Today we want to share 9 low budget costumes for Halloween. Halloween is just around the corner, and this 31st of October, we’re hopefully going to have a little bit more fun than last year! The Holiday couldn’t possibly be complete without a costume! While the rental place or Amazon are there for us, you don’t actually need to spend a ton of money on something you will wear only once (ever)!
You can create some great Halloween costumes from items and clothes you already have or can borrow from family and friends.
One of the most iconic comic book characters of all time, Superman gets special attention during Halloween. And it’s super easy and cheap to create the costume from scratch.
All you need is the Superman logo and a white shirt. If you have a few extra dollars, you can get the logo printed on a basic tee, but to be honest, printing it on a sheet of paper and attaching it to your t-shirt with pins is so much cheaper and easier!
“Men in Black”
You probably already have everything you need for this costume in your closet. It’s simple – put on your black suit (or borrow from your entrepreneur friend or cousin), crisp white shirt and some killer sunnies. That’s pretty much it, but if you want to nail the look, grab a toy gun at your local supermarket or borrow from neighbor’s kids!
Mister Rogers brings smiles wherever he goes, and this costume will do that too. Khakis, a white shirt and a red cardigan is all it takes! Don’t have a cardigan? It’s one of those pieces that your dad or uncle might lend you, or you can get it at your local second-hand shop for a couple of bucks.
Everybody loves this eccentric pet detective! And this costume is very easy to create. Just put on red trousers, a white tee and a Hawaiian or another floral print shirt.
If you have some hair to work with, puff it up with a good amount of hairspray! Don’t have a white tee?
Harry Styles is the perfect choice if you’re looking to go as some of the current superstars! This guy is famous for his eclectic style that you can easily recreate with a little bit of help from your mom or female friends.
Put on wide-legged colorful pants, a bright west or sweater vest and go crazy with jewelry (rings, necklaces). Visit your local vintage shop for some great options.
Another iconic man is Queen’s lead singer Freddy Mercury, famous for his white jeans and white wife-beater shirt. Yep, that’s all you need, plus maybe some cool fake mustache from your costume store or Amazon and a microphone stand (optional).
Brush up on the Queen repertoire so you can put on a show at the party!
The boy wizard is one of the most famous book characters of all time, so with just a little bit of effort, you’ll be super easy to recognize!
You’ll need round glasses, a wand and some eyeliner to draw a scar on your forehead. Wear simple corduroy trousers and a nerdy cardigan (or a long black cape if you happen to have one) to complete the look, and don’t forget to brush up on your spells!
Ron Swanson from Parks and Recreation
Ron is the hilarious grumpy city government official from this iconic show, and his wardrobe resembles most dad’s style.
Grab a checkered shirt, khakis, order a fake moustache and don’t forget the grumpy face. Ron is also known to love meat, so you can grab a turkey leg or stake to carry around (and snack on).
Going to a beach Halloween party? In this case, the easiest costume to opt for are the red Baywatch trunks, sunglasses and a whistle! Trust us; you’ll get a lot of attention from the ladies and will be swimming-ready at all times!
Don’t show up empty handed to this weekend’s cocktail hour. As Halloween is creeping up quickly, trying to find the perfect fall beverage that everyone will love can seem impossible. It wasn’t until one crisp, fall evening where a Tik Tok notification appeared out of nowhere and it turned out to be my saving grace. No longer am I worried about what to bring to the next holiday party this season because the ingredients to this easy to follow, step-by-step Tik Tok cocktail are already in my pantry. Introducing, the ultimate fall old fashioned.
This fall beverage satisfies that evening sweet tooth without having to indulge in all the candy. It’s combination of mulling spices and apple cider gently cuts out the bitter aftertaste that some of us newly-whiskey drinkers don’t long for. Although some don’t like to admit it, I’m not ashamed to say I prefer a sweet and decorated cocktail. That’s why this Halloween is the perfect excuse to step up your autumn cocktail game and get creative because this is too easy to pass up.
No bartender training necessary. Yep— that’s right! Even a cocktail rookie could perfect this recipe in just one take. All you have to do is follow the five steps below and watch @spiritedla’s Tik Tok for some fall-themed inspiration.
With Halloween just around the corner, we thought we would give you a few 2020 Halloween costume ideas! This year may be a little different with Covid-19, but there’s no reason you can’t throw on a fabulous costume nonetheless. To get you started, we have compiled a list featuring a few classic costumes, as well as some newer pop culture ideas to consider when you pull your outfit together.
