Actor Akeem Mair Shares His Story

Named after an Eddie Murphy character, actor Akeem Mair shares his story on his journey into the acting world. LA-based Mair has been in many award-winning Indie films and takes on smaller roles in music videos and commercials. The versatile actor works in drama, action, and romance roles and dreams of working alongside his inspiration, Denzel Washington. After gaining attention from an appearance on the Ellen Show, Mair was reinvigorated to one day be nominated for an Oscar and threw himself back into the industry. For now, he celebrates an upcoming project he worked on with his father, and hopes to be a motivation to younger generations seeking to achieve their own dreams.

Cliche: What have been some of your favorite accomplishments as an actor?

Akeem Mair: My most favorite accomplishment had to be when I was on the Ellen Show. The thing about it is I didn’t book it!! It was all by chance! I remember my cell blowing up in David Rountree’s Phase 2 On Camera/On Set class. Texts were popping up like, “you were on The Ellen Show??? Call me ASAP!” The segment is called “Speak The Lyrics.” A show where one of Ellen’s writers walks up to a complete stranger and begins speaking to them in song lyrics.

I literally had no idea I was even being filmed to be on The Ellen Show. I remember walking into a Barnes and Noble in Burbank. I noticed a bunch of film crew standing outside speaking to one another. So I asked them, “What are you guys filming?” But None of them had any information about what was going on which I thought was weird. I walked inside and still to this day I don’t understand why I hadn’t noticed the cameras before. I looked around at some books and then I decided to leave. But 2pac’s “ All Eyes On Me” record stopped me.. That’s when Lauren quietly walks up to me. She started talking and almost threw me completely off.

But in the back of my mind I was hearing Coach Mike telling me to not disagree with anything she says. Just be in the moment, so I hit her with some funny humor right back at her. Next thing I know after she walks away, I get swarmed by those same crew members who claimed they didn’t know anything and now they were asking me to sign a bunch of papers. I guess they finally answered my question.

Then it airs on TV and Ellen Degeneres calling it, “The best episode she’s ever seen!” She put it on her instagram page and boom!!! It generates over 5 million views in one day! Then by the grace of God it lands in my future agent’s feed, Sarah Angeli from Commercial Talent Agency. The Timing was crazy because I had just submitted my headshots and resume to her last week.

So as I walked into her office for my agent meeting, guess what she was watching?? My episode cued up on her computer screen. She was like, “I just saw this yesterday and here you are!” So we talked and then she played it again and we both laughed at it. I’ll never forget that moment in my life.

Your resume shows a variety of roles and accomplishments, what is your favorite genre to work in?

Action, Drama or Romance.  Definitely drama because that’s where most of my chances of winning the Oscar will come from and it’s the hardest to perform. I especially love drama roles because they challenge me and bring out the best in me. But I also love playing the hero like Batman or James Bond, with all of the fighting and shooting guns and winning the love interest’s heart at the end. It’s funny to me because my main thing in movies is I want the lead to fall in love and win the main girl at the end. I hate it when he doesn’t because I feel like he failed after going through so much for her. Sometimes I stopped the movie before the big fall and he loses it all just to savor the good times haha. For me, characters are like a living and breathing being and I aim to relate that to my own life as if I’m actually that person. Each role is real to me so when he feels pain I personally feel it. I love roles that bring that out of me.

Who has inspired you in your acting career?

Denzel Washington and Eddie Murphy. You’ll understand why Eddie Murphy is such a big inspiration to me in the next question but for this question, Denzel Washington. I just love the way he approaches his craft. I mean his confidence, swag, fearlessness, and mental toughness literally screams through the screen. He just has you in awe with a feeling like it’s impossible to act that good. He’s just on a whole different level and I have to get there someday. His role in Training Day as detective Alonzo Harris was just out of this world. He definitely deserves the Oscar he won in 2002. You felt everything about his character from selfishness, greed, carelessness, betrayal, ruthlessness, liar, etc. And yet with all of that going on, you still fell in love with his character. Usually you’re turned off by the bad guys and want to see them lose. But I found myself rooting for him and hoping the best for him. It’s kind of why the last scene was so good, the scene that single handedly earned him the Oscar. When you get the audience to love you no matter what side you are on, you truly won! And that’s the biggest inspiration I can take from Denzel.

