How to Spend Valentine’s Day at Home

by

With chocolates and sweet treats stocked on the supermarket shelves and red and pink decorations galore, it’s obvious that this could only mean one thing. Valentine’s Day is here! This Sunday is the day of love! Whether you are spending this day with your special valentine, with friends or alone, this year might be much different than the past.

With COVID-19 still very much present, capacity restrictions are in effect for most establishments. Getting reservations just got a lot more difficult. And if that wasn’t the only hindrance, we are currently in the middle of a pretty brisk winter season that will surely put a pause on any outdoor plans. So, if you are choosing to spend the day at home why not make it the best Valentine’s Day yet?

So for all of you lovers or lovers of love, we have your guide to the best and most romantic Valentine’s Day at home!

Self Care

As Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday, it’s the perfect opportunity to get some much needed self-care in! Get your mud masks out and get to work! Masking with your partner is such a fun and sweet way to bond while also taking care of your skin. Check out this amazing mud mask from Fresh! While you’re at it, a hand mask or foot mask might also be a nice treat as well!

Another great self-care activity is a bubble bath! Whether you prefer bath bombs or epsom salts, a relaxing bath is the ultimate way to treat yourself and your partner. Make it romantic with some candles, music and maybe even some rose petals! It’s Valentine’s Day, go all out!

Let’s Paint!

One of the cutest and most popular date ideas are Sip and Paints. It’s where you and your partner or you and some friends take a painting class while also enjoying a few drinks. Unfortunately, many of these places may be closed or under limited capacity but that shouldn’t stop you from the fun!

Bring the Sip and Paint to your home for Valentine’s Day! Pick up some canvases, paint and brushes from your local craft store and follow along to your favorite painting DIY video on Youtube! We love this one by Bob Ross!

If you don’t want to paint all on your own, a great activity is a paint-by-numbers canvas. You can select any picture you like and it will be sent over to you with the mapped-out canvas and the corresponding colors. You can even make it a gift idea, and submit a photograph of your choice to be converted to canvas for you to paint!

Spicy Vodka Sauce Pasta recipe to cook at home!

  • 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 small/medium onion, diced
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp tomato paste
  • ½ cup whole whipping cream
  • ½ tsp salt, or to taste
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ cup shredded parmesan
  • 1 (16oz) box of rotini, boiled + reserve pasta water for later use
  • 1 Tbsp vodka, your choice

  1. Boil pasta according to box directions, or until al dente. Set aside, reserving 1 cup of pasta water for later use.
  2. Prepare all of your ingredients, set aside. Can combine all spices – red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, garlic powder—in one small dish, like a ramekin.
  3. In a large, deep skillet, add olive oil and heat pan to medium/medium-high heat.
  4. Once your pan is hot and sizzling, add diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté until fragrant, about 5-6 minutes. If you like your onions more cooked, sauté until golden brown.
  5. Add tomato paste, butter, vodka and whole whipping cream to the skillet. Mix all ingredients together—the sauce will take on a slightly orange/pink hue, and will be slightly thick.
  6. Heat pasta sauce for about 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, ensuring it doesn’t burn. Lower the heat if it starts to burn, or if the pan gets too hot.
  7. Add in the shredded parmesan cheese, mix until melted and completely combined.
  8. Add reserved pasta water to the skillet to thin out the sauce. Start with ½ cup of water, stirring constantly. Remember: the sauce will need to burn off some liquid, so it will be a little thin to start.
  9. Heat pasta sauce on low-medium for about 5-6 more minutes, stirring frequently, while some of the excess liquid burns off. Lower flame if sauce starts to burn.
  10. Once the sauce is ready, pour half of the rotini into prepared sauce. Store extra pasta.
  11. Plate pasta and add additional parmesan cheese and a pinch of dried or fresh basil on top.

Crack open some champagne or wine and enjoy! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Will a Grand Gesture Keep Couples Together over Another Lockdown?

by

These days we often wonder if a grand gesture will keep couples together over another lockdown? The first lockdown put strain on relationships across the country. In some cases, the pressure made the relationship tighter and stronger than ever; in others, it created a rapid and acrimonious split. If you’re hoping for your relationship to last, then it’s worth taking a look at exactly what’s generating the pressure, and what can be done to deal with it.

