Sitting Down With Drax Project, Camila Cabello’s Tour Opener

There must be something in the water in New Zealand. So, it’s a good thing young bands like Drax Project are thirsty for success. The indie-pop quartet only released their first EP, entitled NOON, only dropped last month and the band has already completed a sold out European tour circuit opening up for Camila Capello. Cliché sat down with the band recently to talk origin stories, influences, and fellow New Zealander Lorde. Read the full interview below and stream NOON now.

Could you walk me through how you met and started making music together?

We all met at music school in Wellington. The band started as a busking duo, with Shaan (sax) and Matt (drums) playing instrumental versions of top 40 songs on the streets. Sam joined on bass and we started getting asked to play in small clubs around the city. After doing this for about a year we decided to try and write some of our own music! Ben joined on guitar and the rest is history!

Where does the name ‘Drax Project’ come from?

When we were busking as a duo, people wanted to upload videos of us and were asking for our name so we came up with something quickly. Drums + Sax = Drax. Somehow, it stuck.

What music did you grow up listening to, and how has that affected the music that Drax Project makes?

The 4 of us have grown up playing and listening to totally different music. Shaan started learning jazz from a young age, where as Sam was playing in metal bands all through high school. We all play an equal part in the writing process and feel like our individual tastes make for music that is a little different and unique.

Drax Project is such a young group. How does it feel to be so successful so quickly?

It doesn’t feel like an overnight success or anything because we’ve been a band for a while now and have played a tonne of gigs over the last couple of years. We feel very lucky to be able to do what we do but we’re only scratching the surface right now!

New Zealand hasn’t always been known for creating internationally-known music acts, but this seems to be changing in recent years. Why do you think people are starting to pay more attention to NZ acts?

In this day and age, it doesn’t really matter where you come from because the whole world is super connected. We live in a time where it’s easy to have your music available for the world to hear. Thanks Internet!

When I think New Zealand, I always think Lorde. It’s impossible not to. How have you been influenced by her?

She’s shown that it is possible to make it to the top and that’s pretty inspiring for us. We also were lucky enough to open for her in Auckland last year which was special because we were fans of hers before we were even a band!

What is it like to support Camila Cabello? How did that collaboration come about, and what’s been a highlight so far?

The tour with Camila was amazing! For us to travel to the other side of the world and play these shows has been a dream come true. Especially seeing some people in the audience singing along to our songs! We aren’t 100% sure how it happened but about 6 months ago we recorded an acoustic version of Camila’s song ‘Havana’ just because we loved the song! We have a feeling she saw it and liked it!

There’s so many paths you could go down after this tour is over. What’s next for Drax Project?

Honestly, we just want to write more music and play more shows! Releasing our EP Noon and being involved in this tour has been both inspiring and motivating for us to the point that we just can’t wait to do more!

Summer Music Festival Headliners You Can’t Miss

Summer calls for sunshine, fun times, and awesome music. With a nice taste of some new tunes this spring, summer looks like it’s going to be jam-packed with great music and music festivals alike. Here’s a list of the summer music festival headliners you can’t miss!

With Lorde’s edgy, contemporary sound, people are dying to hear her music live. She’s performing at Free Press Summerfest, Governors Ball, and Outside Lands this year, so obviously she’s a hot topic. She also performed at Coachella last April. Her two new singles “Green Light” and “Liability” are teasers for her new summer album that everyone is super eager to hear. So why not get a sneak peek at these music festivals.

Summer Albums We Can’t Wait For

Summer 2017 is headed our way and so is great new music! There are some exciting new albums coming our way from lots of artists. Whether it’s beautiful lyrics, pop music to hype you up, or songs to add to your poolside playlist, there is something for everyone. Here are the summer albums we can’t wait for!

Melodrama – Lorde
This album is super hyped up and everyone is eager to listen to it. Lorde posted on her Facebook that this album is “about what comes next” and that she is going to “show [us] the new world.” Lorde is known for her hauntingly beautiful sound which will hopefully shine through on this new album.

Kaleidoscope – Coldplay
Since their performance in the 2016 Super Bowl Halftime show, Coldplay has kept very quiet about their new music, but they are officially putting out this new album in the summer! This album will kick off their European tour, which will make its way to North America. Coldplay’s music has always stood out because of their great songwriting skills and we will hopefully see some of that in Kaleidoscope, due out this June.

Hopeless Fountain Kingdom – Halsey
Halsey announced her new album via Twitter with a very subtle tweet: “I Will Be Releasing My Sophomore Album in June 2017” and has said virtually nothing about it since. Halsey is keeping her fans in the dark and will hopefully come out of the blue with an amazing new album. No one really knows what to expect from Halsey, but with a build up like this, we expect it to be a solid new album.

Katy Perry
After her Super Bowl Halftime performance, Perry retreated to her house in California for a break, but she is coming back strong with this new album. She has released two songs on the album, “Chained to the Rhythm” and “Bon Appetit” which are a good sneak peek to her new untitled album. Perry hopes this album will be different in a good way and we’d expect nothing less from Katy Perry!