Back to the basics for this one, Batman is always a good choice for Halloween (especially now a remake is in the works). Kids and adults alike bond over their love of the iconic superhero and for good reason. Not only is he incredibly recognizable (so you won’t have to answer the annoying “what are you supposed to be” question), he is also just really fun to dress up as. You can also go as intense or as simple as you want; you can either buy the full ensemble or don a simple all-black outfit combined with a cape and mask that will make you a recognizable Batman.
This is the perfect costume for 2020; with the mask already a critical part of the costume, you’ll have an awesome outfit that works perfectly with a Covid-19 world. The outfit is simple and can be made from items around the house. Just throw on some black clothing and one of your many masks and you’ve got yourself a ninja costume!
An oldie but a goodie, you can never go wrong with this classic Halloween look. It’s easier than ever to pull that perfect skeleton costume together; face masks can work in your favor this year and double as a Halloween costume. Check out the skeleton face masks online that are designed to look like a skeleton’s spooky smile.
Moira Rose (Schitt’s Creek)
There has never been a better time to dress up as everyone’s favorite Schitt’s Creek character, Moira Rose. The beloved sitcom premiered its final season earlier this year and received numerous Emmy awards. Grab a wig, some expensive-looking jewelry, and throw on some truly over-the-top outfits to complete the look. This is the perfect costume for not only lovers of the sitcom, but also for anyone who really needs an excuse to dress to the nines.
Geralt of Rivia (The Witcher)
For our fantasy fans, Geralt of Rivia may just be the costume you’ve been waiting for. The Witcher premiered on Netflix last December, just missing out on the Halloween festivities. With Geralt’s iconic black leather outfits and wide array of weaponry, he is a fun character to shop for. This is the ideal costume for fans of the video game, show, or even the book series. Time to pull out that fake sword!
The Hamilton craze reignited this year as Disney Plus released the movie version of the famous Broadway show. If you missed out on the Hamilton love back in 2016 (or just forgot about your obsession) now is your chance to join in on the fun. Get yourself a nice powdered wig and re-download the soundtrack to get back in the mood!
We hope you have a fantastic Halloween, and this list gives you a few new ideas for your 2020 Halloween costume.
If one thing’s for certain, Brooke Lewis has made a name for herself in the entertainment world. Not only is she known in film as a “Scream Queen”, but she is also a board-certified life coach, a celebrity dating coach, and an entrepreneur. Add to that, she is the Celebrity Ambassador of The Breaking The Chains Foundation. She will be seen in the film, ½ New Year, which is slated for release next year. We chatted with Brooke about her character in the film, her affinity for the horror genre, and the ways in which she has been a voice for female empowerment.
Cliché: What attracted you or inspired you to want to become involved in the acting industry?
Brooke Lewis: I was a very emotional child. I would literally sit underneath the television watching TV for hours on end. When I was a little girl I would put myself into the television series and I would talk to the characters as if I was one of them. So I was kooky and I still am. In addition, I loved to emote and be artistically creative with dancing and music.
Were you always interested in the horror genre? How does it feel to be known as a “Scream Queen”?
Yes. I always say, “Nobody wakes up one day and has a goal of being a famous Scream Queen.” Since I was a little girl I was obsessed with vampires and for Halloween, I would be looking for vampires because I thought that they were so sexy. On top of that, I was a girl in the 80s so I grew up watching all of the hot 70s and 80s movies. Some of those movies were Prom Night, the original Halloween, and Friday the 13th. I never dreamed that I would one day become known as “Scream Queen” in that genre.
At first, it was confusing since I grew up acting as a music theater gal in Philadelphia and then when I moved to New York, I had my first little big break when I filmed for Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, which was a mobster comedy. After that, I was doing a lot of Indie films in New York as well as mobster movies. But once the film Polycarp got released, Showtime picked it up and the movie was aired three nights a week for two years straight. All of a sudden, many horror fans were sending me fanmail and said to me, “Wow, you are the new Scream Queen.” I just embraced every minute of it and felt very blessed.
How much work and motivation did it take for you to prepare for a big role in ½ New Year?
One of my dearest friends from Philadelphia, Drew McAnany, who is the star of ½ New Year, told me after struggling in Hollywood for his lead role break for years that he is going to write himself a piece to get starred. He wrote this piece about six years ago. He wrote Pam DeLuca and I am one of the lead characters in the film. It was the most incredible gift and honor that an actress can ever get for that role.
