Basic Clothing Staples for Every Wardrobe

Changing your style can be a fun way to experiment with fashion and signal a growth in your personal life. But, if you’re anything like I am, you’ll want to change your personal style every few months. That and keeping up with the newest trends can do a number to your bank account. Owning these basic clothing staples will allow you to change your style as you desire without needing to buy a completely new wardrobe. These items will never go out of style and will keep you up to date with the ever-changing fashion trends!

Quality Denim

Jeans are the single most versatile article of clothing. So, I suggest investing in a high-quality pair of jeans. Durable jeans can last years if not a lifetime. There’s a good reason Levi’s have been around for over 167 years. Levi’s are trusted to be comfortable and fit your desired look. They are constantly making new styles, but my favorites are always the vintage finds.

Leather Pants

No surprise here! Per our previous article, leather never goes out of style!  If handled with care and delicacy, leather pants can also last a lifetime. The hefty price tag may be a deterrent, but vegan leather is becoming more widely produced. Still, nothing beats scoring the perfect leather pants from a second-hand store.

White and Black Tank Tops

Tank tops are basic, but basics are important for an ever-changing wardrobe! The tops linked below are made with stretchy and chic fabric that can be worn professionally with a cardigan or worn casually on their own.

Little Black Dress

A classic staple with a long and infamous history. Originally designed by fashion icon Coco Chanel, the LBD can do it all – professional, casual, and chic.

Black Boots

If I were a minimalist, I would say black boots are the only pair of shoes needed in a wardrobe. Boots have the extra benefit that they can be worn all year round. If you pick up the right pair, they can be durable, comfortable, and versatile. Whether you prefer a higher heel, chunky platform, or flats, black boots are quite possibly the only shoe you need!

Hoop Earrings

Gold or silver, hoop earrings can complete any look making you look and feel put together.

Fashion Styles to Avoid on Your Next Date

There is a reason that fashions come and go. We think something looks nice and then we come to our collective senses the next year.  That’s why anyone that is going out on a date needs to be aware of several fashion styles to avoid. After all, you want to look as complete and well put-together as you can for the sake of a first impression.  Stuffing these fashions away is your first step to a great date.

Pluck the Floral Patters

bakaribsm / Pixabay

One of the most prominent patterns that have emerged in recent years is floral. You see flowers on everything from leggings to shirts, but it’s time for them to go away. Flowers have been overplayed, so it was not too common to see them pop up even in children’s fashion. The bottom line is that there is less of an emphasis on patterns and more on the right color scheme and fabrics.

Get Baggy Clothes out of Here

If you lived through the late 90s, then you know that baggy clothes are beginning to creep back into some people’s fashion. Don’t let it happen. There is a difference between cute oversized clothes on women and shirts and pants that are too large for you to walk around in comfortably. With that in mind, it’s a great idea for you to put aside the baggy clothes in favor of something that just fits well or is tailored if you’re a man.

Sneakers Are for Yard Work

nay_mayhem / Pixabay

Last year, a lot of people have met dates on this site, put together a decent outfit, and then went on a date. The problem was that they paired their beautiful sundress with a pair of “dad shoes” that were blocky, ugly, and clashed with their outfit. While everyone loves the opportunity to be comfortable, there is not a more fashion-less way to be comfortable than by purposely wearing ugly shoes. Put these back in the shoe rack for yard work and get them out of your dating lineup.

Denim Had its Day

As we’ve said, the 90s are trying their best to come back, and another one of the ways that this is the case can be seen in the simple fact that denim is everywhere now. Jackets, pants, shirts, and more make us remember the family pictures with all denim or the famous Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake incident. Go look long and hard at those pictures if you need a reminder why those outfits need to stay away.

Luxury Fanny Packs Should Go

Gucci fanny packs and are a definite no no and is definitely on the list of fashion styles to avoid. These were cool as a fashion symbol for only a little bit and now they are cumbersome and useless. If you’re a guy, stick to a wallet. If you’re a lady, a high band pursue would be a much better option for you to use in this case. Either way, it’s way past time for you to put the fanny packs away.

As you can see, there are some definite fashion styles to avoid when you are out on your date. Most notably, it’s time for you to stuff away the floral patterns, baggy clothes, sneakers as formal wear, denim, and fanny packs so that you can move into a new fashion. The 90s are trying to make a comeback, but you will have to keep in mind that not all fashions were that great in the first place.

