site where she had purchased all of her products: Peach and Lily, which specializes in Korean beauty. Of course, one of the first (award-winning) products that popped up on their welcome page was none other than pimple patches. They were only five dollars, so I felt like it would be crazy not to buy them, especially because the other pimple patches that I had come across started at twenty dollars.

Luckily, when my Acne Spot Dot Patches by Peach Slices came in the mail I had the perfect spattering of spots to test out my latest purchase on. I did my normal skincare routine, then stuck a dot onto my blemishes and went to sleep. When I woke up, WOW! I could actually see the sebum that had been sucked out by the patches and when I peeled the stickers off, my blemishes were almost completely flat and on their way to a full recovery. I was so pleased with my purchase that I immediately Snapchatted all of my friends about it and convinced them to buy some, too. Once I ran out, I felt like I didn’t even know how to function without acne dots in my life. I didn’t feel like waiting for another order to come in, so I went to Ulta and picked up a version by Peter Thomas Roth for thirty dollars, which yes, was an insane amount to pay, but I was desperate. Ultimately, I found that I wasn’t thrilled with the results they gave me and will definitely be purchasing the ones from Peach Slices again instead; they’re worth the wait. Overall, just buy pimple patches, ok. They’ll come through for you even when your skin doesn’t.

5 Acne Solutions to Treat Sensitive Skin

If your acne-prone skin is anything like mine—sensitive—then a variety of over-the-counter treatments (or even prescriptions) can be way too harsh. Dermatologists have recommended face washes, creams, and gels, and I’ve tried them all. But each one led to irritation, and nothing is appealing about skin that’s dry, itchy, and inflamed.

It’s common for solutions to warn against the dangers of sun exposure, further subjecting already-sensitive skin to sunburn and flakiness. Sure, lotions can be used to rehydrate, and foundations and concealers can mask redness and blemishes, but a combination of these products often only lead to more breakouts.

Tired of my skin being anything but flawless after using a plethora of products, I took it upon myself to do a little experimentation of my own. Over the past few years, I came across treatments that not only rapidly reduce and diminish imperfections, but also a few that conceal and eliminate altogether.

Ladies, it’s time you treat your sensitive, acne-prone skin right with these five must-haves.

 1. Murad Rapid Relief Acne Spot Treatment, $22, ulta.com
In June, Murad launched its Rapid Relief Acne Spot Treatment that uses maximum strength salicylic acid to reduce blemish size in as little as four hours. Thyme and pine extracts maintain skin’s natural balance, and horse chestnut and oat extracts reduce redness while soothing skin. Just dab a little of this clear, fast-acting gel on problem areas and say goodbye to breakouts and irritation.

Top Five Face Masks

Not one of us out here has the same skin type and problems, what works to treat my skin problems might not work to treat yours. Some of us might have dry skin, some of us might have oily skin, and some of us might have a combination of both. So, how do you know what skin product out there is right for you?  Well, it is pretty hard trying to find the right product for your skin, especially when there are so many choices. There are two ways to figure it out: trial and error, and research. Luckily for you, I did all the research, and narrowed it down to five facial masks you can choose from. I hope this makes it a little less painful for you to choose the right facial product that best suits you.
glamglowGlamglow Super Mud:
I don’t know about you, but I love seeing my face masks work right from the moment I apply it to my face, and with Glamglow Super Mud, I can do just that. After application, the Super Mud dries and soaks up impurities from the skin, mostly oils and dirt. You can see it working in action for yourself, there will be spots that dry darker on your face then the rest, those are spots where a large amount of impurities are being lifted away from your skin.
Origins Active Charcoal Mask:
Living in the city can play a big role on the condition of our skin.  With all the pollution and toxins out there, it’d be hard to find a face without a black head on it. But that’s not a problem when you have the right products, one of them being Origins Active Charcoal Mask. Of course, it contains charcoal, which is known for its purifying properties, and this formula will rid your skin of pesky impurities and give you a much more radiant complexion.
Tea Tree Face Mask by The Body Shop:
The Body Shop Tea Tree Face Mask is great for calming redness, this instant cooling mask removes impurities, absorbs oils, and leaves your face deeply cleansed and refreshed.
Cupcake Face Mask by LUSH:
Another one of my favorite products, the Cupcake Face Mask by LUSH is not only great for oily skin, but it smells absolutely wonderful too. If you have oily skin like mine you will love this stuff. The Cupcake mask contains spearmint oil to cool skin, vanilla to calm redness, and Rhassoul mud to deeply cleanse. I’m telling you this is the only treat your skin won’t get enough of.
Glamglow Hydrating Mask:
I cannot help but tell people that this is the best moisturizing mask out there. So here is how it works, you simply apply the formula on to a dry face and have a nap, when you wake up wipe the formula off with a soft dry cloth and boom! You’ll have skin as soft as a baby’s bottom, it is as easy as that.

