How to Rock the Duo-Toned Lip Trend

From burnt reds and burgundies, to browns and purples, to peaches and nudes, the fall 2017 runways featured lips that were bold and lips that were bare. But why just stick to one? Go bold, go nude, go both this fall with duo-toned lips.

Day to Night Lipstick Duo, $5.00, elfcosmetics.com

Go Drastic
This dual-ended lipstick includes a deep shade on one end (perfect for a night out) and a more muted hue on the other (more suited for daytime). Its formula includes shea and vitamins A, C, and E to hydrate lips while also providing a velvet, satin finish. You can also pair both shades for an edgy, fall contrast that’ll make both your top and bottom lips stand out.

How to get the look:
1. Apply the darker “night” shade on your top lip.
2. Apply the lighter “day” shade to your bottom lip.
3. For a high-shine finish, top lips with a clear gloss such as the Sephora Collection Ultra Shine Lip Gel in “Totally Lucid.”

NYX Professional Makeup Ombre Lip Duo, $16.00, nyxcosmetics.ca

Go Ombré
This lip duo offers two coordinating shades to create the perfect ombré look. Each lip duo features a darker-colored, fine-tipped liner to outline and shade, and a lighter-hued satin, matte lipstick to fill in.

How to get the look:
1. Use the fine-tipped liner to outline lips.
2. Continue to use the liner to lightly shade inner corners of lips.
3. Fill in bare areas with the matte lipstick.
4. With a finger or lip brush, gently blend where colors meet.
5. For a glitzy finish, coat lips with a glitter gloss like the Urban Decay Cosmetics Vice Special Effects Long-Lasting Water-Resistant Lip Topcoat in “White Lie.”

Go Duo, Do It Solo
Products that offer 2-in-1 can be both time- and space-savers, but they may not provide the color combinations you desire. Instead, recreate one of these two looks using individual liners and lipsticks.

Color combos to try:
1. Burnt reds and nudes
2. Burgundies and browns
3. Purples and peaches

Lips Like Kylie

We’ve seen it all before: the teenage girls in the Hollywood spotlight go from 13 to 26 practically overnight. But Kylie’s feature transformation tops them all, and she has made injectable lips synonymous with the Kardashian pout. So, what does it take to get Kylie’s look? About a seven hundred dollar payout and a lot of Juvederm. If you want lips like Kylie, it doesn’t come easy—but here’s the treatment in a nutshell.

If Kylie had the typical experience, it would have gone something like this. The lip technician would have put numbing cream on her lips that might have stung a little but would easily numb her mouth. Once her lips were numb, the technician would have asked how big she wanted her lips. Kylie might have had some idea of how big she wanted her lips to look, but if it was her first time getting injectables, she probably wouldn’t know how to quantify that. To give you an idea, half a milliliter of Juvederm would give lips a subtle, but noticeable increase in volume. She must have gotten at least twice that to make her pre-teen lips go to the volume they are at today.

After deciding on the milliliter amount, Kylie would have gotten shots in four places—the left and right side of her upper lip, and the left and right side of her lower right lip—and she would have received several shots in each place. For some, the numbing medication lasts the entire procedure, but for some it can wear off, making it more painful to receive the shots. To counteract the pain, technicians often use ice to help numb the area in addition to the numbing cream. After the procedure, Kylie might have seen some swelling or bruising. Lip volume usually comes down by half within the first day. During the first six hours, patients are cautioned not to talk, eat, or exercise. After three days, the lips take on the shape they will maintain for four to six months.

However, because Kylie is young, her metabolism is faster and her lips probably last closer to four months before diminishing in volume. This means she would have to undergo the procedure a couple times a year. If needles don’t bother you, the cost of maintaining these lips might. If Kylie got the procedure done every four months at a seven-hundred-dollar rate, that would cost somewhere around 2,100 dollars per year. Those are some expensive lips, but the pain to her body and her bank account is assuaged with her adoring 84.2 M Instagram followers and a lip line of her own.

