5 Tips for Preserving Hair Color

Whether you spend a lot of money at a salon or use drugstore box dye, we all want our locks to look fresh and vibrant for as long as possible. Here are 5 tips for preserving hair color.

1. Don’t Wash Everyday

It may seem obvious, but water and shampoo are the two main components that make your hair dye fade down the drain. Deep cleansing and anti dandruff shampoos tend to be the main culprits, and should be avoided if you want your color to last. Many experts recommend that washing your hair only once a week is optimal. Although avoiding washing may be more difficult for people with naturally oilier hair, dry shampoo is always your best friend. It’s also important to remember to wait at least 24 hours after dyeing your hair to wash it.

2. Use a Color Protectant or Color Deposit Shampoo and Conditioner

Color protectant shampoos work by being gentler, with protective ingredients that coat the hair and prevent color from escaping the follicle. Amika Vault Color-Lock comes with UV filters and antioxidants that make sure your color stays popping. Color deposit shampoos work how they sound, by depositing the pigment directly back into your hair. This is especially useful for blondes who want to avoid looking brassy. OverTone Haircare comes with a color deposit line with options for a wide range of shades.

3. Use Cold Water

Hot water opens up the hair follicles more than cold water, and allows for more color bleeding, while cold water keeps the follicles tight and closed. This is especially essential for redheads, whose color fades the fastest. Although it may seem unpleasant, it’s worth it in the long run.

4. Limit Your Sun Exposure

The more time you spend in the sun, the quicker your hair color will fade. This is because the UV rays break down the chemicals bonds within the dye. If being in the sun for extended periods of time is unavoidable, make sure to cover your hair with a large hat or umbrella. Surprisingly, there are also SPF products that can be applied to the hair and scalp, such as the Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil.

5. Avoid Heat Styling

The hotter the temperature, the quicker the color will fade. If you’re married to your blow dryer, curling iron, or straightener and can’t seem to part with them, make sure to use the lowest heat setting possible and utilize a heat protectant spray that will coat the particles and help prevent the color from escaping.  The Pureology Color Fanatic Multi-Tasking Leave in Spray is optimal for colored hair.

Achieve Smooth Hair With Kaleidoscope Hair Products

Kaleidoscope Hair Products is a company that caters to different hair textures. Their products are great for relaxed, damaged, natural or color treated hair. I had the opportunity to try their Moisture Silk Shampoo and Moisture Silk Conditioner for myself to see just what benefits they could provide to my hair.

The Moisture Silk Shampoo contains a rich lather and it can be used as many times as you want. It is designed to nourish your hair without being too heavy, add moisture into dry and fragile hair, and hydrate your hair. What’s great about this product are the ingredients, which include Aloe Vera, Glycerin and Vitamin E. These ingredients work great for any hair texture because they provide intense moisture and strengthen your hair to retain length.

The Moisture Silk Conditioner contains shea butter which is perfect for my 4C textured hair. Not only is shea butter great for your skin, but it softens your hair and prevents breakage. A conditioner is a great way to detangle your hair because it provides slip and you are able to comb through each strand without causing damage.

When using this shampoo and conditioner, I noticed that my hair was very soft and my curls were very defined. I also noticed that my hair was moisturized afterwards, which is great because my hair needs additional moisture due to my texture. I’m excited to use this product on my next wash day and I recommend this to anyone with dry hair.

Hair Saving Products

Weak, dull, and flat oh my! These are three words us girls don’t ever want to imagine being associated with our locks. Having our hair breaking off and looking lifeless is something we try our best to avoid, but it is really hard with all the beauty trends out there. My mom always said, “It hurts to look pretty,” and our locks are screaming for help. How can you blame them with all the dyeing, chemicals, straightening, and curling our hair gets put through on a weekly basis? So, in order to help our locks, I did some searching and found five hair products that will help bring back some life into our damaged hair.
Macadamia Deep Repair Masque
The Macadamia Deep Repair Masque provides deep nourishment to each strand of hair and rebuilds hair for improved health, shine, and elasticity. Macadamia works great on all hair textures, and it is recommended to use this product two to three times per week for ten minutes ($36).
Silk Bloom Restorative Treatment Masque
Get your hair’s natural glow back with Silk Bloom by Shu Uemura. It contains Argan oil, which is known for its reparative and regenerative properties. Silk Bloom repairs hair fibers, leaving you with bouncy hair that feels amazing from root to end ($68).
Hydra Synergy Shampoo and Conditioner
Hydra Synergy contains a micro marine compound of sea kelp, aloe vera, babassu oil, and green tea that leaves hair with superb hydration and luminous shine. It works by replenishing lost lipids where needed while helping protect cuticles from future damage ($30/each).
Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle
For hair divas on a budget, Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle will run you around $3 a bottle; not bad at all, for a 3 minute hair makeover. This deep conditioning treatment will give you super shielded locks that look luscious and are stronger than ever.
Pantene Expert Advanced Keratin Repair Conditioner
This is another product that both your hair and wallet will love. It repairs damaged hair in as little as two minutes, and this triple-nourishing formula will restore your hair to a smooth, healthy condition ($4).

