Summer Skin Care

by

So you’re on your way to the shore with a couple of your closest friends and while you’re trying to shove your orange and yellow beach chair into a truck that was about to burst three beach bags ago, you remember that you have forgotten to buy sun block. So, what do you do? Well, you get into the car and rush over to the nearest Rite Aid and head down the summer aisle to find yourself overwhelmed by more than thirty different brands of sunblock. With so many options you reach for the closest one, hoping you made the right choice. But at the end of the day, you and your friends come back home  with a not so hot burn. This could have all been avoided if you did your homework, but who has time for homework? Oh, that’s where I come in, I’ve already done the research for you and I have came up with a list of seven super saving sunblocks.

Aveeno® Protect + Hydrate®: This is great, especially if you have already had sunburn. Sunburns can do a lot of damage to your skin and it can leave your skin feeling dehydrated and leathery, but Aveeno® Protect+Hydrate® contains oatmeal, which is a natural soothing moisturizer. So not only does this sunscreen protect you against UVAs and UVBs but it also soothes and moisturizes your skin in the process.

Coppertone® Clearly Sheer™: I know what you’re thinking, my great grandmother used Coppertone® when she was a kid, this can’t be any good for me now. Well, Coppertone® has come out with a new look and formula. Coppertone® Clearly Sheer™ is guaranteed to leave skin feeling softer, won’t cause breakouts, it’s fast absorbing and to top it all off it is water resistant.

L’oreal® Paris Advance Suncare Quick Dry®: Awesome. Who likes feeling sticky afterwards? No one! L’oreal® Paris

Advance Suncare Quick Dry® is non-greasy, non-sticky, oil-free and alcohol-free; sounds like the best stuff out there. All you have to do is spray it on and it is instantly absorbed. Love it.

Banana Boat® Sport CoolZone™: Instantly cools skin during application, Thank god for menthol! If your skin is already feeling the heat just spray Banana Boat® Sport CoolZone™ on for an instant relief. This sunblock can be found both in a lotion and sheer spray plus it is water resistant, just make sure to apply every 80 minutes.
Kiss My Face® Face Factor®:
Wow! Kiss My Face® Face Factor® for face and neck is formulated with green tea, licorice and cucumber extracts. It also contains a lot of good other stuff to help fight against the appearance of wrinkles, to hydrate and soothe and lastly to decrease skin’s sensitivity to the sun. That’s not a big deal, wait until you hear that this lotion contains little tiny capsules of oil that release over time to provide the ultimate hydration.
Neutrogena® Clear Face Liquid Lotion: If your face is very sensitive and susceptible to breakouts then Neutrogena® Clear Face Liquid Lotion is what you would want to be picking up at your local drugstore. This lotion is weightless, leaving skin with ample room to breath and it won’t leave your skin feeling oily because it has a water-light texture.

Neutrogena® Pure & Free™: This is for all the makeup lovers out there. Neutrogena® Pure & Free™ is a fragrance-free lightweight formula. It is great for applying everyday under makeup and it will not leave your face feeling or looking cakey while it protects you against those harsh sun rays.

The Guide to Beating Dry Skin

by

It happens every year: as soon as December arrives, we start seeing the effects that winter has on our skin. Luckily, there are lots of products just for dry skin, but where do we start looking? Which moisturizers work the best, and which ones will satisfy our needs? Well, first, we should buy moisturizers designated for certain problem areas, and some of these moisturizers work at relieving itchy skin. Below are some tips to help you combat winter’s frigid side effects. BY JASMINE MOUSTAFA

Face

Moisturizers are not created equal. We cannot just put any moisturizer on our faces because some of them can give us acne or clog up our pores. The first thing to do is to find a moisturizer that is face friendly and will not cause more problems than it is actually solving. One of my favorites that I would suggest to everyone is Aveeno’s Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer. It does not contain any oils, and it has been dermatologist-tested, meaning it will not clog pores.

Lips

Chapped lips are not a pretty sight, and they are pretty painful. The best lip balm I have ever come across is Blistex’s Lip Medex. It works on severely chapped lips and it contains menthol, which gives your lips that tingly cool feeling.

Hands

We use our hands for everything, and because of this, they suffer the most throughout winter. If you want to keep your hands soft and hydrated during the winter, than Euccerin’s Intensive Repair Hand Cream is what you are looking for! What I like about this one is that you do not have to keep applying over and over; one application can last hours.

Body

I have gone through so many body lotions trying to figure out which works the best, and I found one that I just love. It is Gold Bond’s Ultimate Healing Concentrated Skin Therapy cream. It heals and prevents dry skin. I also like that it is fragrance free, so it will not clash with the perfume I’m wearing that day!

Feet

Our feet also take a beating every day and the winter does not make it any better. If not treated correctly, severely cracked feet can be very painful. Your best bet is to prevent it or treat it immediately. I like using Burt’s Bees’ Coconut Foot Crème. It smells very good and the coconut oil keeps your feet hydrated!

