Ed Letter: Dec 2017/Jan 2018

When I think back on 2017, I think about sitting in front of the TV on January 20, watching Donald Trump get sworn into office. It was the beginning of something I wasn’t ready for, but it was happening regardless, right in front of my eyes, and there was nothing I could do about it. Although troubling news reports would follow nearly every week for the rest of the year, I tried to remain positive, as there were plenty of other things going on in the world that were wonderful, too. Looking back, 2017 gave me so many things, people, and experiences to be thankful for. While this issue covers so many delightful things, especially the accomplishments of our two influential cover girls, The Magicians’ Summer Bishil and social media superstar/fashion designer Liane V, here are some things that personally made my year special.

The first thing Teel Yes co-founder Rui said to me mere minutes after we were introduced at Biggercode in New York City was “I love your earrings.” They were triangular, navy and gold Jenny Bird Flagstaff earrings and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t receive compliments whenever I wear them. When two passionate jewelry enthusiasts come together, complimenting each other’s choice of accessories is always a great icebreaker.

I don’t know about you, but I have a love/hate relationship with summer. The child in me loves the carefree adventures that only summer brings, but as a fashion and beauty enthusiast, I can’t say it’s my favorite season when it comes to style. I had that in mind while brainstorming content for this issue: what the heck am I supposed to wear when it’s 90 degrees?

When I look back on the last several years here at Cliché as Editor in Chief, I think of emails. There were a lot of them: emails from my writers, emails from potential partners, and emails from countless talent representatives from all across the country. During my first year as Editor in Chief, while I was still attending university, I read them on my bus ride home. I’d reply from my Macbook in the college library. I’d sneak responses in during lectures and at my part time job, careful not to get caught by my professors or my bosses. While it’s quite a change from where I am today (no longer in school but receiving more emails than ever), that eager hustler in me is still the same.

While the saying “diamonds are a girl’s best friend” wasn’t one I’ve always necessarily agreed with (I think chocolate is!), I have a much different attitude towards the phrase after getting my hands on some seriously stylish jewelry. After being a Rocksbox Influencer for the past year, I discovered a whole lot of ear jackets, necklaces, and rings I just couldn’t part with. Now that my time as an #RBItGirl is coming to an end, I’m looking back on my top five favorite styles I received from their savvy stylists over the months. These pieces have quickly become my staples, and I can’t wait to see what other gorgeous pieces these brands create in the future.

As I’m writing this letter two weeks ahead of Launch Day, invites are coming in for Paris Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week. It seems like yesterday that I was attending Fashion Week in the fall, watching All Comes From Nothing’s collection breeze down the runway and Vivre Canvas Couture’s painted blue gowns graze past in nearly slow motion, yet here we are once again. Time certainly flies!

I don’t know what happened, but it seems like a moment ago I was standing backstage at New York Fashion Week in February, and now it is nearly Christmas. While planning this holiday issue, I couldn’t believe how quickly this past year has gone by. I owe that, in part, to a very busy schedule, lots of collaborations, and video games. Yes, video games. Thank you, Nintendo, for keeping me sane during this emotional Election Year.

If you’re following me on Instagram, you’ll know that I’ve been obsessed with accessories for the entirety of 2016. They’re all over my feed: earrings and watches and rings and necklaces, all in different styles and colors. It all started when I partnered with Rocksbox.com as an #RBItGirl last December to style and promote their awesome jewelry subscription service, and I haven’t looked back since. It was one of my New Year’s Resolutions to experiment with more jewelry and accessories, and I’m happy to report that it’s been one of the easiest resolutions I’ve ever kept. Come on—it’s hard to say “no” to a little sparkle!

If you were to ask any woman in your life which garment in her closet was her favorite, she could probably tell you in a heartbeat. We all have one; I wore my favorite navy blouse until the color completely faded and I threw on my favorite pair of jeans until there were holes in unacceptable places. These pieces felt like an extension of myself, and when the time came to finally part ways, I hugged them goodbye like they were old friends. Quietly, I vowed to find another piece I loved as much as them. Now, I think I have.

Cliché turns 7 years old this month, and when I think about how far we’ve come since I’ve been the Editor in Chief, I am so immensely proud. This past year has been our biggest year yet, and I have a feeling our seventh year will be lucky as well! From celebrities on our covers like Grace Gealey from Empire and Sabrina Carpenter from Girl Meets World (see pg. 17 for more), it has been such an honor to work with such talented, beautiful, and inspiring individuals over these past 12 months.

I think it’s safe to say I’ve been looking forward to spring since September, back when I first laid eyes on dozens of gorgeous spring/summer collections and beauty trends at New York Fashion Week. (Remember, for example, those braided crowns and beaded dresses at Hervé Léger’s presentation? Dreamy!) Even after being a fashion editor for the last four years, the wait between collections still feels eternal. Can’t we just get these pieces now? Can’t we skip the snow boots and sweater tights and go right to wedge sandals and bare legs again?

Now that we’re well into the new year, how many of us can say we’ve honestly kept up with our new year’s resolutions so far? I, myself, shied away from my usual “I’m going to eat healthier and exercise more!” dreams and instead, swore to try something much more fun: to experiment more with jewelry. ...
