Not Just Harry Styles

Harry Styles quite literally broke the Internet, garnering over 9 million likes on Instagram, of his first Vogue cover. Donning a Gucci gown, Styles stands as the first-ever solo male to do so. His gender-defying appearance has brought both adoration and contention to the table. Many have applauded him for taking steps to overtly represent gender-neutrality in fashion but conservative critics reject his stepping out of the rigid lines between male and female. His work, however, as masks the decades of gender-defying that other artists and designers have done to pave the way for him to act heretofore – it’s not just Harry Styles.

Unisex fashion in the modern day can largely be attributed to the year 1968, a time where both the feminist ideals of the Women’s Movement and the global Space Race contributed to a ‘Space Age’ in fashion. In her book Sex and Unison: Fashion, Feminism, and the Sexual Revolution, University of Maryland professor Jo Paoletti references Paris runways on which designers like Pierre Cardin and Andre Courreges delved into the idea of exploration in simple silhouettes and synthetic fabrics, helping to muddy the burgeoning gender of clothes. Cardin’s “Cosmocorps” collection particularly highlighted unisexism offering zipped sweaters and belted jumpsuits that could be worn by both men and women.

Unisex clothing only persisted temporarily, however, ironically acting as agents of promoting gendered clothing rather than ambiguity. Paoletti writes “part of the appeal of adult unisex fashion was the sexy contrast between the wearer and the clothes, which actually called attention to the male or female body.” Gendered fashion then naturally became characterized by their target audiences, there only two “boy or girl” definitions for clothes.

Since the 1990s, this trend has hiccuped to famous fashion brands that have established non-binary fashion as a progressive movement. Moreso, it became attached to celebrity media helping to set a playing field for others. Think Kurt Cobain in a traditional baby doll dress slap on the cover of “The Face” or gender-defying performances given by Prince. Either way, genderfluid fashion was now unsheathed from the world of high-end runway fashion and exposed to the general public via these popular faces. It makes sense as to why TeenVogue had to write and title an entire article deattributing the movement to these pop stars.

At present, there is a new creative collective that has taken the reins on genderfluid fashion. Though Harry Styles is at the forefront, sporting many iconic looks like Marc Jacobs at the Brit Awards and his Met Gala work by Gucci genius Alessandro Michele, there have been others that paved the road that Styles now leads on. Jaden Smith has appeared as an advocate of androgynous dressing since starring in Louis Vuitton’s SS16 womenswear campaign. He has also started his own gender-neutral clothing line MSFTSrep. But Styles’ work should not be consequently discredited as it takes multiple kegs to make a cultural change occur.

And we can look forward to where that came from.

The Most Influential Album Releases of 2017

No matter how much hype an album gets in the moment, it’s easy to forget about it once the next one comes out. But here at Cliché, we are firm believers in giving credit where it is due. As 2017 comes to an end, it’s important to remember that in the midst of all the madness, we were truly blessed with some amazing releases in every genre from hip-hop to rock to pop. To make choosing your favorite album of 2017 just a bit easier, we rounded up a list of all the most influential album releases of 2017.

I See You by the xx
Genre: Indie Rock/Dream Pop

The third studio album from the dream-pop power-duo, I See You marked the return of the band after a four-year hiatus. After years of uncertainty, I See You ushered in an era of creative stability for the xx, exploring countless new sounds to much critical acclaim.

Harry Styles Re-Introduces Himself in Debut Album

Yes, it’s true. The Harry Styles finally took his swing at releasing his own music. Did he hit it out of the park? YES, HE DID! It was only a matter of time for Harry to drop his own music, but we all knew this was coming. Since his days in One Direction, die hard fans knew Harry was scheming away during his flights with his brown journal that was basically glued to his hand. It made a cameo in almost every paparazzi photo that had fans wondering, “What is in that journal of yours?”

Well, I think it’s safe to assume that they were lyrics to his debut self-titled album which released last Friday, May 12th. That’s when the heavens opened and all former/current Directioners went off in the Twittersphere, expressing their love of the album. And, they’re right! They have an absolute valid point to type in all caps because we agree.
A few weeks prior to the release of his album, we were already familiar with “Sign of the Times” and “Sweet Creature.” This isn’t the 2011 upbeat Up All Night sound. In these two songs alone, you can already hear the huge influence Harry had on Made in the A.M. whose tracks were very folk sounding versus pop. OK, I digress. This isn’t about One Direction. We’re focusing on Harry.

First-time listeners of Harry most likely had to second guess who they were listening to. The fact that we’re clearly focused on one solid voice allows you to realize how well he fits this genre of rock n’ roll and pop-rock. In several tracks, we get a hint of The Struts to Weezer. The fluidity of his voice is nothing new but for those finally taking the image of Harry being a pop-infused boy band member, it could understandably be a shocker.
The absolute favorite track of ours is “Woman,” which gives you that “Benny and The Jets” vibe, followed by “Carolina.” The 10-track album inevitably had people searching for that one “Taylor Swift song” which some speculate is “Two Ghosts.” With lyrics such as “Same lips red, same eyes blue. Same white shirt, couple more tattoos,” I kind of want to make the assumption, too. But, we’ll let you be the judge of that.

Harry, we are in your favor. You have undoubtedly showed us that you are able to handle this solo career. This is a whole new chapter for you and we’re here for it.

Internet Wants Emma Watson and Harry Styles To Date

Welp, the internet wants Emma Watson and Harry Styles to date.
At tonight’s 2014 British Fashion Awards, One Direction main man Styles presented Watson with the British Style Award. And, according to E! Online, fans all over declared their love on social media at the idea of the two Brits together.
One fan tweeted, “’Harry and Emma’ For once December is a good time to be alive.”

Even Emma Watson herself seemed flustered as she accepted her award, saying, “Harry Styles just said the words, ‘He for She,’ so that’s really cool.”
Styles, of course, was referencing Watson’s foundation supporting gender equality.
This prompted another fan to tweet, “all i want is Harry and Emma to discuss the importance of gender  equality together.”
But really, don’t the actress and boy bander look good together? They definitely both have style; just look at that Watson’s sexy white jumpsuit and Styles’ striped suit.
We can only hope the famous pair felt a spark so we can see their beautiful selves together.