Mani-Pedi Musts

by

4733601645_0037326b60_zThere’s nothing like a fresh mani-pedi to provide feelings of refinement and rejuvenation. However, week after week of attention can lead to a lack of green in wallets with an excess of cobwebs in its place. So, why not bring the salon home and give yourself endless mani-pedis for a fraction of the cost? These tools and tips will have friends asking you, “Where did you get your nails done?” immediately.

Rough around the edges
Start with clean nails by removing all nail polish. Even if you don’t have any on, give your nail beds a quick swipe to remove any hidden polish or dirt. Then, exfoliate hands and feet with your favorite scrub or better yet, cane sugar. Most store-bought scrubs are sugar or salt scrubs. Make your own with a cup of sugar, some water, fresh lime and orange juice. This will smooth out hands, leaving them softer than ever.

Make them Melt
Cuticle oils and removers are essential for salon-look nails, but Formula10’s Pink Creamy Cuticle Remover is the most effective. The accordion shaped bottle makes application easy. Squeeze the bottle and run the long nozzle along nail beds. Allow to sit for one minute.

Nit Picky
Once your cuticles have absorbed some remover, use the flat end of a cuticle removing tool to push cuticles back. This will cause dead cuticles and skin to fold and the tweezer-prong shaped side of the tool can be used to pick away the melted cuticles. This will result in clean, moisturized and most importantly, healthy looking nail beds that are ready to be moisturized.

Silky Smooth
After all of that preparation, what seems to be simple would be applying lotion. It really is as easy as that, but the wrong lotion could have consequences for skin. Overly fragrant products are often only so, while body butters or creams can leave skin oily and greasy instead of saturated. Any of Aveeno’s lotions can conquer this issue, but the Aveeno Skin Relief 24hr Moisturizing Lotion targets dry skin and moisturizes it back to health.

Nail Beds of Steel
Salon quality nails must be durable and resistant to cracks or breaks. That’s why Sally Hansen’s VitaSurge Growth Gel is the best start to growing strong nails. Apply a small, spreadable amount of the gel onto each nail and then rub it in with fingers or applicator. The beads inside the formula infuse vitamins A, C and E into nails to promote growth. This is essential for nails that undergo lots of painting.

Growing and Growing
Before airbrushing tiny daisies, stenciling a French tip or simply applying a solid color, apply a base coat to nails. Essie’s Grow Stronger will strengthen nails while providing primer for the coats to come.

Final Don’t Touch
After all is said and done and each finger and toe is perfectly painted, the final piece to the puzzle is topcoat. Recently, matte coats have become a trend, but for on-the-go nails with high gloss, Nails Inc. London’s Kensington Caviar Top Coat does the trick. This top coat dries to the touch in 45 seconds, but fully dries in ten minutes and creates a slick, gel-effect—the perfect touch for salon-quality nails.

There’s some hard work behind a fresh mani-pedi, but with the right tools and enough practice, anyone can create salon quality nails.

End of Summer: Healthy Hair

by

The beach is the perfect day long escape in the summer. The sun warming your bronzer-glossed skin, sand between your toes, and wind blowing in your hair is the perfect combination for a perfect day with a book in your lap with icy drink in hand. In fact, the sound of that is enough to relieve tension and ease the mind, right? Think again! The combination of sun, wind, and sand takes a huge toll on hair that goes unnoticed until weeks after serious damage is done. This combination dries out hair, and without proper care, split ends and a flaky scalp is the result. These simple steps will be sure to give you healthy hair!

Consuming alcohol dehydrates the body. So, if you’re having a margarita or shandy on the beach, make sure to drink lots of water to rehydrate your skin. After all, to help your hair, it’s best to start inside out. In addition to keeping hydrated, don’t forget to apply sunscreen on your scalp! This is often forgotten about, but your scalp is just as exposed to the sun as the rest of your body. If a burn occurs, brushing will be difficult and there’s a great chance that your scalp will peel in patches … gross! Try a facial sunblock like Aveeno. These are great for sensitive skin and don’t paint your entire head white.

After a day of sun, relax a bit when you return home. Pour yourself a glass of water with some lemon slices or veg out and have a snack. Whatever you do, be sure to drizzle some olive oil evenly on your scalp prior to. Let this soak into your scalp and roots for at least fifteen minutes, and then rinse it off with the leftover sand and sea salt you trailed home from the beach.

Leave in conditioner is super easy to use, but can go a long way. Simply spritz a bit into hair and finger comb or fully brush from root to end. This will moisturize your hair (until it gets wet) and leave it perfectly hydrated.

Hot Oil

This slightly differs from olive oil, but if all else fails, pick up a hot oil treatment from any drugstore and follow the directions on the tube. For the most part, all you’ll need to do is allow the tube to heat up in boiling water for a few minutes and apply to hair. The effects should be noticeable post shower.

Summer only comes once a year, but the damage it causes to your hair can last for an extended time. With these tips, your hair will stand against the natural forces summer brings and be healthier for much longer.