4 Denim Trends Making a Comeback

With the cold weather dying down from absolutely freezing to a tolerable breeze, the Cliché fashion forecasters predict a denim whirlwind this spring. So grab your umbrellas, rain boots and all things denim to be prepared for one of the best comeback trends this season.

No matter how many times we try to change our style, the most reliable outfit choice for any occasion is all-jean-everything. From shorts and cropped jeans to jackets, chokers, purses and more, the denim trend is fiercely dependable and here to stay.

Whether you’re relaxing, grabbing coffee or going out on the town with friends, here are all of the must-have denim trends we see coming back in this season’s forecast.

Denim Jacket

Learn To Love Denim Jacket ($61.95, showpo.com)

This spring, denim jackets are coming back full swing. Providing effortless style, warmth and flare, this 90s grunge staple has taken a more modern twist. Transform any outfit from simple to date-night-out with this edgy addition. Wear your jacket open or button it up depending on the look you’re going for.

The Learn To Love jacket from Showpo is transeasonal and a great start to your 2018 denim collection. Whether you’re in a flowy sundress, ripped shorts or cropped jeans, this stylish piece will have you learning to love yourself and your style!

Denim Choker

Denim Skinny Choker Set ($7.90, forever21.com)

In the past year, chokers have made a serious comeback on every trend radar across the globe. While the bold trend seems to be settling down again, one aspect of the choker is only just making its fierce debut. Denim chokers are the new subtlety that provides a unique twist on the classic necklace. Perfect for any outfit pairing, the choker will give you that small touch of denim every outfit in 2018 needs.

Feel free to get creative and make your own denim choker or leave it to the experts and buy one from Forever 21. The Denim Skinny Choker Set features a skinny denim choker and a black faux suede choker with a lobster clasp close. For such a low price, this set is definitely a must-have on our accessories list.

Denim Long-Sleeve

1969 Denim Western Shirt ($59.95, gap.com)

One of our favorite pieces from the denim comeback trend this season is the long-sleeved denim shirt. Versatile for every occasion, this long lined shirt can be worn unbuttoned with an under shirt, buttoned up with leggings for a more relaxed look, or tucked into jeans or a skirt for a more flirty take.

The 1969 Denim Western Shirt from Gap has a very neutral shade for all your pairing needs along with snap cuffs, a point collar and snap-flap patch pockets on the front. Dress this shirt up with white jeans and nude heels for brunch and drinks.

Denim Mini Skirt

Pop and Lock White Denim Mini Skirt ($49, lulus.com)

Putting a twist on the always reliable jean shorts, the denim mini skirt is a movement we are 100 percent behind. Once popular in the 90s and early 2000s, the new denim skirt features a more polished look with highwaisted bands, longer hemlines, and dramatic buttons. Switch up the colors of your skirts from the classic jean-blue to white, black and even maroon. Match with crop tops or a tucked-in flowy shirt and either boots or sandals to make a statement this season.

If you’re looking for a great design and style of mini skirt, consider starting with Lulu’s Pop and Lock White Denim Mini Skirt. With trendy belt loops, pockets, a frayed hem and bold branded button, their skirt exemplifies the all-jean-everything trend.

There are so many combinations with denim that make it a perfect and dependable fabric. And while there will be plenty of new trends breaking out throughout 2018, we think the denim forecast is here to stay. Get your fill of denim and let us know which styles are your favorite!

Plus Size Fashion Trends you Can´t Afford to Miss

Over the past couple of years, women’s plus size fashion has changed drastically. It is great to see more designers are responding to the fact that most women are not a size 6 or 8. They are far curvier.

