The Unknown Truth About Oils
The idea of putting oil on your face may seemed a tad strange, but it’s the latest beauty craze that’s sweeping the nation. These oils can be used to moisturize any part of the body, but they are mainly made for the face. Many women fear that oils will cause breakouts or make their face greasy, but none of that will happen as long as you select the right type of oil for your face. Oils can also help conquer a lot of facial problems, such as signs of aging, dark spots, and uneven skin tone.
Not only are these oils great for your face, they can also work wonders for your hair! Oil can be used as a hair treatment to help with split ends and damaged hair. You can also use oils to tame flyaways or help with static.
The best part of these oils is that one exists for every skin type. If your skin is oily, then the best facial oil for you would be Josie Maran’s 100% Argan Oil Light. This oil is ultra light and will not lead to breakouts. If you have combination skin that is also dull, then Tarte Pure Maracuja Oil is your best bet. This oil contains Vitamin C that will help to brighten skin and leave it glowing. Lastly, if your skin is dry and you require a lot of moisture, then the best product for you would be Fresh Seaberry Moisturizing Face Oil. This oil helps keep skin moisturized all day long. All of these oils are available at your local Sephora store.

I remember the day I gave up eye shadow like it was yesterday. I was up before sunrise, wasting precious hours of sleep sitting in front of a mirror, attempting to cover my eyelids with a thin film of beige, sparkley dust. Frustrated with the tedious task, I finally decided it wasn’t worth the hassle. I threw down the brushes, three to be exact, and walked out the door without the sparkles. Sparing 20 minutes to create a look that would fade in a few hours and leave a trail of glitter down my cheek just didn’t make any sense.
There did come a point in time, when dull, shadow-less eyelids did start to bother me, but that time was short lived. You see, just when I was about to return to the routine I’d dropped, I was introduced to eye cream shadows. Growing in popularity, these products have a smooth gel consistency and can be applied in a matter of seconds with a brush or simply the tip of your finger. Apply as much or as little as you like and even blend multiple shades to make a statement that will resonate from dawn to dusk. With cream shadows, you’ll never have to worry about running glitter, using specialized brushes, or wasting time. Your biggest decision will be choosing the right shade to slide over your lid!
Don’t waste another second on eye shadows. Find a gel or cream that’s right for you, like one from Maybelline’s Color Tattoo Metal 24 Hour Cream Gel Shadow, for fierce eyes that will have everyone thinking took you all day to create. I assure you once you try cream, you’ll never dream of anything else. Pretty soon you’ll be screaming for eye cream too!
It’s about time we squash the most common summer skin myths. While it might be our favorite season of the year, the harsh effects of summer sun on your delicate skin are real, so it’s important that you don’t let a silly misconception jeopardize the health of your most precious organ. We’ve come up with some of the most well-known summer skin myths, and made it our mission to get to the bottom of these sneaky, not to mention dangerous, misunderstandings. This summer, there’s no excuse for a nasty burn or a stale skincare regimen leftover from the frigid winter months. Read on for the top six summer skin myths: DEBUNKED!
“I’m dark-skinned, I don’t need to worry about sunburn or skin cancer.”
WRONG. This is a very common skin misconception that gets a lot of people in trouble. Yes, fair-skinned people are more susceptible to getting bad burns that can lead to skin cancer; but that doesn’t mean people with dark or olive skin aren’t at risk. While fair-skinned people burn faster, people with darker skin are less likely to burn as quickly and, therefore, sometimes aren’t as likely to protect themselves or notice the damage being done. It’s important for people of all skin types to lather up with SPF and visit their dermatologist on a yearly basis to check for any unusual moles or growths. “The sun works wonders for my acne.”
Although it might seem like the sun can improve your blemish battles, it usually doesn’t do much except aggravate your existing problems. Initially, it might appear as though your acne is improving when you have a nice base tan or slight sunburn, but the color is only temporarily camouflaging your existing acne. In actuality, soaking up the sun can lead to buildup of dry skin, which is proven to cause blemishes. Wearing heavy makeup in the heat can also seriously clog your pores, leading to even bigger problems. Your best bet? Keep makeup light in the summer, always use a non-comedogenic, oil-free sunscreen, and MOISTURIZE every chance you get.
“If I have on makeup, I don’t need to worry about using sunscreen.”
Wouldn’t that be nice? Unfortunately, makeup doesn’t offer a shield from the harmful rays of the sun, unless it has built-in SPF. Luckily, many face makeups, including powder and liquid foundations, offer not only seamless coverage, but also solid sun protection with SPF. Many daily moisturizers also contain SPF, if you’re not worried about blemishes and want to keep things light and fresh on a steamy, summer day. “My skin is naturally oily in the summer, so I don’t need to stress about moisturizing morning and night.”