Drew went through various directors, cast members and producers but it never got off the ground. However, one day the talented Georgia Menides came to Drew and she did a rewrite. In the summer of 2017, Drew called to tell me that the film was happening and to start getting ready for rehearsal in November. I was like, ‘OMG, it’s happening.’ I had years to prepare creatively but I had to prepare real quickly mentally. Last but least, this role was very special for me to play.
Can you describe your character, Pam? Do you relate to her at all?
She is a caricature of my badass girls who I grew up with back in Philadelphia and in New Jersey. Pam has great success in her business and great success in her friendship. However, she is not having great success in her love life. Let’s just say, she is a bit of a cougar and may be similar character wise to Stifler’s mom in the American Pie franchise.
Yes. Pam is a career gal like me. She is in Hollywood. I have dedicated a lot of my adult life to being an actress, being a board-certified life coach and a celebrity dating coach. I chose to not have children and I chose to not get married young so that’s totally Pam. Now, I am blessed to be engaged to a wonderful guy who supports my career. The huge difference between Pam and I is that Pam is focused on her career and not her love life.
What’s the message of the film? What should viewers pay attention to when watching the film?
The message of the film is actually the tagline, which is, the friends are the family that we choose. I feel like when you move to a big city like Los Angeles or New York to pursue your dreams and your career, you often times leave your family. So you end up choosing your friends to be around and they end up being your dysfunctional family. I would say ½ New Year has created an additional family for me, Drew, Georgia and Tom Morash.
Typically, when you hear of a coming of age film, you think it tends to be a film language for young, but it’s more of a coming of age film for people in their 20’s and 30’s. As a dating expert and a board-certified life coach, I always say, “You can have it all, but you can’t have it all at the same time.” The characters in this film are exemplified where one person is having success in his career but not in his love life. There are so many topics that this film covers. I think ½ New Year is going to be an Indie film sleeper hit at the Film Festival next year.
How has it felt winning over 70 awards for your work? Were there any specific awards that meant a lot to you to win?
Every day I am thanking God for the gratitude and for these beautiful statues, trophies, and certificates that I have on my wall in my office. I want more for my career. I want another television series which I am fighting to get. I have had my ups and downs being in this industry for 20 years professionally, and I have learned to stay humble and grateful.
Yes. There were two actor awards that I was honored with that touched my soul. The first award was Best Actress in a drama for a short film called Sprinkles. Then this year I was honored for the Best Actress in an Independent Film for Psycho Therapy, which is a thriller. So when I am honored with these awards, it touches me on a deep level and it makes me like I am doing something right.
What have been some of your favorite experiences in your career?
There were so many. It’s always the people who have supported my career and those who I supported their career. I cherish all the projects that I’ve done including the charity events and the red carpet events. All of my fans have been so loyal to me over the years. I wouldn’t be at this point in my career without all of that support.
Not only are you a successful actress, but you are also an expert as a celebrity dating coach. How did you develop an interest to want to be a TV dating expert?
I dated a lot and wrote a book about it. I was one of those women who loved dating. Once I became a successful board certified life coach, people would ask me for my advice. When my acting clients came in, they would start crying about their auditions because they didn’t get the film they wanted. So I would then break it down and say to them, “What are you really crying about?” “What’s the rejection that you really feel?” As it turns out, nine times out of ten, they are actually upset that the guy that they went on a date with the other night didn’t call them back.
I find it interesting how I was able to merge my personal experiences with my professional experiences.
As a board certified life coach, how do you feel your book, Coaching from a Professed Hot Mess, sets itself apart from other motivational books? What do you hope readers take away when reading the book?
In my book, Coaching from a Professed Hot Mess, I share some of my own personal experiences with dating and offer dating advice. In addition, I talk about having body image issues and struggling with weight as a woman. So my book is tended to make readers laugh and cry at times and to support men, women, teens, and LGBTQ communities. You can find this book on Amazon.com or at Barnes and Noble. I think the way my book sets itself apart from other motivational books is that they are structured through a therapy standpoint or a self-help standpoint. On the other hand, my book is simply from the heart. Also, I feel that my book demonstrates that we are all imperfect and a hot mess.