TRESemmé’s new hair collections

Just when we thought we couldn’t love TRESemmé more than we already do, the professional, affordable brand released two new collections for optimum hair care: the Renewal Hair & Scalp line (complete with shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner spray, and a scalp nourishing conditioning mask) and the 7 Day Keratin Smooth line (complete with shampoo, conditioner, and heat-activated treatment). Several washes and styles later, we have a full report about these new salon-gorgeous products.
renewandscalpFirst, the Renewal Hair & Scalp line. Designed specifically to promote healthier hair, this formula works right at the source of your hair’s foundation: your scalp. Active ingredients such as ginseng, tea tree oil, and sunflower seed oil target surface signs of damage and work to moisturize the scalp while leaving your hair soft and manageable. After shampooing and conditioning, top off your look with a few spritzes of the lightweight leave-in conditioner spray. Our recommendation? Apply the deep conditioning mask once a week (or more frequently, if you need the rescue) for extra softness and strength.
TR_7DKS RangeIs smooth, frizz-free hair what you crave? Then the 7 Day Keratin Smooth line is just right for you! Designed to work best with the heat from a flat iron using revolutionary Thermal Technology, the line promotes smoothness and humidity resistance without the damaging effects of permanent chemical treatments. The best part of all this? This lower-sulfate formula delivers long-lasting effects and maintains hair’s smoothness for up to seven days (or three washes). Start by first washing and conditioning hair, then separating wet hair into 3-6 sections (depending on how short, long, or thick your hair is). Then rub two pumps of the heat-activated treatment in your hands before distributing and combing through each section. Next, blow dry hair completely and activate the Thermal Technology with a flat iron over each section. Styled as desired.
Fashion and beauty bloggers everywhere have taken the 7 Day Keratin Smooth challenge, just like Amber Fillerup Clark of Barefoot Blonde (pictured above). To join in on the fun and to see more looks, search the #Glam7DaySmooth tag on Instagram!
Now it’s your turn to renew and protect with TRESemmé! All products are available at food, drug, and mass market stores nationwide, or you can browse tresemme.com for styles tips, tutorials, and news.

Briogeo: Luxury for Your Locks

When I was first approached to try the Briogeo hair care line, I was a little skeptical. I’ve been using the same hair products for over five years, and I am resistant to change. Still, I’ll admit my curiosity was piqued when I saw Briogeo’s simple, but chic packaging and admirable product specs. Unlike other hair care lines (including the one that I previously favored), Briogeo boasts a concoction of 95% natural and naturally derived ingredients—plants, fruit extracts, vitamins, antioxidants, healthy oils and other premium ingredients. Who knew nature could be so fancy, right? The line’s founder wanted to utilize ingredients found in our very own earth to bring out our hair’s natural liveliness and beauty. As you can probably gather, I ended up falling head over heels for the brand, not only for what it stands for but for what it did for my crazy mane!

bri2082_0039 After using Briogeo consistently for two weeks, I’m noticing one major difference: manageability. I have long hair that is often difficult to comb through—particularly when wet. After a couple of days of using the Be Gentle, Be Kind cleansing shampoo (MSRP $19)  and following with the Blossom & Bloom volumizing conditioner (MSRP $23), I’ve been able to detangle my hair much more easily and with a lot less breakage than I am used to. This means that the bathroom gets hogged for a much shorter period of time since my arms get a break from the struggle of tugging. Both the shampoo and conditioner are rich with beautiful flowery scents that lingered in my hair long after I washed. My usually thin, dry locks felt fuller and softer, and even my fly-aways seemed more tamed!bri2082_0061