This is another common misconception during the summer months. While it might seem like your skin is producing more oil than ever (HELLO, grease!), the opposite is usually occurring. The sun naturally sucks the moisture out of your skin, which leads to the buildup of dry, dead skin cells. The fix? Use an exfoliating face wash (gently) once a day or every other day, and always follow up cleansing with an oil-free moisturizer to keep skin silky smooth and sufficiently hydrated.
“There’s no need to reapply waterproof sunscreen after swimming or sweating.”
We know, it says “waterproof,” but that doesn’t mean you don’t ever need to reapply. In fact, it’s probably safe to say that these sunscreens are more water-resistant, and not totally waterproof. There’s no doubt they hold up better than you’re average sunscreen, but not much can withstand a sweaty, 45-minute run outside or a long swim in the rough currents of the ocean. That’s why it’s crucial to always reapply after sweating or taking a dip in the pool. Taking the time to do so will ensure the type of SPF protection your skin is craving, no matter what rigorous (or not so rigorous) activities you plan on doing.
“It’s okay to have the same exact skin regimen from season to season.”
We are creatures of habit; therefore it’s not surprising that most of us feel married to our daily skin routines. But just as skin differs from one person to the next, our individual skin needs also change from one season to the other. When the temperature and humidity rises, our skin craves lightweight, oil-free, and moisturizing products that won’t clog pores with dirt and sun-dried dead skin. Of course, there’s no need to make drastic changes in your routine, especially if a product is working well for you. But it’s important to be aware and stay in tune with your skin’s changing needs, whether you need some extra SPF or a powerful boost of quenching moisture.
Lately, everyone has been talking about BB Creams. Some have even been calling it a “miracle in a tube.” In response to this increasing demand, both high-end cosmetic lines and drugstore skincare brands have recently released a slew of BB Creams, all claiming to minimize your beauty routine and maximize skincare benefits. In essence, BB creams, short for “beauty balms,” are meant to take care of all of your essential skincare needs in the convenience of one product. BB creams are formulated to not only moisturize, but also protect your skin from harmful UV/UVB rays, as well as decrease the appearance of blemishes and improve uneven skin tone. In many ways, BB creams function similarly to tinted moisturizers with SPF, which we know have been around for a while. What sets BB creams apart from your average tinted moisturizer is the addition of anti-aging components such as Vitamin A, C, and E, along with silicon based ingredients that have the same smoothing effects of a primer.
Is this newest skin sensation the “wonder cream” some claim it to be? The jury is still out. Being the beauty devotee I am, I of course had to try it out for myself. Since this was only a trial, I opted for a more price-friendly option and picked up Olay’s Fresh Effects BB Cream from my local drugstore for a meager $14.99. I have to admit, I was skeptical from the start. It probably doesn’t help that I am a bit of brand “brat,” and usually select pricier, high-end beauty products that pack a powerful punch (and leave a hole in my wallet). After giving the product a try, I wasn’t wholly impressed, neither entirely disappointed. Although it did improve some uneven skin tone and blotchiness, it didn’t do much in terms of hiding my blemishes. Honestly, it didn’t conceal them at all. That being said, the scent of the cream was indeed “refreshing” as the product promises, and it was also much lighter than most tinted moisturizers that I’ve tried. I ended up using foundation and concealer over top of the BB Cream, which I guess defeats the purpose entirely, but I was happy with the final product. It definitely delivers in terms of moisturizing and priming your skin.
The final verdict? I’m not about to clear my bathroom counter of all my other beloved beauty products, but the BB cream is a nice addition. Since the coverage is minimal, this product is probably best for people who are blessed with few or no blemishes (obviously not me) or those looking for light but dependable coverage in the steamy summer months. I’m tempted to try a high-end version of the BB cream, but I’m thinking I’ll probably get similar results. Have you recently tried a BB cream? What’s your opinion on the most recent skin sensation? Comment below! We’d love to hear from you!
Let us all breathe in a collective sigh of relief. The harsh months of winter are over, along with an unusually frigid spring for those of us who are lucky enough to reside in the great white North East. With this welcome change in seasons comes a change in style, as well as a dramatic overhaul of your daily beauty routine. For many, this equates to a simpler, lower-maintenance beauty regimen. It’s summer and you’re constantly on the go: swanky soirees next to the pool, glam boat parties, and Sunday brunch with the girls (oh, and work too). There is way too much fabulousness going on in the summer to be messing around with cakey makeup and goopy hair straightening serums in 100% humidity. It sounds tempting, but we would prefer a more au natural approach for the steamy summer months. Below are six summer beauty must-haves, or as we like to call them, “beauty non-negotiables.” These essentials are sure to keep you looking, feeling, and smelling fresh all the way through Labor Day weekend.
