5 Women That Could Have Hosted the 2019 Oscars

by

With the 2019 Oscars just a little over a month away, it was announced that the show will go on without a host. Kevin Hart was originally appointed to host this year’s telecast. However, after old tweets from the comedian resurfaced, which were explicitly homophobic in nature, Hart decided to step down from his hosting duties. He explained on Twitter that he “did not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past”. Fellow comedian, Ellen DeGeneres revealed on her show during an interview with Hart about the controversy that she pleaded to the Academy to rehire Hart as host of the award show because she felt that he has “grown and apologized and has apologized again.” Ultimately, however, Hart stuck to his initial decision and not host the show. This prompted the Academy to announce that the show will not have a host, and instead, will feature high profile names to announce and present each category.

If Kevin Hart had gone through with hosting the Oscars, it would have been the fifth year in a row that a man has hosted. The last time a woman was named host was back in 2014 when Ellen DeGeneres was given the honor. In a time when the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements are flourishing in our society, and rightfully so, it is rather peculiar that the Academy did not think to designate a woman as host of the show. Unfortunately, it is not happening this year. However, here is a list of 5 powerful women that could have hosted the 2019 Oscars. Hey, there’s always next year!

Wanda Sykes

Can anybody think of a better apology to the LGBT community than to have another openly gay comedian, Wanda Sykes, host the 2019 Oscars? She’s lovable, funny, and would have brought something different to the Oscars than what we have seen before. Maybe one day, Wanda will have the honor.

Tracee Ellis Ross

Black-ish star, Tracee Ellis Ross has no shortage of hosting experience. This daughter of a musical legend has hosted several music award shows, among others. She is also beloved, hilarious and relatable to so many. She would have been an amazing host!

Maya Rudolph

When you think of Saturday Night Live, you can’t help but think of Maya Rudolph. Also the daughter of a music icon, Rudolph made viewers laugh for seven years on SNL, with her many famous impersonations such as Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand, and Beyonce. Like Ross and Sykes, there is not a bad thing to say about Maya Rudolph. She would have made an excellent host for the 2019 Oscars.

Leslie Jones

Following in the footsteps of Maya Rudolph, Leslie Jones has been a standout on Saturday Night Live since 2014. She is also known for her impersonation of Oprah Winfrey, in addition to Whoopi Goldberg and Omarosa. In 2016, following the release of Ghostbusters, Jones became the target of Twitter users making racially charged attacks. This forced her to leave social media. Not long after, she was targeted again after several private photos were released on her personal website, which had been hacked. After these two unfortunate incidents, she gained an overwhelming amount of support from her Hollywood peers, as well as fans alike. Hosting the 2019 Oscars would have been a big “F U” to her attackers and haters.

Whoopi Goldberg

On the December 11, 2018 episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg seemed to offer her services to host the 2019 Oscars. “I realize I may not be anybody’s first choice. But…” Whoopi has hosted the Oscars four times in the past: 1993, 1995, 1998, and 2001, and she never disappointed! She has the experience, she’s a legend, she’s honest, and she genuinely loves the movies. How about a fifth time, Whoopi?

The 2019 Oscars will air on February 24 on ABC.

Night School Review

by

Night School stars Kevin Hart as Teddy, a man who had dropped out of high school because of a learning disability. Unfortunately, when he loses his job years later, he needs to attend Night School in order to get his GED, which would help him get a new, better job.

In one scene where Teddy and his girlfriend are at his job, he tries to open a bottle of champagne and the cork hits a propane tank. An explosion occurs and Teddy is thrown from the building onto his car. This was pretty funny; it showed Kevin Hart’s talent as a comedian. I liked Tiffany Haddish’s character Carrie because, while previous roles she’s played were sometimes inappropriate to me, in this film she combined her comedic side and her acting ability into a mellow role, and I liked seeing a different side of her. Though there was a scene that was a little over dramatic where Carrie whooped Teddy with a belt in an effort to get him to return to Night School, Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish did have such an amazing chemistry as a comic duo. Another Night School student, Jaylen (played by Romany Malco), was funny when he introduced himself to the class. I could not understand what he was talking about, and when he mentioned his wife and aliens all together, it made no sense but was funny to me.

The comedy in this movie was alright. There were some laugh out moments, but it didn’t have me laughing throughout the entire movie. Usually whenever I’m at Kevin Hart movie, I’m laughing from beginning to the end, but I didn’t feel that way when watching this movie.

The whole message to me was about if you don’t succeed the first time, don’t give up.  I appreciated Kevin Hart making a movie that teaches young adults that you’re never too old to get your diploma or degree. As a person who has struggled during testing, it was nice to see the movie acknowledge the learning disability problems some people struggle with when taking tests, while combining that with comedy.  I think we should look deep into the movie and its highlighting of many people who are not testing well to see why they struggle with processing information.