You are named after Eddie Murphy’s role in “Coming to America”, do you find inspiration from him as you have developed your own acting career?

Eddie Murphy inspires me everyday to pursue my passions to become a legendary actor like him. Being named after his character it seems my parents knew I was destined to be in the entertainment business. My mom, Queen, told me how she and my dad, James, went out on a Sunday evening to see the hit movie “Coming to America” when it came out in theaters on June 26, 1988. She was about 6 months pregnant with me and my parents were still unsure of what my name would be. After seeing the movie, my mother fell in love with Eddie Murphy’s character Akeem.  She talked it over with my dad and they were both in agreement. She loved how he was this African Prince who’s extremely rich but he didn’t walk around like that. He wanted to find a wife who loved and respected him for who he was and not because of his title or his money. He was humble enough to work at a low paying job  and always had something wise to say to people at the right times. He stood up for what he believed in and was completely generous at heart to everybody. When you watch that movie you find yourself saying, “ I want to be like that guy.” I would watch that movie over and over again for inspiration, learning as much as I could to develop into that kind of person. I am so grateful and honored to be named after Prince Akeem.

Who do you hope to work with on a project next?

I really hope to work with Denzel Washington or Eddie Murphy next! Haha I know it’s a stretch but I want to be able to work with those two legends while there’s still time. It kinda reminds me of that rookie season of Kobe Bryant where he went up against Micheal Jordan when he was still on the bulls. That moment was epic! It’s just crazy to me how God had set them up and now looking back you’re amazed by those two legends going head to head. I want to experience something like that, the same epic moment feeling with Denzel or Eddie. To be on set and be able to pick their brains about acting and how they each prepare for their roles. Their tone of voice or gestures…I want to learn what it takes to be an Oscar winning actor from Denzel and how to play so many multiple characters with different personalities from Eddie. Ultimately, the Oscar and to one day be a legend in this game are the only goals I have my mind set on. It sucks that it took me 5 years to get back into my craft but now that I have a new supreme hunger, I’m gonna let go of the past and do whatever it takes to make that happen.

What impacts do you hope to have during your career?

I hope to inspire the kids throughout my entire career through my movies or commercials. I want my impact to be monumental. I want to be a role model to everyone and I want my movies to motivate, to boost confidence, to build faith, to inspire kids or adults to go after their dreams, to lift people out of dark places in their lives, to strengthen the courage of young people to not let this world push them around, to bring positive energy into a world that is so negative, to change the way people feel about themselves negatively. I want my impact to be global and international. Not just in the U.S but the entire world! When people are trying to find an example of someone who went through adversity and persevere, one of the actors they can think of is Akeem Mair!

What upcoming projects are you most excited for?

I can’t really tell who it’s from because of the NDA contract I signed but it’s exciting because my dad is a part of it. Kind of like that Kobe-Jordan moment I was speaking about earlier, it has that same epic feeling. It was definitely a surprise to me and my father because the project made me call him right there on the spot. I haven’t spoken to my father in a minute so you can almost feel the tension of calling him and hearing his voice. I love this project a lot because it helped me reconnect with my father and it’s something I’ll never forget. Sometimes in life you need something to push you to do some of the important things in life you keep putting off because you expect it to take care of itself. It’s great we got to talk while we still have that opportunity. Whoever is reading this if you’ve got something you’ve been putting off, I suggest you go do it. Nobody knows when their last day on Earth is, I can say it’s a great feeling when you do it.

5 Women That Could Have Hosted the 2019 Oscars

With the 2019 Oscars just a little over a month away, it was announced that the show will go on without a host. Kevin Hart was originally appointed to host this year’s telecast. However, after old tweets from the comedian resurfaced, which were explicitly homophobic in nature, Hart decided to step down from his hosting duties. He explained on Twitter that he “did not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past”. Fellow comedian, Ellen DeGeneres revealed on her show during an interview with Hart about the controversy that she pleaded to the Academy to rehire Hart as host of the award show because she felt that he has “grown and apologized and has apologized again.” Ultimately, however, Hart stuck to his initial decision and not host the show. This prompted the Academy to announce that the show will not have a host, and instead, will feature high profile names to announce and present each category.