How to Get Picture-Perfect Lips

Let me start off by clearing any rumors about Kylie Jenner undergoing lip augmentation; that is completely false. They are indeed her natural lips. This Jenner is just really talented at using lip liners. I mean, have you checked out her Instagram? At this point, Kylie Jenner knows she has it made. All you have to do is a quick search and you will see that there are a few hashtags dedicated to her lips alone: #kylieslips and #kyliejennerslips. Some of us are dying to know how she does it. Well, if you’re dealing with thin or not so “perfectly” shaped lips like the rest of us, that’s not a problem anymore. Thanks to Jenner, we no longer have to take drastic measurements or leave the comfort of our own home to achieve fuller-looking lips. And the best part is, we won’t ever have to pay for a doctor visit, injections, or augmentations. Instead, let’s take some notes on how to get picture-perfect lips.

Mint Julips Lip Scrub by LUSH

1. Before we even start sculpting our perfect lips, we are going to have to prep them first, and we are going to do that by getting rid of all the dead skin. So, you’ll want to invest in a lip scrub. I recommend using one from LUSH Cosmetics; my favorite one is the Mint Julips Lip Scrub. First, apply the scrub and rub it in a circular motion (make sure not to miss any spots). Once that is done, rinse it off with warm water, and you should end up with a flawless canvas.
2. Next, apply a lip balm of your choice to get your lips nice and moisturized. On top of that, apply a lip concealer; my favorite one to use is Lip Erase by MAC. The point of applying a lip concealer is to “erase” your natural lip outline so you can draw it into a shape you desire.

3. After your lips are nice and concealed, grab your favorite lip liner. I suggest using a nude liner or a color slightly off your original lip color if you want to make your “new lips” look realistic. Now, this is where you are going to get a little creative. At this point, you are ready to outline and shape your lips. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get the shaping right the first time; like most things, it takes a little practice!
4. Finally, you are going to take that same liner and fill in your lips, moving from the center of your lips outward. Once they are filled in, take a small amount of highlighter and swipe it on the center of your bottom lip and on the top, near your Cupid’s bow. The highlighter is what’s going to make your lips look fuller. Lastly, apply a gloss to finish off your look. The only thing left to do is take a selfie!

The Perfect Red Lip

Most women shy away from wearing red, thinking it does not compliment their skin tone. Chances are high that they’ve tried a red that doesn’t match their complexion and decided they will not wear red again, under the belief that no shade of red is for them. Well, ladies, there is a shade of red that is right for you. It’s all about opting for the correct red! First, you need to determine what your undertone is. You do this is by turning your wrists over, so your palms are facing upwards. If you see blue veins, you have a pink undertone, so you have a light complexion. If you green veins, you have a yellow undertone, which means you have an olive/medium complexion. If you have both blue and green veins, then you have both, yellow and pink undertones, which means your complexion is light/medium. Read on for a hopeful little guide to determine the right hues for your skin tone. BY STACEY CAMACHO

Light Skin
If you have a pink undertone to your complexion, then your complexion is considered to be cool. Therefore, deep reds like wine, burgundy, rosewood, cranberry, carmine, and maroon would best suit your skin tone.

Light/Medium Skin
Lucky you—you can wear all hues of red! If you feel like enhancing the cool undertone of your complexion, then opt for a deep red. Otherwise, smear on a true, bright red to show off that warm skin tone of yours.

Medium Skin
I hope you like bright reds, as they are the perfect hue for you! Bright reds such as scarlet, electric crimson, Spanish red, ruby red, and Ferrari red are your match. There is also an option of true red, which would look fabulous on you. True red is a red that has the perfect balance of blue and orange undertones, so it isn’t too bright or too dark and is just right, such as ruby.

Dark Skin
If you have dark skin, then deep reds will be your friend, as will true red lipstick; it totally compliments you. Pair the red lips with clean eye makeup, or with smoky eyes for that ultra-glam look.

The Guide to Beating Dry Skin

It happens every year: as soon as December arrives, we start seeing the effects that winter has on our skin. Luckily, there are lots of products just for dry skin, but where do we start looking? Which moisturizers work the best, and which ones will satisfy our needs? Well, first, we should buy moisturizers designated for certain problem areas, and some of these moisturizers work at relieving itchy skin. Below are some tips to help you combat winter’s frigid side effects. BY JASMINE MOUSTAFA

Moisturizers are not created equal. We cannot just put any moisturizer on our faces because some of them can give us acne or clog up our pores. The first thing to do is to find a moisturizer that is face friendly and will not cause more problems than it is actually solving. One of my favorites that I would suggest to everyone is Aveeno’s Ultra-Calming Daily Moisturizer. It does not contain any oils, and it has been dermatologist-tested, meaning it will not clog pores.

