Kikiito is releasing the CONNECT Collection, a new fashion couture bag line with focuses on sustainability and functionality. It is to debut on February 19 at London Fashion Week.

The CONNECT collection was designed and created by Kiki Ito from her experience throughout the pandemic. Channeling her struggle with depression and anxiety, she drew inspiration through introspection and reflection to help discover and flesh out the authenticity of her brand.
“The mind is such a powerful thing it can control you in the worst ways but it can also take you to the best places. I wanted to express all the honest emotions I had from my fear to the strength I found through this collection” says Kiki.
Sustainability is the main focus of the collection with their usage of leftover leather for every intricate detail of the bag. Each is designed for longevity for long-lasting use and only a limited supply will be manufactured to minimize waste.

When designers Tiffany Wu and Lynn Lu created HEIRLOOM, they had a trendy world traveler in mind. Combining fashion with function, HEIRLOOM was born and has garnered great acclaim since its inception. Here, we chat with Tiffany Wu about the inspiration behind their latest collection and how their lifestyle is reflected in their work.
Cliché: You started HEIRLOOM Bags because you could never find the perfect bag for your traveling lifestyle. Is it safe to say you design your bags with your own personal style in mind? Tiffany Wu: We definitely design our bags with a personal touch. We believe that putting yourself as the user when designing is extremely important because functionality plays such an importance in our daily lives and we want our customers to feel connected to our products and make them feel comfortable. For example, we add a hidden card slot at the bottom of our bags for key cards or subway cards, allowing women to swipe through effortlessly, saving time and staying organized. Our passport holders have slim card slots and multiple currency holders, designed for the world traveler. HEIRLOOM is something that is close to the heart, and a woman’s handbag holds her everyday necessities and knows her the best. We design not only for fashion and style but having functional details embedded within the bag are our core values. We believe in beauty on the inside and out.
You created a capsule collection for laptop bags back in 2014 for Apple. What was that experience like? Would you consider creating another laptop bag collection in the future? We were honored to work with such an innovative company like Apple and work closely with their retail/product team. They believed in our quality and attention to detail, offering products for women that have a demanding lifestyle. The capsule collection was an extension of our main line, created to hold the 13” MacBook with a designated iPad slot and earphone pouch, but can convert into an oversized clutch for a night out. Unlike most “tech” bags, our collection was chic and modern and can be used for other function. How has your heritage and lifestyle played a role in your company message and your designs? As parachute kids and work, we did our fair share of international traveling. This inspired us to design for women like us with demanding work schedules and busy lives without sacrificing on aesthetic. HEIRLOOM’s designs are vogue, enduring, versatile, and fun. We design for modern, independent women like ourselves that seek quality and design without sacrificing on practicality.
Your Twin collection received the 2016 10th Annual Independent Handbag Design Award for Best Overall Design & Style. What inspired this collection and why do you think it resonated with so many people? This collection was actually the first line ever created for our brand. Not only is it named Twin collection for the fact that Lynn is a younger twin, but it also encompasses the core essence of our brand: functional designs that are also unique, sophisticated, and well-crafted. The collection was a product of our blended lives after spending many years living in both U.S and Asia. Our Asian culture influenced our designing of a more proper and structured bag, while our American influence reminded us of the “practical spirit” that every bag must also have. We’ve included in most of our bags functional features such as a dog-clip leather strap for keys, multiple interior slip/zip pockets, and a designated metro card pocket for easy-swipe access. The end product is not only a bag with purpose but also a bag that you can delicately hold as an evening top handle or wear as a cool, chic crossbody bag during the day. I think that’s why people love the bag; it can be your go-to bag for so many different occasions.
Your Spring/Summer 2018 collection is called “Memphis Movement.” What inspired this collection? The Memphis Movement was an impactful design movement in the ‘80s, a generation where we grew up in, drawing inspiration from art deco and pop art. We used a lot of geometric shapes and pops of color, moving away from the minimalism and monotone color palette, which we have incorporated into our SS18 collection with the use of leather layering, exaggerated mirrored hardware, and geometric shapes. We wanted our products to be visually impactful and fresh, and to stand out from what exists in the market.