I hope that the readers can walk away with one relevant piece of information and that it supports each one of them individually. I always say if I can take away one nugget of powerful information that could better my life then it was a great experience.
Can you talk about the ways in which you have been a voice on female empowerment? Why did you feel it was important to take a stand on helping young girls and young women be their truest selves and to help motivate them?
As a woman in Hollywood and having to be living far away from my family, I have had to navigate as an independent woman and have had to pay the bills. Nothing has come easy for me. I had to work super hard for everything I got. So I write to empower other women who are going through the same challenges as me and to let them know that if you choose powerfully in your life, whatever the consequences are, you will come out shining in some way. You just need to keep going and not let the challenges that you face in society break you down. As I’ve mentioned before, you can have it all, but you can’t have it all at the same time.
I enjoy working with female empowerment charities. For example, I am a Celebrity Ambassador for The Breaking The Chains Foundation (BCTF), which is for men and women. This foundation empowers women who deal with eating disorders, body imaging issues, and body shaming. We can find the strength within, especially women, to get through the challenges in life. In addition, women always have to be willing to walk. That’s where the power lies.
I felt it was important for me to take a stand because I was a young girl once and I was a teen girl once who faced a lot of challenges. My parents got divorced when I was 2 years old and I struggled with body and emotional issues. Nowadays, young girls have shared with me their stories on my talk show publicly or personally about what they are going through. It is pretty amazing how we as adults have to give young girls more credit because they are wiser and more in touch with their feelings than we care to admit. When I have 12 or 14-year-old girls coming to me with their issues, and I ask them, “What is the biggest challenge that you are faced with at this moment?” They say to me, “I am so worried about making the right choices in life.” It’s actually amazing how they actually think about adult issues and they think forward about their future and what it will be like.
Aside from acting and being a celebrity dating coach, you are involved in giving back to many charity foundations. Why was it important for you to get involved in so many charitable causes?
I am a firm believer in giving back. I think that whatever little gift that I have been given as a celebrity in some way, it is my duty to help others and put a smile on someone’s face who is facing a challenge. On a selfish note, I faced a lot of challenges. For instance, I would get depressed if I gained five pounds last week or if I didn’t book the television series that I was up for.
At this point in your life, who was the person who helped guide you to get you to where you are now?
I have been blessed with wonderful people in my life and I am so grateful for that. My two favorite Hollywood icons are Elizabeth Taylor and Mae West. They are my forever icons because they are two powerhouse women who beat the Boys Club of Hollywood. They have inspired me and I hope one day I will have the opportunity to make a memorable mark as they have.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not acting or working?
It’s very rare that I am doing something else besides from acting or working. I am a Broadway girl and I love musical theater. I also love wine and tequila tasting. I enjoy going to the movies and watching Netflix on the couch with my fiancé. We would watch The Real Housewives.
Are there any future projects that you are working on or will be working on?
I am still running the Film Festival with a couple of short films. I want to shout to Markus Redmond who wrote and directed Allen + Mille, which is a short romance film that I produced and got to star in with one of my amazing talented besties Courtney Gains. We have been extremely grateful to be part of this piece that we are running around. In addition, another short film that I got to act in was Rotting Love. Lastly, I also got to act inEvolution War which is a feature film. Evolution War was directed by one of my favorite Sci-Fi directors Neil Johnson.
Unfortunately, Halloween has come and gone. Now we’ve got to start looking forward to the rest of the holiday season. If you want Halloween to last all year, then the end is never welcome. But just because it’s over doesn’t mean you have to start ordering those Peppermint Bark Frappuccinos or break out that ugly Christmas sweater just yet. Want to keep the Halloween spirit going for a little while longer? Check out some of the best celebrity costumes this Halloween.
Cute Celebrity Couples
We all know that one couple that goes all out on Halloween. Often the same ideas are repeated every year and it can get a bit stale. But that works in favor for those couples who actually decide to step outside the box. These aren’t your typical vampire or Tarzan and Jane costumes. Props to the celebrities who put a bit more time and effort into crafting a costume-duo that really took the Halloween spirit to another level.
Heidi Klum and Boyfriend Tom Kaulitz as Shrek and Fiona
Heidi Klum knows how to dress to the nines, even for Halloween. She and boyfriend Tom Kaulitz hit their Halloween party at Lavo New York in elaborate Shrek and Fiona costumes.