Chapped lips are not a pretty sight, and they are pretty painful. The best lip balm I have ever come across is Blistex’s Lip Medex. It works on severely chapped lips and it contains menthol, which gives your lips that tingly cool feeling.

We use our hands for everything, and because of this, they suffer the most throughout winter. If you want to keep your hands soft and hydrated during the winter, than Euccerin’s Intensive Repair Hand Cream is what you are looking for! What I like about this one is that you do not have to keep applying over and over; one application can last hours.

I have gone through so many body lotions trying to figure out which works the best, and I found one that I just love. It is Gold Bond’s Ultimate Healing Concentrated Skin Therapy cream. It heals and prevents dry skin. I also like that it is fragrance free, so it will not clash with the perfume I’m wearing that day!

Our feet also take a beating every day and the winter does not make it any better. If not treated correctly, severely cracked feet can be very painful. Your best bet is to prevent it or treat it immediately. I like using Burt’s Bees’ Coconut Foot Crème. It smells very good and the coconut oil keeps your feet hydrated!

Lips That Pop

It’s the time of year when everything starts looking a little dull and dark. Why not add a pop of color to your everyday makeup?  Red lipstick is so overly done nowadays. We now have other vibrant colors that you can rock. I’ve conducted some research and made a list of eye catching lip colors.

– Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Lip Color in Electric Orange stays on all day! Who doesn’t love that? Also the color of the lipstick is bold and will not fade. It goes on really smooth, so no need for applying gloss over it. I love it.

– Lancome Rouge in Love Lipstick in Violette Coquette works well with any skin tone. It’s opaque so if you’re not ready for this extreme color stay clear of this one. But for those of you that are ready to rock it, please do so. It’s a great color.

– Mac Viva Glam Nicki is, of course, a very noticeable lip color. It will definitely brighten up a dull day. This lipstick has it all; it’s bright, sparkly and glossy. Sounds perfect if you ask me. Also, if you’re a little fearful of trying out darker colors this lipstick is great.

– Wet ‘n’ Wild Cinnamon Spice lipstick is really great. It’s my go to lipstick, I bought it about three weeks ago and I can’t put it down. It goes on flawless, glossy and it keeps my lips moist. I like it because it is a neutral bold color, so it goes with everything and it makes my lips stand out.

So if you want your lips to make a statement you have other options than using red lipstick. This is awesome because some of us can’t pull red off. I just gave you some ideas to start out with, if you want to experiment with other eye catching colors, go for it.

No-Fuss Summer Lips

The sun is plastered against a clear blue sky, school is out, and your earbuds are blasting your favorite song. Summer time means no worries, and there are only three precious months of it to enjoy before school starts again. Don’t waste time in front of a mirror when you could be on the beach, underwater, or partying. These classic summer lips will help salvage those few extra minutes you need to pack some extra bottles of water into your cooler.

In honor of summer holidays, like Flag Day or Labor Day, fully embrace your red, white, and blue spirit with some fiery red lips. For perfect lines (and so that you don’t have to constantly reapply), fill your lips with liner after lining them to your desired shape. It might feel odd, but this provides lips with extra primer, and if your lipstick does wear off, no one will notice! Try Urban Decay’s 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in “Gash” ($19.00) underneath your red. The creamy liner will cover every spot.
Princess Pink
It’s summer! Grab an umbrella drink, your bikini, tanning oil, and embrace your inner girly-girl. Shades of pink will help increase the effect of tanned skin. Lady Gaga’s Mac Viva Glam is just enough pink to brighten up any look.
Screen Shot 2013-07-22 at 10.27.08 PM
Au Naturale
If it’s too humid for an intense look, and your face is melting before you can even apply concealer, then your best bet is to go natural! I don’t mean skinny dipping, though. Any lip balm will saturate lips, but for a super glossy finish, apply a tiny amount of non-tinted aloe vera to lips. It’s a natural lip gloss that will get you noticed while curing sunburn.
Duck face or prune pout, these basic lips are essential to get you through the rest of summer. So pucker up and get ready to hashtag your favorite looks all summer long.