Arguments

Keep Couples Together over Another Lockdown

AlemCoksa / Pixabay

A sure sign of bubbling, underlying tension is the frequent row. You resent your better half for emotional reasons that you don’t fully understand, and don’t want to have to articulate. And so instead you vent your frustration by arguing about something trivial.

Arguments, of course, are a common occurrence. In some cases, they’re healthy; it’s better to be vocal about a problem than to suffer in silence about something that could easily be fixed. According to a recent study, three quarters of British couples have at least one major argument a week. The average across everyone polled was three fallout’s ever week. For some couples, the frequency of these shouting matches was persuading them that they actually don’t enjoy spending time together.

What Prompts Arguments?

The study identified a range of triggers behind an argument. Many of these concerns the division of labor when it comes to household chores. Tidying the house was a sore point for 37% of couples; cleaning the house came in at 29%; cooking, laundry and washing up came in at 17%, 13% and 17% respectively.

What sorts of Couples Cope?

Keep Couples Together over Another Lockdown

AnnaliseArt / Pixabay

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the length of the relationship has a big influence on the frequency and intensity of arguments. Couples in the first month of the relationship tended not to argue at all – but this honeymoon period is short-lived. After a month, the novelty wears off, and five arguments a week is common. The frequency of arguments tends to diminish the longer you’ve been together; while couples who’ve been together for a month might have five arguments a week, those who’ve been together for a year tend to have just one. The only exception is the 5-10 year bracket, where there’s a marked uptick in argumentativeness. This might support the theory of the infamous seven-year itch.

What Measures can Couples take?

The couples who coped most capably with lockdown were those who successfully adapted to each others routines, and who managed to avoid stepping on each others feet. Setting out a schedule in writing is a good way to make this happen.

Another necessity is to find time to do something novel together. Whether it’s a co-operative video game or the couch-to-5k program, having time allotted where you’re going to have a positive experience with your other half will help to cement their status as a good thing in your life.

Finally, there’s something to be said for acknowledging the pressure of the situation. You may decide to opt out of the traditional anniversary gifts and instead present your other half with something small regularly when you’re getting on well during lockdown. A little humor (and a little retail therapy) is, after all, a natural de-stressing agent. Grand gestures certainly help – but it’s the smaller ones that’ll get you through to the other side of lockdown.

Finding Love in the 21st Century

by

Finding love in the 21st century can be challenging. While your friends may be settling down and thinking of having kids, you might feel left on the shelf. There’s nothing worse than feeling like the third wheel when heading out with your pals or being the only person without a plus one at a wedding. While you might be eager to find love, you probably don’t know how to go about it. Read on to find out how to maximize your success in the dating game.

Relax

Finding Love

jump1987 / Pixabay

The first thing you need to do is relax. Putting too much pressure on yourself to find love can ruin every date that you go on. You might be overthinking everything you say, everything your date says, every verbal cue and every mannerism they have. By being so focused on the nitty-gritty details you won’t have the ability to get to know any potential partners.

Consider heading online and signing up to a dating app. These apps are way more intuitive than they ever have been before. They will look at your dating history, your likes and dislikes, and most importantly, your motivations. Some dating apps are for mere hook-ups, but others focus on finding real-life partners. Some are global and will search worldwide for a partner. You could find your soulmate halfway across the globe, meaning that you may end up needing a fiance visa to get married and settle in the country of your choice.

Take Things Slowly

When you are looking for love, you might be keen to go a hundred miles an hour when it comes to dating. You aren’t getting any younger so you want to have the marriage conversation on the second date and the kids’ conversation on the fifth. This desperation is not an attractive quality and could lead to your potential soul mate running a mile.

Finding Love

yaulink4u / Pixabay

Instead, take things a lot slower. It’s ok to get to know someone over a few months and move in with them when you’re ready. Living together is a massive step and a huge sign of commitment. You are letting go of your dating life to give a full-blown relationship a go. Don’t just settle for someone who takes an interest and wait for that individual who truly deserves you.