Which bag from the Spring/Summer 2018 collection is your favorite and why? I love our Memphis Shoulder bag from SS18. It’s really HEIRLOOM’s take on the classic flap shoulder bag. We’ve made it a bit “cooler” with wider side gussets, a wide handle strap with nice buckle detailing, and a generous hardware piece in the middle for a bit of pop. We loved it so much, we designed several versions of the bag, with our signature emboss, mixed trim leathers, and (our favorite) the Spiked version.
Which other collection of yours would you recommend for new buyers? In addition to our signature Twin collection, we would highly recommend the Veronica collection. It’s a classic flap bag with unconventional detailing. Inspired by a jewelry designer friend, we incorporated exotic and luxurious materials on the bag, mixing delicate python with durable cowhide with front zipper detailing and quilting that is feminine and wearable. On the interior, multiple compartments and zipper pockets were designed to keep personal items well organized and divided; a design detail is rarely used in classic flap bags. We added double chain straps that not only can be converted into three different looks but also gives movement and flow when carried.
You also sell a range of accessories on your site, including sunglasses, key charms, and pouches. How does the design process for these accessories differ from the design process of your handbag collections, if at all? When it comes to designing our accessory line, we need to be much more focused and really hone in on what our key design elements are for each season, whether it was color combinations, special trims/leathers, or emboss patterns, and make it work on something much smaller and compact than a regular bag. For example, the size of our signature emboss pattern had to be reworked a few times to make sure it was something that looked good on both handbags and small leather goods. But one thing we always keep in mind when we design anything for our line is that it has to be both functional and fashionable.
What are you working on next? We are working on our Fall/Winter 2018 collection now. It’s still a work in progress, but we are getting really excited about it. You’ll not only see a slight evolution in our signature Twin collection but also some exciting new shapes and some beautiful, rich colorways for the fall season as well.

Every designer has a story, and Parisa Wang is no exception. Growing up in China, Wang was not encouraged to pursue an art or fashion career of her own. Despite this, Wang chose to chase her dreams and recently launched a successful Kickstarter campaign featuring handbags with a story of their own. We love her designs and her “Love Affair” concept behind her handbags. Read on for an exclusive look behind Parisa NYC!
Cliché: Have you always been interested in fashion? If not, what is the point in your life that really attracted you to this industry and lifestyle? Parisa Wang: I have loved drawing, designing, and fashion since I was a kid. I never knew that I could be a designer, though. Artistic expression was not a warmly accepted ideal during my childhood because the arts were seen as a waste of time and as an impediment to my academic success in China. I didn’t openly pursue art until I attended college in the U.S. However, I always find opportunities to immerse myself in drawing, designing, and creating things growing up. I drafted and created graphic boards and newsletters for schools I attended from fifth grade to high school. While I was getting an Accounting bachelor’s from Miami University, I double majored in Painting to enhance my drawing skills.
Steve Jobs said, “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.” My desire to become a fashion designer never faded entering college and pursing a business degree. Instead, it grew even stronger and deeper.
I could have followed my parents’ insistence and a traditional career path. However, at the end of the day, I could not help but feel empty and lost. I asked myself: is this the path that would make me happy? Will I wake up every morning excited to go to work? Will my work have any lasting value in the world? I imagined what I would tell my grandchildren one day when they asked about my life. I could tell them that I chose a safe and responsible career choice for me at the time, but I would much rather tell them that when I was young, I decided to take a risk to follow my dream and have never looked back since.
What do you think are the biggest trends to pick up on for Fall 2016? I think the biggest trends in the handbag category for Fall 2016 are structured handbags with top-handle detail and mini handbags. The structured look continues to be a popular option if you are looking for more polished and formal handbags. The different variations we have been seeing on the streets and runways are more refined in silhouette, mostly in squared shapes. Adding accented top handle detail like the Stage I – Hooked Lady Bag in the Love Affair collection gives the traditional look a new evolution.
Alice in Wonderland-inspired mini accessories is also very on trend this season. We see many designers scaling down classic handbag shapes and introducing the styles in various color options. In the Love Affair collection, the Stage II – Addicted Cross body bag is shaped like a love potion bottle and can be worn as a wrist wallet or as a cross body bag. The bliss of having free hands is that you can hold his all day long.
Who inspired you most as you started your career in the fashion industry? I was really inspired by Elizabeth Gilbert and her philosophy of living a creative life.
First and foremost, “You don’t need anyone’s permission to live a creative life.”
Secondly, creativity wants to be made and it wants to be made through you. I humbly accept my creativity’s invitation to create and I work hard to turn the idea into reality.
Last but not least, “Onward ever, backward never.” We are what we repeatedly do. I don’t believe in overnight success; at least I don’t think I would be that lucky person.
What are your future plans, specifically in the fashion industry? Any ideas yet on what your next collection will be? After a successful Kickstarter campaign, I plan to focus on reaching out to more consumers. Our customers are the bulk of our business and I value their feedback and opinions the most. I don’t believe in making handbags for mere functionality sake. I make them so that women around the world can hold and showcase a tangible object of strength and beauty.
I plan to work with market fairs, trunk shows, and charity events to spread the story of Love Affair and its message. Inspired by strong women everywhere, I was compelled to continue telling their stories via the Love Affair collection. Future collections will be closely related to our foremost theme: love.
How did you come up with the five stages of love in your Love Affair Handbag Collection? Disappointed in a love affair, I found consolation and empowerment among my group of friends. Overwhelmed by their graciousness and the emotional support I received from these amazing women, I was compelled to spread an equally encouraging and supportive message of hope to others.
The story of a love affair weaves into the design process of the Love Affair line. The idea came so naturally to me because it was a reflection of my own relationship.
What is your favorite handbag you have ever designed? I love the Stage V – Freed Satchel in the Love Affair collection. The design inspiration comes from Lucio Fontana’s spatial painting. The inventive heart-shaped detail comes from a knife mark on the leather. Similar to the idea of turning a breakup wound into a beautiful piece of art that touches people’s heart, I was fascinated to see a broken knife mark turning into an ingenious heart.
What is your favorite material to work with? I like all natural materials, such as leather, woven fabric, and silk. Love Affair handbags are all handmade with genuine leather that ages beautifully. Like a great love, it takes time, effort, and a good care to develop. It will be well worth the wait.
When creating the line, did you have your own personal style in mind, or did you create handbags for a certain type of person? My girls are the four ladies in Sex and the City:
Samantha is ‘Freed.’ She loves him, but she loves herself more. “Oh please, there’s always a competition with an ex; it’s called who will die miserable.”
Charlotte is ‘Hooked.’ She is eager for love and to be loved. “Everything happens for a reason, even if you don’t know what it is yet.”
Carrie’s attitude to love is ‘Boundless.’ “I’m someone who is looking for love. Real love. Ridiculous, inconvenient, consuming, can’t-live-without-each-other love.”
Remember Miranda meeting Steve ‘Halfway’ on Brooklyn bridge? “Relationships are not about playing games. They’re about mature and honest communication.”