Green Fall Trends

Hi, readers! I hope all of you have had extraordinary summers involving beaches, beaches, and more beaches. Where did the summer go?! I feel Memorial Day was just yesterday and we were getting our barbeques up and running for a cookout. Time truly flies when you’re having a lot of fun. Nevertheless, who said fall and fall style couldn’t be fun? Fall becomes fun when pumpkin spice latte makes its return to its rightful place on the coffee throne. It becomes fun when the leaves begin to change and you hear the crunching of leaves under your feet. It also becomes fun when jungle green becomes a primary player in the fall palette. I love jungle green primary because it is so versatile and mixes so well with browns, blacks, plum purples, which are many colors that designers are incorporating in the fall color scheme this season. Kermit the Frog once sang that it wasn’t easy being green. To that I reply: how can it not be when it’s so central in a fashionista’s way of dressing for autumn? Jungle green, to me, is a strong and tough color that can definitely hold its own weight. Give green fall trends a try this season!

Have you heard the latest buzz about GLAMGLOW® mud masks? Talk of these masks has been swarming my social profiles for weeks straight, so I decided to test these babies out to see if they were actually worth all this hype. I was able to get my hands on both the THIRSTYMUD™ hydrating treatment and the SUPERMUD™ clearing treatment,  and all I have to say is that these masks are a must-have in your daily routine of facial cleansing. These revolutionary masks will have your face looking and feeling more radiant within 20 minutes.

If your face is in dire need of hydration, then the THIRSTYMUD™ treatment can solve most, if not all, of your problems. THIRSTYMUD™ contains a blend of hydro replenishing ingredients for both short- and long-term effects. After just one use, I could see and feel the difference in my face. As I wiped off some of the mask, I noticed that my face already felt smoother, and I loved it. I have not found any other product that has worked that quickly. Also the great plus about THIRSTYMUD™ is that it can be used on all skin types for both men and women. All you have to do is apply it two to three times a week for about 20 minutes, wipe off the excessive product, massage the remains into your skin and just like that you are on your way to healthy, radiant skin.

Pores, and scarring, and acne. Oh my. These are just a few problems that SUPERMUD™ helps to fight against. It also helps prevent fine lines, wrinkles, bacteria and breakouts, and it promotes clearer skin, collagen, and improves our skin’s overall texture. Right when I applied the mask, I felt a cool tingling feeling. This was most likely caused by the peppermint plant used in the ingredients. As I watched the mask dry I could see the oil being absorbed by the mask. What I absolutely love about this treatment is how I actually saw my pores shrink after one use. I always had a problem with my pores being large, but when I say this works wonders it really does. SUPERMUD™ is also applied two to three times a week for 20 minutes and then completely wash it off, leaving you with great looking skin.

Do you want to join the rest of us GLAMGLOW® addicts? GLAMGLOW® masks are available at Sephora and on glamglowmud.com. If you’re a little doubtful about buying the product, there are also samples you can buy. This is a great investment and will fit perfectly in your medicine cabinet!