Neil Patrick Harris and Husband David Burtka as Westley and Inigo
This one pays homage to the cult classic 1987 film The Princess Bride. Harris and Burtka were also attending Heidi Klum’s Halloween bash.

Bella Hadid and The Weeknd as Lydia Deetz and Beetlejuice
Maybe The Weeknd had some help with his costume from his model girlfriend, Bella Hadid. At any rate, they must’ve gotten tons of compliments from their nod to Beetlejuice.

Joe Jonas and Fiancé Sophie Turner as Gomez and Morticia Addams
Yes, the Addams family characters usually crop up at Halloween, but Jonas and his fiancé Sophie Turner hit it pretty far out of the park. (Photo Credit @joejonas via Instagram).
Hoda isn’t the only celebrity who chose to crossplay for Halloween, but she may well have done one of the best costumes. She sported her Elton John look for the “Today” show Halloween celebration at Rockefeller Plaza.

Victoria Justice as an Ouija Board
Talk about thinking outside of the box. Victoria Justice’s costume was creepy, sultry, and unique. The star turned heads when she attended Just Jared’s 7th Annual Halloween Party in Los Angeles as a spirit board. (Photo Credit: @victoriajustice via Instagram).
Halloween is my favorite holiday: costumes, candy, and fright, what’s not to love? Aside from practicing my zombie makeup and watching D.I.Y. videos of jack-o-lantern displays, one of the best things to do in celebration of the festivities is read horror books. There’s something so nice and spooky about flipping—or scrolling if you have a Kindle—through the pages of a thriller in the crisp fall air with a cup of hot tea. The scarier the book the better. So, here are my top five recommended novels that will be sure to get you in the haunting spirit of Halloween.
The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris:
I know we’ve all seen Jonathan Demme’s cinematic masterpiece, however there is so much more terror in novel it was based on. Thomas Harris’ The Silence of the Lambs dives into FBI agent-in-training Clarice Starling’s experience as she helps track down a serial killer with the alias Buffalo Bill. Starling has to try and stop Buffalo Bill with the help of Hannibal Lecter, a famous serial killer, cannibal, psychiatrist. Harris writes from the perspective of Starling, Bill, and Lecter throughout this thriller novel, but Hannibal’s by far is the most chilling. Hannibal is disturbing, he’s a genius held behind bars, a straight jacket, and a muzzle to prevent his violent outbursts. When he speaks to Starling we can tell that he’s picking apart her psychological identity. He doesn’t want to help catch Buffalo Bill, he wants an opportunity to get inside someone else’s mind just for the fun of it. Hannibal is a true psychopath, and comes alive on the page unlike any character I’ve ever read before. The Silence of the Lambs will make you think about the complexity of the crimes within it for days, it’s utterly fascinating.
The Shining by Stephen King:
The Shining film directed by Stanley Kubrick is a great movie, however it doesn’t even hold a candle to the Stephen King novel it was based on. The Shining follows the Torrance family: Jack, father and aspiring playwright recovering from alcoholism, Wendy, mother who is overwhelmed with anxieties, and Danny, their five-year-old son with a sixth sense and a strange imaginary friend. Jack’s last hope at getting back on his feet after a number of career failures is working as the caretaker at the Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. He and his family are trapped there in one of the harshest winter storms and all hell breaks loose. The Overlook Hotel is plagued with a massive amount of tragedies, and a lot of insane spirits which can only be seen by Danny. They possess Jack and put his family in grave danger. This is one of the scariest books I have ever read. The ghosts in the hotel actually have real histories and the entire novel, cover to back, holds this tension that becomes tighter and tighter until it ends with a bang. If you’re looking for a story that will make you jump at shadows and have you sweating bullets, this is the book for you.
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie:
If you want to read a real mystery, you need to get Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. This book follows ten people who have all been mysteriously invited to a house on an isolated island by unknown hosts. During their stay, they are accompanied by a gramophone accusing each one of them of murder and escaping the justice they deserved. One by one, each of the guests are dying and it’s up to the remaining visitors to find out who the murderer is before everyone dies. There is nothing straightforward about this novel, it is full of twists and turns that will puzzle you until the very end. It’s one hell of a mystery.
Hammers on Bone by Cassandra Khaw:
Hammers on Bone is full of magical creatures, demons, gods, and even aliens. It starts off with John Persons, a private investigator and ancient magical being, in present day London receiving an unusual request from an unusual client. A ten-year-old boy wants to hire Persons to kill his abusive stepfather. However, Persons discovers that the stepfather is not totally human. Khaw writes in a way that’s easy to read and very entertaining. This horror-fantasy is fast and monstrous, you’ll be gripping the pages until the very end.