Twice in my routine, I replaced the volumizing conditioner with the Don’t Despair, Repair deep conditioning mask (MSRP $26). I can only describe this little gem as hair magic. While there are definitely similar masks available that help strengthen weak hair, they are all nearly double the cost. With a blend of rosehip, avocado and argan oils, this sweet-smelling formula truly did wonders for my dry hair. I used the treatment for the longer recommended time of ten minutes in order to get a deeper and fuller nourishment. After blow-drying my hair, it still retained its softness, and even looked healthier with an added shine.

So, what’s the verdict? I give the Briogeo hair care line a ten out of ten. It’s exceptional  formulas produce real results. With no parabens, silicones or phthalates, the products are absolutely natural and healthy. As the brand states, “The name Briogeo [bree-oh-jhee-oh] encompasses the soul mission of our brand: to create hair that is vibrant and full of life through the earth’s very own ingredients.” Hats off to you Briogeo; mission accomplished!

End of Summer: Healthy Hair

The beach is the perfect day long escape in the summer. The sun warming your bronzer-glossed skin, sand between your toes, and wind blowing in your hair is the perfect combination for a perfect day with a book in your lap with icy drink in hand. In fact, the sound of that is enough to relieve tension and ease the mind, right? Think again! The combination of sun, wind, and sand takes a huge toll on hair that goes unnoticed until weeks after serious damage is done. This combination dries out hair, and without proper care, split ends and a flaky scalp is the result. These simple steps will be sure to give you healthy hair!

Consuming alcohol dehydrates the body. So, if you’re having a margarita or shandy on the beach, make sure to drink lots of water to rehydrate your skin. After all, to help your hair, it’s best to start inside out. In addition to keeping hydrated, don’t forget to apply sunscreen on your scalp! This is often forgotten about, but your scalp is just as exposed to the sun as the rest of your body. If a burn occurs, brushing will be difficult and there’s a great chance that your scalp will peel in patches … gross! Try a facial sunblock like Aveeno. These are great for sensitive skin and don’t paint your entire head white.

After a day of sun, relax a bit when you return home. Pour yourself a glass of water with some lemon slices or veg out and have a snack. Whatever you do, be sure to drizzle some olive oil evenly on your scalp prior to. Let this soak into your scalp and roots for at least fifteen minutes, and then rinse it off with the leftover sand and sea salt you trailed home from the beach.

Leave in conditioner is super easy to use, but can go a long way. Simply spritz a bit into hair and finger comb or fully brush from root to end. This will moisturize your hair (until it gets wet) and leave it perfectly hydrated.
Hot Oil
Screen Shot 2013-07-22 at 10.38.49 PM
This slightly differs from olive oil, but if all else fails, pick up a hot oil treatment from any drugstore and follow the directions on the tube. For the most part, all you’ll need to do is allow the tube to heat up in boiling water for a few minutes and apply to hair. The effects should be noticeable post shower.
Summer only comes once a year, but the damage it causes to your hair can last for an extended time. With these tips, your hair will stand against the natural forces summer brings and be healthier for much longer.

Bigger is Better

Screen Shot 2013-05-12 at 10.26.14 PM
With the release of their new volumizing products, Bumble and Bumble’s campaign for “Big is Back” is quite an understatement. If the shelves at Sephora aren’t packed with the line, then chances are, it’s ridden with cobwebs, because once again, Bumble and Bumble has proven to be one of the leading hair product distributors in the industry.
Screen Shot 2013-05-12 at 10.26.14 PM
Their thickening shampoo ($24.00) and conditioner ($25.00) are the perfect start to a sexy hair day. Only a dime-sized amount of each product should be used (even for longer or thicker hair) with shampoo on roots and conditioner on the ends. Both shampoo and conditioner will not leave hair feeling slick or oily after the rinse, and best of all, it does not weigh hair down. In fact, the post blow dry effect alone speaks for itself. Your hair strands will actually feel thicker and you will immediately notice a difference in texture and volume after the first use.
The shampoo and conditioner can be used in collaboration with any hairstyle, but for the highest-volume look, try loose waves, bouncy curls, or a natural, tousled look.