Drop The Baggage

If you have been cheated on in the past or you have had some pretty messy breakups, it can be hard not to take this baggage into your next relationship. You need to be open and trusting. A partner who has nothing to do with your cheating ex won’t appreciate your constant need to check their phone. This smothering behavior will not result in lasting love. You need to drop the baggage that you have and leave it outside the relationship. Being open and vulnerable can be challenging but it is necessary to let someone get to know the real you. If they want to stick around, you know that you are onto a good thing.

If you are still looking for love, enjoy the dating process and enjoy being on your own and getting to know what you want in life. Only then will you be ready for Cupid’s arrow.

Meet Arlyne and Weston: The YouTube Couple Spreading Good Vibes

by

It’s no secret that YouTube is oversaturated with couples attempting to leave a lasting impression on their audiences with their cutesy love or their ability to prank each other good. However, there is one couple that is doing it right. Meet Arlyne and Weston Bales of Orange County, California. The couple has been married for three years now and together for seven. Just last year, they decided to begin regularly posting videos of them together as a unit on YouTube, although Arlyne has had her own separate beauty and fashion channel for almost eight years. She’s a smart, creative fashionista, while he’s amazingly over-the-top (in a good way of course).

What makes Arlyne and Weston stand out? It’s because, with them, what you see is what you get. In the couple’s words, who they are on-camera is who they are off-camera. They are fun, genuine, authentic, and of course, adorable together! Their main mission is to create and spread good vibes to their audience with each video. In fact, they have named their fanbase “Vibers”. Are you having a bad day? You can count on Arlyne and Weston to cheer you up. If you’re looking for the true definition of “couple goals”, look no further than these two.

A recurring theme in their YouTube videos is Arlyne – who is of Mexican and Bolivian descent – teaching Spanish to Weston, who is only a quarter Mexican, but does not speak Spanish at all. In two separate videos, Arlyne goes an entire day speaking only Spanish to Weston, while he tries his best to respond appropriately in the same language. However, as expected, the result is him speaking Spanglish. In one of these videos, the couple spontaneously takes a road trip across the border to Mexico and spend the day shopping and eating authentic Mexican food. The amazing thing is that with each time they upload these videos, Weston’s Spanish appears to be improving.

Often times, the couple decides to prank each other. However, when it comes to these two, their pranks are not gratuitously over the top, as is the case with many other YouTube couples that famously prank each other. With Arlyne and Weston, it’s the perfect balance of “pushing the limit” but not to the point where Weston will be forced to sleep on the couch for the night.

Weston has no problem being the “guinea pig” in their YouTube videos. Aside from Arlyne teaching him Spanish, Weston can also be seen eating foods that he’s never tried before, mostly Mexican and other foods of Latin origins. More often than not, Weston does not enjoy the food, as he is known to be a picky eater. Because of this, Arlyne has continuously and lovingly referred to him as “Guerito Dramatico”, a slang term that translates to “Dramatic White Boy/Man”. It’s a description that Weston wears with great pride!

The Best On and Off-Screen Kisses for International Kissing Day

by

In case you haven’t already heard, today is international kissing day. That’s right, there is a day dedicated to celebrating kissing. A quick Google search will yield several articles about this common show of affection and why it is significant. This international recognition began in 2006 and since then, people take July 6th to appreciate their significant other, their children, and their family with the simple, but meaningful gesture. Whether you’re appreciating a loved one or the mere connection that we all share as human beings, it’s important to remember that we all need a little love in our lives. To celebrate today, let’s take a look at some of the best on and off-screen kisses.

International Kissing Day: Some of the Best On-Screen Kisses

Alfred Hitchcock’s “Notorious”

This one is for the film buffs out there who know their classic cinema. Or for those of you who don’t, here’s why this scene is so effective. The famous director, Alfred Hitchcock, found a way around the 1940s film Production Code’s ban on lengthy kisses. At the time, on-screen kisses weren’t supposed to last longer than three seconds. Hitchcock cleverly bent the rules by creating a two-and-a-half-minute kissing scene. Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman didn’t actually break that three-second lip-lock. Instead, they kissed for three seconds, took breaks to deliver lines, and then began kissing again. It was utterly genius and seamlessly executed. If you haven’t seen this kissing scene, you may be underestimating the power of the on-screen kiss.