The Missing by Sarah Langan:
This novel takes the zombie epidemic to a whole new level. The Missing takes place in Bedford, Maine where an inexplicable mill fire has created sulfuric clouds that have killed off the surrounding environment. Since then, the town has been abandoned until fourth grade teacher, Lois Larkin, decides to take her class on a field trip. They are exposed to a virus that causes all those infected to become flesh-eating monsters. Langan has masterfully created her own insane disease. The Missing has interesting characters, horrific details to describe the disturbing scenes of zombism, and frightening tension that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

So, Halloween really isn’t your thing, is it? It’s already the end of October and you haven’t even considered a Halloween costume. Well, little did you know that your new job requires all employees to dress up, or maybe your best friend is just begging you to come along to a dreadful Halloween party, or maybe the spirit of Halloween possessed you and you just want to be a part of the fun. No matter the reason, you’re stuck coming up with a last minute Halloween costume. The horror!
Save the terror for the haunted houses and gross looking Halloween themed treats! I have some last minute costumes that you can throw together in a matter of minutes just from your closet! I’ve got a whole spectrum of your classic ghouls to some more out-of-the-box characters. There’s something on this list for everyone! Here are 6 easy, last minute Halloween costumes you can make from your closet.
What you need:
Necklace with an odd stone or charm
All the rings that you can find
Dark or red lipstick (optional)
Witch’s hat (optional)
The witch is a classic! While it may be an obvious costume choice, I threw it up here because it’s easy to get caught up in the idea that you need all of these fancy costume props to look the part. Everything you need is right there in your closet! All you need is a creepy-looking dress, some odd jewelry choices, and your charm. You will get this costume done so fast, it will feel like magic.
*Psssst! Do you have two other friends in search of a Halloween costume? Go as the Charmed characters (original or reboot)!*
What you need:
Ears headband (optional)
I’m sure you’ve seen the infamous cat costume hundreds of times. Sure, it’s convenient, but honestly a little overdone. Dressing up as a bat is a more unique option with the same amenity. All you have to do is throw on an entirely black outfit with the essential black cardigan. Once you have on the cardigan, bobby-pin the loose ends to the sleeves to create your bat wings. The ears headband is a helpful detail to the costume, but definitely not crucial. I have on some bat ears, but if you don’t have access to those, you can always use those cat ears you had purchased from Halloween’s past!
What you need:
Tape or Velcro
Here’s a more goofy twist to the Halloween costume ideas. Everybody loves (or detests) a good pun. Once you have your stealthy, all-black, perfect getaway outfit on, it’s time to attach your unfortunate victims. Go through your cabinets and find all of the cereal boxes you can, then tape or Velcro them right onto your clothes. If you have time, you can certainly paint on some fake blood for some extra gory details. Maybe you’ll get some laughs, probably a couple of eye-rolls, but you’ll definitely get lots of saved time!
*Psssst! You can also turn this into a good couple’s costume! One person can dress as the cereal and another can be the milk!*
4) Street Performer
What you need:
Fingerless gloves (optional)
This costume is meant for the talented! Want to show off your musical skills to your crush? Here’s the perfect subtle excuse to do just that! Just make sure your instrument of choice is easily transportable.
What you need:
Black lipstick (optional)
Wednesday Addams is a Halloween favorite who is often overlooked. She is an adored classic with such an easy look to assemble. The toughest part here is mastering her infamous scowl.
*Psssst! Going with a group? You can easily turn Wednesday Addams into a goth costume and have each person in your group go as another high school clique stereotype!*
6)Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
What you need:
Light blue or white dress/shirt/pants
Bare with me, I know this is an odd one, but trust me, it’s a great choice for those of you who want to stand out for creativity. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is the perfect last minute costume choice because she’s a character that literally everyone knows and her look is completely up to interpretation, making this an easy costume to design in minutes. Being a metaphor for LSD, you can go as intricate or as vague as you have time for! For all of my bohos out there with a great imagination, this is the costume for you.