If Kevin Hart had gone through with hosting the Oscars, it would have been the fifth year in a row that a man has hosted. The last time a woman was named host was back in 2014 when Ellen DeGeneres was given the honor. In a time when the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements are flourishing in our society, and rightfully so, it is rather peculiar that the Academy did not think to designate a woman as host of the show. Unfortunately, it is not happening this year. However, here is a list of 5 powerful women that could have hosted the 2019 Oscars. Hey, there’s always next year!

Wanda Sykes

Can anybody think of a better apology to the LGBT community than to have another openly gay comedian, Wanda Sykes, host the 2019 Oscars? She’s lovable, funny, and would have brought something different to the Oscars than what we have seen before. Maybe one day, Wanda will have the honor.

Tracee Ellis Ross

Black-ish star, Tracee Ellis Ross has no shortage of hosting experience. This daughter of a musical legend has hosted several music award shows, among others. She is also beloved, hilarious and relatable to so many. She would have been an amazing host!

Maya Rudolph

When you think of Saturday Night Live, you can’t help but think of Maya Rudolph. Also the daughter of a music icon, Rudolph made viewers laugh for seven years on SNL, with her many famous impersonations such as Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand, and Beyonce. Like Ross and Sykes, there is not a bad thing to say about Maya Rudolph. She would have made an excellent host for the 2019 Oscars.

Leslie Jones

Following in the footsteps of Maya Rudolph, Leslie Jones has been a standout on Saturday Night Live since 2014. She is also known for her impersonation of Oprah Winfrey, in addition to Whoopi Goldberg and Omarosa. In 2016, following the release of Ghostbusters, Jones became the target of Twitter users making racially charged attacks. This forced her to leave social media. Not long after, she was targeted again after several private photos were released on her personal website, which had been hacked. After these two unfortunate incidents, she gained an overwhelming amount of support from her Hollywood peers, as well as fans alike. Hosting the 2019 Oscars would have been a big “F U” to her attackers and haters.

Whoopi Goldberg

On the December 11, 2018 episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg seemed to offer her services to host the 2019 Oscars. “I realize I may not be anybody’s first choice. But…” Whoopi has hosted the Oscars four times in the past: 1993, 1995, 1998, and 2001, and she never disappointed! She has the experience, she’s a legend, she’s honest, and she genuinely loves the movies. How about a fifth time, Whoopi?

The 2019 Oscars will air on February 24 on ABC.

Jennifer Hudson Discusses Her Dream Role as Aretha Franklin

Entertainment News alert: Actress and singer Jennifer Hudson discusses her dream role as Aretha Franklin on an episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. At the beginning of 2018, it was announced that Hudson would be starring as Franklin, the unprecedented Queen of Soul. Now Hudson has gone on to say how much the role means to her personally. Hudson spoke about the role to Ellen DeGeneres, admitting, “It’s always been my dream to play Aretha, and it’s actually happening.”

Aretha Franklin Requested Jennifer Hudson Specifically for the Biopic

The film was in negotiations before Aretha Franklin passed on August 16 of pancreatic cancer.  In fact, it was Franklin who had requested Hudson play the role. “It blows my mind. I’ve always looked up to Aretha and to portray her—I cannot even speak about it because it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s a huge task.’” Hudson is undeniably excited for her chance at this dream role. It’s a difficult undertaking, considering that Franklin reigned as a songstress during much of her lifetime. An 18-time Grammy winner, Aretha Franklin inspired the music of many artists throughout her long career. Undoubtedly, the legacy of her music will continue to do so. As for Hudson, she is making her own mark, busy as ever in both music and acting roles. Hudson’s other projects include a movie version of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Cats, as well as serve as a judge on the upcoming season of The Voice.

Finding Dory: After 13 Years, Was it Worth the Wait?

It has been 13 years since the release of Finding Nemo (2003) and Disney Pixar has finally brought us Finding Dory! Written and Directed by Andrew Staton, our favorite fish are back and swimming through yet another ocean adventure, but this time Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), Marlin (Albert Brooks), Nemo (Hayden Rolence), and friends are in a search of Dory’s parents. With the film’s June 17th opening, we have the rundown of 5 things you need to know, expect, and brace yourself for when making your way to see this instant classic.