We have high expectations for these new albums and we hope they don’t disappoint! We could all use some new songs to add to our summer playlists, and we are confident we’ll get some great new additions with this new music!

5 Artists You Should Check Out At Gov Ball

Governors Ball is fast approaching and everyone is getting hyped! This festival in Randall’s Island Park is going to be one of the biggest yet. Artists from all over are getting ready to perform at this music festival and everyone is eager to listen. The three day festival has some great talent performing. Here are 5 artists you should check out at Gov Ball!

Chance the Rapper
The first performance of the entire festival is Chance the Rapper and he is bound to start the show with a bang. This is one of the seven music festivals Chance will be performing at this summer. He’ll hopefully be performing some of his old music to hype up the crowd. Chance is known for putting on a good show so we expect nothing less!

With her new album coming out this summer, Lorde is a very hot topic. Lorde is the second performer on the first day which will get the crowds going for the rest of the festival. With her mesmerizing and different sound, Lorde will surely put on a great show.

Tove Lo
After releasing her hit EP in 2014, Tove Lo is touring and stopping in NYC on June 2nd for Gov Ball. Tove Lo always brings her emotions into her songs which will make for a great performance that will definitely get the fans feeling good and dancing.

Another great performer at Gov Ball is Flume. Flume will join Chance the Rapper and Lorde in performing on the first day, starting the festival out right. Flume’s EDM/electronic type music is bound to hype up the crowd and get everyone on their feet. Skin, Flume’s latest album, was a huge hit and will hopefully be performed with a lot of energy.

Cage the Elephant
Switching gears a bit, another exciting performance will be Cage the Elephant. After their 2015 album, Tell Me I’m Pretty, this American rock band is now touring America and coming to NYC on June 4th to kick off the last day of the festival. Their notorious rock shows will definitely revive the audience and get them going. Cage the Elephant will be a great start to the final day of Govs Ball.

Governors Ball 2017 is packed with awesome performers that will definitely make for a great festival. The crowd will be energized and hyped up for the entire festival with this kind of lineup so we hope everyone is excited to check it out!

Singles That Give Us a Taste of Albums to Come

When it comes to music, artists are always searching for that one song that will become a hit and also gives listeners a taste of what the theme of their album will be until its release. This process usually isn’t perfect – some artists may release four or five singles before the drop if the responses aren’t as expected or instilling fan thoughts of, “This is gonna be a good one!”
But, we’re talking about Lorde & Lana Del Rey in this case. And as of today, I’m expecting growth and a departure from both artists who may provide a memorable first listen.

We “Love” Lana Del Rey

On February 18th, Lana Del Rey released “Love,” from upcoming album Lust for Life. The song opens with a simple hum of a vibraphone, and a bass guitar flowing with Lana’s voice as she pauses for a bit while the drums and the rest of the atmosphere fills our ears with hope. The song speaks for people who don’t seem to care about anything despite any hardships,“It’s enough to make you go crazy, crazy, crazy…” Lana reassures the feelings of love, making simple actions seem so so ordinary, they seem peculiar; getting dressed to go nowhere, clocking in, breathing. So long as you have that person by your side, “Don’t worry baby…”
The title of the song and its overall vibe may fit in line with Lana’s upcoming album. One can only think it’ll be more of a mix of her debut release Born to Die, but less gritty than Ultraviolence. Lana maintains her consistent (lauded as cinematic, even the video is a mini movie with its own poster) sound but with a name and direction reading optimistic and just in time for some cozy feels and warm breezes.

5 Artists You Must See at Coachella

Brace yourselves, Coachella-spam is coming. You know what I mean, where it just so happens all your social feeds will have some kind of mention of the famous annual Indio Coachella Music Festival. Weekend one is fast approaching and excuse me while I mention, this is my first year attending! Whether you’re heading to the festival or heading back home for couch-chella, here are five artists at Coachella you (and I) need to see:

  1. Hans Zimmer

I don’t even think I need an explanation for this. At first, it’s an odd name to even see on the lineup. I can’t even imagine what his set will be like. I’m assuming a whole lot of people in the crowd going, “I KNOW THIS MOVIE!” It’s a nice unconventional addition to the lineup, that’s for sure.

  2. Kendrick Lamar

With his recently released tracks, you KNOW Kendrick is about to put on one hell of a show as he always does. This will be my first time seeing him perform live but from what I see on television and via YouTube, I can’t wait. Here’s to hoping he’ll drop even more new music.
  3. Lorde

Lorde’s been hiding for quite some time. Her album Heroine dropped in 2013 and since then, we’ve only heard a few tracks here and there such as “Yellow Flicker Beat” in Hunger Games. New year, new music for Lorde. With her new songs “Green Light” and “Liability” out now, I’m prepared to cry IRL.