In fact, right here in the states the average woman is now a size 16.  As a result, more retailers are starting to focus on plus size fashion. Right now, it is a great sector of the market to be following. The emergence of new fabrics and innovative ways to use them is leading to some truly interesting and stylish designs.
Denim on denim
DDenim photoenim is back. The fact that this fabric is good quality makes it is easy to make clothes that keep their shape and hang well. This is great for creating a smoother silhouette.
It is also really easy to build a little extra support into this fabric. Stretch denim can be tailored so that it hugs the figure, and act a little like a very gentle corset. A lot of women love the smoothing effect a pair of high-waisted denim jeans can have on their figure.
The current trend is to wear denim in layers. This look works really well for most women and it is a look that is super easy to personalize.
Rock Tees
If you do not like wearing only denim you can always take the middle ground by adding some rock tees to your wardrobe. These bold designs work particularly well for plus-size women. They pop out at you and look particularly good when worn with a denim skirt or jeans.
Eighties style tops
off-the-shoulder-80s-dressMany of the clothes that are available, right now, are inspired by the eighties. During this era top lengths were long, and the cuts were baggier. This type of cut is a great way to show off your curves, without having to worry about the bulges showing. It is a cut that is very flattering, great fun to wear and extremely versatile. This style of top looks just as good when worn with a suit as it does with a pair of jeans.
Tropical Prints
Big bold prints tend to overwhelm and swamp small women, but they look fantastic on those women who wear plus-size fashion. This year, it is tropical prints that are the most popular. These bold, zany designs are a great way to add interest and have a bit of fun.
They are particularly nice for a holiday or party, but can just as easily be worn in everyday settings. The trick is to pair them with something plain. For example, a tropical print blouse would look fantastic with a pair of cream pants or a dark skirt.
Working out what works for you
If the above has inspired you to hit the shops this weekend take the time to read this article first. It explains how to correctly identify your body type and which cuts are most likely to work best for you. Using this information will enable you to quickly select the clothes that are most likely to look great on you. Saving you time and the frustration of having to put everything back and start again.

Denim Pieces Perfect For Fall

Happy fall, my favorite dolls! I don’t know about you, but I’m glad the summer heat is a thing of the past. It was one of the hottest summers we’ve had; therefore, I’m welcoming my favorite season with the biggest open arms. Everything from the weather and colorful leaves to the clothes and festive events is my favorite during the fall.
I’ve always incorporated a lot of denim into my wardrobe, especially on chilly days. It may not always feel like it, but denim garments always appear effortlessly comfortable, regardless of being fitted or not. Denim jackets remind me of the awesome ‘90s and I love how simple they are to style and layer. I remember one of my first denim jackets was from Abercrombie & Fitch. I shockingly still have it and have added a few silver studs to the pockets and back to make it my own. Everyone needs a classic denim jacket, so try rolling up the sleeves and adding some retro pins to customize your look. I love the twist of denim on the standard parka by MOTO. The dark denim is a fun game changer and I love how cozy it looks and feels. Complete with a hoodie and tons of pockets, this grungy parka is a must.
For the past few years, I’ve been digging the stretchy jeans from Express. They always fit well and have tons of different styles and fits. I don’t know how people wear stiff jeans on a daily basis—it’s so uncomfortable; I can barely stand the feeling while I’m wearing them for a few seconds in the fitting room.
The denim skirt from Urban Outfitters is such a steal for $59. The mini denim number can be worn year-round, even in the winter with a pair of black opaque tights. With the A-line silhouette and button closures, this flattering skirt looks cute with a crewneck sweater. Get your denim on and enjoy the beauty of fall!

These Trends Are Making A Comeback

Early 2000s trends have finally come full circle; we’ve fallen in love with them, cringed at the sight of them, and love them all over again! Fall 2016 runways were filled with jean skirts, shearling, and exposed lace and lingerie in perfect 2000s fashion. Designers modernized these trends by changing the silhouette and styling them for a new look. Denim skirts are largely made in A-line cuts and exposed lace is styled in a much more subtle and feminine way.
Celebrities like Selena Gomez and Hailey Baldwin have turned the jean skirt from a thing of the past to a chic wardrobe staple. Pair a jean skirt with over-the-knee boots in cooler months this fall or a strappy gladiator sandal as you transition out of the warmer summer months. The A-line cut of this new wave of jean skirts make them a trendier version of their 2000s counterparts. The A-line cut looks great with a crop top for a night out and can even be dressed down with a graphic tee for a more casual look. However you wear it, the denim skirt is a classic and versatile piece that belongs in every wardrobe.

Another throwback style taking the runways by storm is shearling. Burberry models sported exaggerated shearling trim on bomber jackets in the Fall/Winter 2016 runway shows. Shearling appeared on several other designer runways for the coming season, each designed with a different style. Chloé took an entirely new approach to this comeback trend with a shearling and leather pullover, a look that is sure to extend to the masses in no time. Upgrade old sweatshirts to a shearling outer layer for a luxe and comfortable look.