The first step to a fresh-faced look and feel for summer is getting rid of all the dead skin winter left behind. Prepping for bathing suit season means eliminating that flaky, scale-like skin and revealing your inner ready-to-be-sun-kissed goddess. Exfoliating on a weekly basis doesn’t only prep your skin to finally see the light of day. It also helps banish breakouts and prevent those pesky ingrown hairs.
We recommend a product from the world-renowned European Wax Center. Their product, The Exfoliate, is the epitome of a heavy-duty exfoliator, yet it’s gentle enough to be used anywhere on your skin. A small dollop of this miracle cream, which boasts EWC’s trademark “comfort blend” of antioxidants and aloe vera, ensures an enzymatic action that brings all of that flaky dry skin to the surface to reveal your smoothest skin ever. You can purchase The Exfoliate at any EWC location near you for $38.00. It’s definitely a beauty splurge, but trust us, it’s more than worth it.
Tinted SPF Moisturizer
Ladies, it’s time to nix your cakey foundations and powders for good, or at least until next winter. After all, there’s nothing worse than feeling your makeup run down the side of your face as you chat up your summer crush in the scorching heat. We strongly suggest trading in your favorite maximum coverage foundation for a tinted SPF moisturizer. Why? Tinted moisturizers are fabulous for two reasons: they offer seamless coverage, while at the same time protecting your skin from the harsh summer rays. (anti-aging, anyone?). In short: minimal coverage and maximum protection.
The options are endless when it comes to tinted moisturizers. If you’re looking to splurge, we recommend Sarah McNamara’s Miracle Skin Transformer. This antioxidant-rich formula boasts a hydrating base, as well as a powerful SPF 20 protection that literally transforms your skin in the blink of an eye. You can purchase the Miracle Skin Transformer for $48.00 on the Sarah McNamara website (http://shop.miracleskintransformer.com/). Pinching pennies to afford your summer share? No worries. Most budget-friendly make up lines offer tinted moisturizers in an array of shades that are perfect for your low-maintenance beauty regimen.
A fresh, fruity scent
A fresh scent that matches your flirty mood is the perfect way to seal your summer look. Many well-known fragrance brands feature summer-inspired scents, so finding one shouldn’t be a problem. Your mission is to sift and sample your way through the endless array of options and find a summer fragrance that is perfect for you. Keep in mind, your scent should mimic the season. You want something light and fresh, with a touch of fruitiness. Our favorite is Ralph Lauren’s Romance Summer Blossom. It’s perfectly fruity and divinely floral, with romantic hints of vanilla and coconut. You can purchase Romance Summer Blossom in high-end department stores for $74.00.
Jamie O’Neill, founder of Skull Sugar Cosmetics, has worked behind the scenes at Fashion Week and for numerous photo shoots. She is an award winning makeup artists and salon owner. After years of working with cosmetics, Jamie created Skull Sugar in order to give makeup that is both beautiful and functional.
Recently, Cliché sat down with Jamie to discuss how she found her passion for cosmetics, why she started Skull Sugar, and how her product is different from the rest.
CLICHÉ:Did you look up to anyone or find inspiration in anyone growing up?
Jamie O’Neill: I have always been obsessed with two women growing up, Marilyn Monroe and Bettie Paige. Marilyn had this soft side to her, a classic and innocent beauty. She had so many inspirational quotes that I have used in the courage to build my business. Bettie was stunning, exotic and was a reflection of the hard edge beauty that I love to this day.
CLICHÉ: What made you want to start your own business?
JO: I started my cosmetics line because I have shifted my thinking on the products I use. I wanted to use talc and paraben free cosmetics that were not tested on animals. As an artist, it was difficult to find highly pigmented products that meet those standards. Skull Sugar was born out of a need I personally had in the makeup artistry field.
CLICHÉ: What is the difference between high-quality mineral cosmetics and other types of cosmetics? Also, how important was it for you to have a cruelty free product?
JO: To me, a high quality product is something that is made from better raw ingredients. In general, high quality cosmetics use better quality base ingredients, which cause the products to glide more smoothly, last longer, crease or crack less often, and be gentler on skin. They can also be custom formulated to treat acne, and other skin issues. High quality cosmetics also provide a richer pigment and require little to no touch up’s through the day.
CLICHÉ: Name a few celebrities that have used your products.
JO: I am very much honored to have had our products used by celebrity makeup artist Melissa Walsh, who used them at the 2013 Oscars! They have also been used on international supermodel and author Sarah DeAnna for her latest magazine cover, Terri Seymour for the Vanity Fair Party, and Nadja Swarovski!
CLICHÉ: What has been the most popular product thus far?
JO: Our most popular product is our Eye Shadow Primer and the Cloak & Dagger eye pigment. The primer makes the eye pigments pop, turns them waterproof, and lasts all day! Our Loose Mineral Foundation is a close second since it can be used as a liquid, a concealer and a powder all in one.