  4. Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s performance during the Super Bowl was pretty epic, to say the least. It was a whole 15-20 minutes (however long it was) of pure singing and medleys with JUST HER. No one else came to join her and I was content. Now I  just need to witness this live.

  5. Majid Jordan

This is more for me to make a mental note but also a way for me to get Majid Jordan’s name out there for everyone to know about. The last few months, I’ve been obsessed with the duo that make up Majid Jordan who give off a JMSN meets The Weeknd vibe.

Read Lorde’s Touching Letter to David Bowie

It has been two days since music and fashion icon David Bowie has passed, and tributes in the form of photos, artwork, and sentiments have been pouring in all over the web. However, it was Lorde’s extremely personal letter (written after shedding tears and gulping down whiskey) about the first time she met Bowie that touched our hearts more than others.
“It feels kind of garish to talk about oneself at a time like this, when the thing that has happened is so distinctly world-sized,” she wrote. “But everything I’ve read or seen since the news has been deeply intrinsic in tone, almost selfish, like therapy.”
Lorde then recounts the night she met him, when she was still new to the scene and adjusting to stardom. After performing at a Vogue benefit honoring Tilda Swinton, Lorde was approached by Anna Wintour, who said that David Bowie wanted to meet her.
“I’ve never met a hero of mine and liked it,” she wrote. “It just sucks, the pressure is too huge, you can’t enjoy it. David was different.”
That night, she wrote, something changed in her. “I felt a calmness grow, a sureness,” she wrote. “I think in those brief moments, he heralded me into my next new life, an old rock and roll alien angel in a perfect grey suit.”

2015 Met Gala

The world’s most talked about celebrities stepped out for fashion’s biggest night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday. The theme this year was “Chinese Whispers: Tales of the East in Art, Film, and Fashion,” so we saw tons of reds, interesting headpieces, and intricate embellishments. From Beyoncé’s sheer Givenchy dress not leaving much to the imagination to Zendaya’s gorgeous Fausto Puglisi mini skirt/train, the 2015 Met Gala was one serious red carpet. How to Get Lorde’s Golden Globes Ponytail

Lorde has stunned on the red carpet before (remember when she wore a pink Vionnet suit to the Rock Hall of Fame induction ceremony in New York City?), so it goes without saying that the 18-year-old singer/songwriter has serious style. Last night at the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, she turned heads in a Narciso Rodriguez custom suit and crop top and Neil Lane jewels, but it was her minimal makeup and uncharacteristically tamed sleek ponytail that tied it all together!
“Lorde’s sleek low ponytail is a classic style that works on the red carpet and in everyday life,” said Redken/Cutler Stylist Jenny Balding of the star’s polished look. “Even if you have long very curly hair [like Lorde’s], you can still achieve this look with a little know how.”
Using Redken products, Balding gives us step-by-step instructions on how to get Lorde’s Golden Globes ponytail.
Lorde2How To: Lorde’s Sleek Pony

  1. Blow dry smooth and straight by using Redken align 12 protective smoothing lotion
  2. Create a deep side part to whichever side suits your face shape best
  3. Sweep into low ponytail at the nape
  4. Use a straightening iron to create a smooth sleek finish
  5. Mist Redken Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist to enhance dull, fine-textured hair for the ultimate sleek finish

A Different Tune to Dance To

In need of a change of pace? Want something that will shake things up? As is the case in most situations, music can be the answer. Here are some artists, both brand new and who have been around the block before, whose new albums will be just the thing you’re looking for.

Lorde – The Love Club (2013)

Born Ella Yelich-O’Connor, the 16-year old New Zealander’s track “Royals” has snuck up onto the pop charts. The undeniably catchy tune combines solid bass and infectious, almost haunting vocals. Reminiscent of Florence + the Machine and Lana del Rey, Lorde’s first single off her album The Love Club takes a jab at mainstream songs today, critiquing fascination with opulence and extravagant displays of wealth. The lyrics, in particular the chorus, read through a list of things that separate Lorde from the lifestyle portrayed by so many musicians, including ‘gold teeth, Grey Goose, tripping in the bathroom/bloodstains, ball gowns, trashing the hotel room.’

Franz Ferdinand – Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action (2013)

The Scottish indie-rock band has returned from a four-year hiatus to release their fourth album, Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action. The new album manages to produce the same sound as the band’s hit “Take Me Out” while offering something intriguing to be discovered for new and old listeners alike. Recently released and just in time to add to your playlist, the single “Right Action” is an upbeat rock tune that perfectly captures the spirit of modern punk revival and indie rock, making it seem as though they picked up right where they left off.

Sara Bareilles – The Blessed Unrest (2013)

A name not unfamiliar to many, Bareilles shows her usual musical style on her latest album The Blessed Unrest. Bareilles offers plenty of soul, heartache, and lessons of love on tracks such as “Manhattan” yet also inspires in her chart-topping single “Brave.” These songs are just some proof that Bareilles can stay true to her upbeat pop and soulful style, and also manage to keep her listeners captivated.