*Psssst! Here’s another great couple’s costume idea! Rather than Lucy, you can easily turn this costume into Mother Nature and have a matching Father Time!*
In the year 1978, Jamie Lee Curtis played Laurie Strode in the original Halloween horror flick. Now, in 2018, Michael Myers is back again, after various sequels. But this one is different. It picks up where the original 1978 film left off. The new reprisal of ‘Halloween’ premiered on Wednesday, October 17, in Hollywood. The actress told Us Weekly that viewers will “go a little bonkers. They love it. They love it, they love it, they love it!” Curtis’s character Laurie was first seen in ‘78 as a high school student, who notices Michael Myers stalking her on Halloween. We all know what happens next. Curtis has made three previous appearances in the Halloween series, with the new release marking her fourth.
Jamie Lee Curtis on the Reprisal of ‘Halloween’ and Her Character Laurie After Forty Years
Jamie Lee Curtis also spoke to Us Weekly about the impact of 40 years passing and how it has shaped her character in 2018. She told the publication, “I think she’s a victim. I think she’s a victim of terrible trauma. I think she’s a victim of horrific violence perpetrated on her by a stranger, a madman, 40 years ago…It has ruined her life, it’s branded her. I think we have to see how much pain she’s in before you can take pleasure in her preparation for taking back the power.” The newest Halloween film is in theaters now, so go catch a glimpse of Michael Myers on the big screen and see if Curtis was right. “Go a little bonkers.”
Let’s get one thing straight: There’s no man in Hollywood like the one and only Omar Dorsey. He can do anything, and we can all say he is a talented force of nature. He’s acted in a wide range of genres, from playing comedic roles to gangster roles, and now starring in the hit drama series, Queen Sugar. When he’s off the stage, Dorsey’s whole life has been about inclusiveness and bringing everyone under the umbrella of art. We chatted with Omar about playing “Hollywood” Desonier in Queen Sugar, as well as his upcoming role in Halloween, along with how to become an over-the-top actor and what his life is like when he’s not acting.
Cliché: First, I want to congratulate you on your successful run in your acting career so far. I can’t say enough from you starring in The Blind Side, Django Unchained, and Starsky & Hutch, and many more movies, including television shows, to now starring in the hit drama series, Queen Sugar. When looking back to where you first began your acting career journey to where you are now, how much work and motivation does it take to accomplish these major feats? Most importantly, though, how much work did it take you to become a rising star and a professional actor?
Omar Dorsey: Well, you know, it takes some time. I always told people it’s a marathon and not a sprint. When I first started, my first movie was Road Trip and that was 19 years ago, which it doesn’t seem like it was two decades ago. In 1999, I was still in grad school. So it’s been a journey from that date. You have your ups and your downs. You have these high points and you also have these really low points in time but you have to stay the course. And you hope when you get to the other end when you are 40 years old, or whenever that time is, you can say it was all worth it, which it was for me.
I have been on stage since I was 5 years old. My mother was a theater director, so she always had me in acting classes, being in football practice, band practice, piano lessons, and all of that. But I really gratitude a whole lot to the acting. It’s a skill and a process. You are saying a rising star, well I have been doing this for around 37 years. It might seem like it’s something overnight but it’s just a whole lot of work that got me to this point.
How would you say the show, Queen Sugar, has made you a ‘leading man’ in your career? In other words, how has starring in this show impacted your daily life?
I played a lot of gangsters, a lot of comedy people, funny guys, and the first time you see me playing somebody who was a loving man, and then people are gravitating to that. Because in real life, I am a real dude. I am a real person.
Well I been on a lot of hit shows, including Ray Donovan, but it’s just something about the character that really draws people in. Outside of that, nothing really does change. You understand your highs right now. And tomorrow it might not be. But you just want to try and stay the course. Whatever path is right for you, you want to try and stay on that for as long as you can, because then people will continue to like you. Because after time people will stop liking you.
It must be a great honor to have worked alongside the iconic Oprah Winfrey, the executive producer of Queen Sugar. How would you describe your relationship with Oprah? In addition, were some of the cast members of the show your friends or actors that you have starred in your past shows or movies?
Oprah is the best boss in the world, man. It’s my fourth year in a row working with her. We have a lot of great conversations. She is really awesome — including Ava DuVernay — and the rest of Hollywood. There is no bigger fan in your corner than Oprah Winfrey. And I just appreciate her for what she has done for me.
No. I have known Dondre Whitfield for 4 to 10 years. I have known Rutina Wesley for 5 to 6 years. And I have known Kofi Siriboe for two years prior to when I had met him on the show. We had a pretty good relationship. Everybody else on the show, it was the time first meeting them. But we are all family now.