2017 Oscar Host Predictions

by

2016 oscars photo

The 2016 Oscars are now behind us but somehow we can’t help but to wonder who might be asked to host the 2017 Oscars. For us award show junkies who are seemingly on the edge of our seats waiting for the final announcement (even when we might now who the winner will be), it’s only second nature to think about who might host next years Oscars.

While the 2016 Oscars we’re riddled with controversy and boycotts, it was somewhat of a relief to see Chris Rock was out there trying to lighten the mood while highlighting some of Hollywood truths when it comes to diversity, opportunity and general fairness when recognizing amazing actors and actresses of all races, not just black actors. His introduction surely rubbed a few people the wrong way but given the circumstances, we should applaud Chris for being courageous enough to host this years Oscars. We think it’s also important to note that this years Oscars had the lowest rating in the past 8 years.

So how do we get more people to watch the 2017 Oscars? Good question right? Well it starts with having a really awesome host so with that in mind, we put together a short list of people we fell might just get the invitation.

Jamie Foxx photo

1. Jamie Foxx: Yeah, we know it’s all about the hear and now BUT the word on the street is that not only did Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes secretly get married but that they also have a 3 month old baby on the way. We can’t help but to think that around Oscar time, people will be chatting up Jamie Foxx and his new family. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

2. The Rock: Hollywood can’t get enough of Dewayne Johnson aka “The Rock.” The charismatic actor and ex professional wrestler knows how to entertain and audience and is well spoken. A recent People’s Choice Award winner, The Rock would totally rock as the host of the 2017 Ocars.

will smith photo

3. Will Smith: Okay so this might be a stretch but as someone who strongly boycotted this years Oscars, who else could help increase viewership and get the Oscars back on track better than Will Smith. Ranked as the most bankable star
world-wide by Forbes in 2014, Will Smith is a fan favorite all over the world. While Will has never won an Oscar, we’re betting he’d win over the audience if he were to host next years Oscars.

4. Kevin Hart: Kevin Hart is one of the funniest human beings on the planet. The rambunctious and energetic comedian was almost the host of the 2016 Oscars so I don’t think it’s a far stretch to think that 2017 might just be his year. Kevin’s been on record saying that he’d love to host the Oscars. Can you imagine the seguay into the opening of the Oscars after laughing for 10 minutes straight? We think it’d be pretty awesome.

ice cube photo

5. Ice Cube: This one might be a stretch as Cube rarely hosts any awards show but people gravitate towards Ice Cube. The successful musician slash actor always finds a way to remain even kill despite the situation or circumstance. I think the audience would enjoy having Ice Cube as their host.

6. Vin Diesel: Who doesn’t like the Diesel. The Fast & Furious star who’s won several MTV Movie Awards is always a fan favorite. His deep sultry voice can command everyone’s attention. Diesel also has a playful side to him. Having 3 children including his daughter Pauline (named in memory of his good friend Paul Walker), Diesel has learned that he can’t be a super hero all the time.

We’re all hoping that next years Oscars will be more attended and view by both fans and actors. We also hope that it’s more diverse considering the Oscar’s President Cheryl Boone Isaacs (who happens to be black) has mentioned that the Academy is taking dramatic steps to alter the makeup of our membership. Kevin Hart Fan Gets Suspended After Snapping a Selfie

by

How far is too far to catch a picture of or even a selfie with your favorite celebrity?
Well, one bus driver took her chance to bask in the moment with her favorite comedian and the Kevin Hart fan gets suspended after snapping a selfie while on the clock.
kevinhartselfie
During her rounds for National Rental Cars in Los Angeles, Ganesha Douglas, stopped her bus when she spotted comedian Kevin Hart. Starstruck, Douglas got out and managed to snap a selfie with Hart, apologized to her passengers and went on about her way.
Seems harmless? Well, National Rental Cars was less than thrilled about the actions of the driver and Douglas tells Inside Edition that she’s been “suspended indefinitely, without pay” and her union rep says “she will probably be fired.”
Was the selfie worth it? When asked if she regretted the incident she replied, “Now, I do.”
Hart is known for continuously showing love to his fans on his social media sites and interacting with them and when this story broke he did not shy away in the shadows. Hart took to social media and posted a video asking National Rental Cars to “give [Douglas] a pass” because, in his words, “If I would have seen me, I would have taken a selfie with me too,” and begs them “to have some compassion.”

I'm asking "National Rental Car" to please give Ganesha Douglas a pass. She has learned from her mistake. She nor I intended for this to happen. #LoveMyFans

Whatever happens now is in the hands of the company, but does Douglas deserve to lose her job for the incident or are the repercussions for her actions too harsh?