Cliché: What was the inspiration for this season’s collection? Lauren Cecchi: The inspiration for the Fall/Winter 2016 collection was definitely inspired by camouflage and the everglades. I travel frequently to Florida to my family’s vacation home and whenever I fly, I always get a window seat so I can stare out the window in awe. I have many pictures from over the years and it only gets more beautiful. Obviously I see a lot of greenery with sand coasts and black waters. I wanted to incorporate these colors into my collection because sand and army green are the new neutral and can blend with any outfit.
What is your favorite piece? My favorite piece has to be the newest style, The Double. It is two bags in one so you can wear it as a shoulder bag or clutch depending on your mood. I love creating new bags to see what my customers gravitate to and I think this bag will be a favorite this fall!
Do you have a muse for your collection, or model it after a specific type of client? I always create new handbags with my customers in mind since they are the ones wearing them! When I am in the design phases, I think, “Where is my customer going? What is she/he doing? What do they want/need in a handbag?” By asking myself these questions, I can dream up what I think they need as their newest addition to their wardrobe. My customers love to travel just as much as I do, so I think that is a major “muse” for my designs: what they will need wherever they go in the world!
If you could define the mood of your brand in five words, what would it be? Classically chic and effortlessly fun.
What is the best part about the design process for you? Besides drawing new designs, I love going to my leather supplier and making new colors and seeing what he has in stock that is new and fun. There are so many textures of leather I didn’t even know existed, like pebbled, perforated, distressed, woven, painted, raw, acid washed, and even bullet holes! I love seeing what they have, then creating my own colors based off my inspiration by what I see and think people will want to wear.
What role does this collection play within the fashion world today? The role I am trying to play in the fashion industry today is you don’t need to travel to Europe to experience luxury. I manufacture all of my handbags in the heart of New York City and believe my quality is top notch. I inspect every stitch, every corner, and every pocket to make sure it is the quality my customers deserve. I also believe my role in the industry is to show you can have a luxurious bag that is versatile. I know people who won’t bring out their nice bags unless it is a nice occasion. I want my customers to wear their bags every day and feel luxurious doing it.
Who do you hope will buy handbags? I hope that everyone will own one of my handbags one day. I would love to walk down 6th Avenue and see a flock of women sporting them. Of course I would love to see celebrities and even Kate Middleton wearing a piece from my collection, but I think seeing someone in the raw wearing one of my bags would be delightful. This is something that they purchased, chose to wear, and believed that handbag was an extension of themselves. What more can I want?