Can you describe your character, Hollywood Desonier? What are some of the character traits that you share in life with the role you play in the show?
He’s a really good gentleman. He is easygoing, confident in himself and he had a lot of downs in his life. It is just the combination of all the hurt and strife in his life. He found the right woman that he wants to spend the rest of his life with and the family that he wants to be a part of. He found the life that he’s been through.
I am not really easygoing. I am a gentleman. I love my wife. I might not be smothering her every time when she’s right there all the time. It is sort of hard for me to be like that because I travel the world so much. But I try to be with her as much as I can.
What’s the message you hope fans take away from the show and the lessons from the show?
Life is full of surprises. It’s just the way family could work through things. This is just real life and that is what we are reflecting. I just want people to look when they watch the show, no matter if you’re black, white, no matter what race you are, no matter what gender you are, you can see yourself in these characters and see yourself in this family, because sometimes family is messy. But for most people, family is a beautiful thing. I just want people to know that this is exactly what family looks like.
There’s also more exciting news as you will also be seen in the eleventh installment of Halloween. How does it feel to be part of the long-lasting franchise of Halloween?
Oh my goodness. It’s so amazing because I have a great relationship with Danny McBride, the producer of Halloween, who wrote it, and with David Gordon Green, who is the director of it and one of the producers of the film. And they just called me and offered me the role, and of course, I wanted to do a horror film. Of course, I wanted to do a film chasing Michael Myers all around town. Besides from Jamie Lee Curtis. It was just tremendous, man. I just heard Danny was going to be doing Halloween. This is going to be extremely scary but it’s going to be so good.
What was your favorite part of playing Sheriff Barker? Did you relate to the character at all?
Uhh…The character himself. You know? He’s a jerk. He thinks he’s the boss hall of the town and he treats everyone poorly. He runs the town. Michael Myers or Lori doesn’t run the town. This is Sheriff Barker’s job. It is just fun that I will be playing the jerk in the film. I have been playing the nice guy on television for the last 3 years. I am lucky to be playing the jerk again.
I don’t know. But I can be jerky from time-to-time. But I don’t know if I can be that extreme.
Why do you think both fans of the series and people, in general, should be excited to see Halloween? How would you compare this one to previous films in the series?
You know man, I will be honest with you, with Jamie Lee Curtis coming back, she’s a badass looking like she can go run a marathon right now and beat up everybody in the world. And David Gordon Green with his filmmaking is just one of the great old-time writers of our generation. This is going to be a scary tale, man.
This is the one that actually picks up. Of course, the timeline has changed, this is like 40 years after the original one. It doesn’t really have to do with the other ones.
What do you do on your “off” days when you aren’t acting?
I don’t know even know when that is. My wife and I have been traveling on vacation. I will workout and just try to be creative. I am continuing to create and film for television shows for whatever I am trying to write. That is the next step.
Are there any future projects that you are working on or will be working on?
I have a couple of films that I am developing right now. One of them with me being in a comedy, a movie where I am playing a private investigator, and then a young black client who is falsely accused. I am also in a movie involving the Michael Brown story.

If there’s anything we love more than dressing up for Halloween, it’s seeing who or what our favorite celebrities dress up as. For Halloween this year, we’ve seen our favorite celebrities dress up as their favorite icons (Karlie Kloss as Marilyn Monroe), movie characters (Jessica Alba as Juno), and supervillains (Rita Ora as Poison Ivy). It’s also the perfect time to dress up as your favorite Stranger Things character, complete with a box of Eggo waffles (we’re looking at you, Wells Adams), since Season 2 was recently released on Netflix. Whether you’re dressing up this year or staying in, you won’t want to miss some of our favorite celebrity Halloween costumes.
It’s time to get your makeup brushes together because Halloween is right around the corner! Instagram is the best place to go for beauty inspiration and already we’re starting to see out of the box, kind of terrifying, but most of all, fun makeup tutorials for Halloween. If you’re having trouble deciding what you are going to be, fear not. I’ve gathered some of the most popular and trending Halloween makeup looks for you to try out this October.
It’s no surprise that a character from a movie that made $189,400,000 its opening weekend would be a popular costume this Halloween. People have already started to get creative with their versions of Pennywise from the movie It, but this one from @venomtoyaveins has to be my favorite.