1. Bring tissues… seriously
This is specifically for you ’90s babies. If you saw Finding Nemo when it first released, you have built an emotional bond to this story and to have waited 13 years for the sequel, prepare for the film to tug at your heartstrings within the first 5 minutes. Don’t worry, there will be tears of joy and moments of uncontrollable laughter, but nonetheless there will be tears as the film sheds light on the importance of friendship, family, and believing in oneself.
2. It is an emotional rollercoaster
Just when you think things are great, they’re not. Just when you think things have made a turn for the worst, they haven’t. You’ll find yourself talking to the screen and wanting things to hurry along and get to the happy ending, but once again you’re slapped with another obstacle. Brace yourselves. You’ll either be on the edge of your seat in anticipation or sinking in your chair fighting back anxiety–there is no in-between.
3. There will be a lot of “O-M-G” moments
The seamless intertwining of Finding Nemo into Finding Dory will evoke feelings of nostalgia and answer so many questions that you didn’t even know you had. Finding Dory transports you into the past and gives you an in depth look into Dory’s life, both past and present, as she searches for her parents and where she came from.
4. You’ll have an urge to want to speak whale
Trust me, you will. You’ll learn of how Dory developed this unique “skill” and it’ll be almost impossible not to imitate it.
5. It’s worth the wait (hint: stay after the ending credits)
Although we’ve waited 13 years for this sequel to come to fruition, it was well worth the wait. Staton did not miss a beat from the creation of a new and exciting storyline, to staying true to the character personalities and tying in the past with the present. Finding Dory is easily going to be one of the top animated films to ever be released and enjoyed by those both young and old.
Bonus: Sigourney Weaver
That is all.

And the Oscar Goes To…

Sunday night marked the biggest night of the year in entertainment, The 86th Annual Academy Awards. With all of the incredible motion pictures, actors, and actresses nominated, the academy had an exceptionally tough decision on their hands. The night was filled with wonderful surprises and hilarious jokes from second-time host, Ellen Degeneres. Here’s a list of the big winners!
Best Supporting Actor: Jared Leto, Dallas Buyer’s Club
– Leto’s speech was adorable. He talked about his mom (who was also his date, too cute) and how important Dallas Buyer’s Club was to those who have died of AIDS.
Best Supporting Actress: Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years A Slave
– Not only did Lupita look absolutely divine in her stunning princess gown, but her acceptance speech ended with one of the most inspiring quotes I’ve ever heard, “When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.” (Huffington Post)
Best Actor: Matthew McConaughey, Dallas Buyer’s Club
– Alright, Alright, Alright! Possibly the smoothest man in the world, McConaughey’s speech was just as cool as him. The best part was when he offered up this piece of wisdom,”There’s three things that I need each day. One of them is something to look up to, another is something to look forward and another is someone to chase.” (Christian Post)
Best Actress: Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
– Looking fabulous in her shimmering gown, Blanchett was humbled by her win and thanked all the other amazing women in her category.
Best Motion Picture: 12 Years A Slave
– An emotional roller coaster film, 12 Years A Slave deserved to win the biggest award of the night as well as the award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Congratulations to all the winners! We’re sure they partied till the break of dawn and enjoyed every moment of it! 🙂
With regards to fashion, Kate Hudson absolutely killed it in her shimmering Atelier Versace gown. More fabulous fashions came from Jennifer Lawrence in her radiant red, low-peplum Dior Couture and Sandra Bullock in her deep blue Alexander McQueen stunner. The men looked quite dapper themselves, with the suave Jared Leto in Saint Laurent and Zac Efron in Calvin Kline Collection. We give the fashion an A+! (Eonline)

Personal Best!
The best moment of the night was when host, Ellen Degeneres, handed out pizza to the biggest movie stars in the biz. (Surprise! Many of them actually ate it!) Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie each took a piece, along with Jennifer Lawrence, Harrison Ford, and Julia Roberts. Why weren’t we invited to the world’s most star studded pizza party?
We hope everyone enjoyed the Oscars and a big congratulations to all the winners!