Exposed lace and lingerie are rising from the ashes of the Britney/Christina era classier than ever. For Love and Lemons offers high-quality bralettes and lace pieces that perfectly embody the romantic clothing style. A lace bralette works under virtually any garment, particularly shirts with a low neckline or exposed back for a taste of femininity with exposed lace.  For Love and Lemons also features dainty lingerie-inspired dresses that look best paired with a classic pump for a night out or ankle booties and a jacket for a daytime look. This season in particular, opt for black lace pieces inspired by Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, and Valentino for a darker, more gothic look. Whether you’re sporting a lace dress, denim skirt, or shearling pullover, make your 2002-self proud this fall with these comeback trends.

Trend Alert: Denim for Spring

“Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking.”

We’re pretty sure every person who watched The Devil Wears Prada knows this line by heart. I say this line almost every single time spring comes around the corner because not only is it hilarious, but it’s true. Flowers and spring: how original. But it’s 2016, people. Time for a new trend to hop onto. We’re talking about denim!
Am I the only one to think of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake when I hear the words denim and fashion in one sentence? I shouldn’t be the only one. They made fashion history. But anyway, I’m here to tell you that denim is back in our lives, ladies and gents — now more than ever! I’m not just talking about denim jeans. Wear denim everywhere loud and proud. Your shirt? Your shoes? Your dress? You name it, it’s in.
Funny thing is, I just looked in my closet and I found a brand new denim dress and romper (note: they still have their tags on it)… It’s not hard to pull off the denim trend. It’s all about finding the right items. That’s what we’re here for. Here are some looks to add to your closet!

The Best Spring Layers

Oh springtime, a reminder that winter is on its way out and summer is on its way in. Even though we’ve been having some warm days ranging in the 60s-70s, a jacket is still very much needed. If you’re like me and leave for work at about 7am, it’s usually a bit chilly outside. By the time I’m out of the subway and heading into the office, it’s about 10-15 degrees warmer, and around 6pm it gets a bit cooler again. Therefore, I definitely need the extra, but light, layer during my commute. Here are some of the best spring layers you need in your wardrobe!

Two staples in every closet are a leather jacket and a denim jacket. They match with pretty much anything and are both edgy and classic. You can never ever go wrong with a leather jacket; it’s sexy and badass. Made from lambskin, the Rawley Leather Biker Jacket by All Saints includes metal details and a waist belt. The denim jacket from Asos has the 1990’s “chill” look, but is very much practical. I love the option of rolling up the sleeves and even adding a pin or two to the pockets to make it unique and fun. I’m also a fan of wearing a denim jacket with a pair of jeans. I feel the same way about denim jackets as I do with leather jackets–you can never go wrong!
We can definitely expect some rain during this season, which is where the hooded parka from H&M comes in handy. Featuring a side zipper and adjustable sleeves, the light parka will keep you dry and is ideal for the commuter. A kimono is also a spring must-have; you can layer it over a dress and booties for a cozy look. The whimsical floral kimono from Zara features side slits and is a fine choice for a festival. Along with the hooded parka, these two garments are lightweight and can easily be folded into a purse or bag if the day is extra warm.

The Evolution of the Turtleneck

From jean jackets to blazers and statement necklaces to well, just about anything—layering your turtleneck is the perfect fall staple. They made their debut into my closet (also my heart) and on almost every single NYFW runway this fall, where Alexander Wang taught us that turtlenecks are in and bare necks are out. Here’s my take on 3 different outfits in the same turtleneck—afternoon, evening and night options. All you have to do is add your choice of accessory and voilà—there you have it: The Evolution of the Turtleneck.

12:00 PM

Afternoons with little effort and lots of coffee (one just ain’t cuttin’ it.) For a simple yet chic look, throw on your favorite jean jacket or in my case denim button up to complete your outfit—easy, peasy. If you want to get fancy, slip on a little pump and tuck in the bottom of your button up.

5:00 PM

Nothing completes a turtleneck more eloquently than a statement necklace. Still waiting to showcase that beautiful necklace your mother got you for your birthday? Say no more because this evening is your chance to accessorize. Timeless and elegant, prepare to be flattered (maybe even proposed to)—who knows.

Statement Necklace

8:00 PM

It’s peanut butter blazer time AKA dinner time so go ahead and pass the chips, please. A blazer is the perfect go-to for a night out with that special someone (in my case, my mother) or a weekend stroll in the city with your girlfriends.