Victor Fleming’s “Gone with the Wind”

Again, it’s another classic, but come on, who can deny the chemistry between Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler? The film, based on Margaret Mitchell’s novel of the same name, is set in the backdrop of the American Civil War. O’Hara and Butler are perhaps one of the most notoriously tumultuous couples to ever grace the silver screen.

“Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” Han and Leia’s Kiss

This kiss is pretty epic and it’s not just because it’s from a Star Wars film. The chemistry between Han and Leia is something that we all feel, thanks to Harrison Ford and the late Carrie Fisher’s portrayals. Han and Leia are a perfectly relatable couple and that’s what makes the payoff so great.

Everyone has seen this photograph. Celebrating the end of WWII, the sailor was captured mid-kiss with a nurse. All thanks to a well-timed photographer and incredibly high emotions, this photograph is probably one of the most reenacted poses for modern-day couples photos.

This vibrant display of lovers in an intertwined kiss was created by the famed Austrian painter Gustav Klimt in 1907-1908. If you’ve ever in Vienna, Austria, stop by the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere museum to catch a glimpse of this painting in person.

Don’t forget to appreciate someone with a kiss today!

Singles That Give Us a Taste of Albums to Come

by

When it comes to music, artists are always searching for that one song that will become a hit and also gives listeners a taste of what the theme of their album will be until its release. This process usually isn’t perfect – some artists may release four or five singles before the drop if the responses aren’t as expected or instilling fan thoughts of, “This is gonna be a good one!”
But, we’re talking about Lorde & Lana Del Rey in this case. And as of today, I’m expecting growth and a departure from both artists who may provide a memorable first listen.

We “Love” Lana Del Rey

On February 18th, Lana Del Rey released “Love,” from upcoming album Lust for Life. The song opens with a simple hum of a vibraphone, and a bass guitar flowing with Lana’s voice as she pauses for a bit while the drums and the rest of the atmosphere fills our ears with hope. The song speaks for people who don’t seem to care about anything despite any hardships,“It’s enough to make you go crazy, crazy, crazy…” Lana reassures the feelings of love, making simple actions seem so so ordinary, they seem peculiar; getting dressed to go nowhere, clocking in, breathing. So long as you have that person by your side, “Don’t worry baby…”
The title of the song and its overall vibe may fit in line with Lana’s upcoming album. One can only think it’ll be more of a mix of her debut release Born to Die, but less gritty than Ultraviolence. Lana maintains her consistent (lauded as cinematic, even the video is a mini movie with its own poster) sound but with a name and direction reading optimistic and just in time for some cozy feels and warm breezes.

Jenny’s Wedding Trailer Release

by

For all our fellow Americans out there, and essentially to everyone worldwide, June 26, 2015 will forever mark a historical day in the name of not just gay, but human rights. June 26th was when the Supreme Court ruled that everyone, gay, straight, human, were allowed to marry in the United States of America. It truly was a remarkable day to be an Amercan, and on the heels of Pride Week as well. Impeccable timeing to say the least.
Another greatly timed release in IFC’s newest move Jenny’s Wedding, headlined by the great Katherine Hiegel and Gilmore Girl’s Alexis Bledel.

A trailer was recently released which shows Hiegel’s character Jenny, coming out to her parents and sharing the news about her upcoming wedding to her “roommate” Kitty. In shock, and still quite behind in their times, the parents are in disbelief. The trailer pans over several scenes that includes Hiegel in her wedding dress, stunning, glowing and filled with love.

This film is greatly timed in its release (July 31st) and looks to be a tearjerker, with greatly timed breaks. It seems that equality is on the rise for everyone across the board, including representation in media. It’s slowly and surely becoming more acceptable to be “out.” Youtube stars, athletes and overall star figures alike are speaking out and coming out with what seems little worry or ease at being conventionally accepted by their peers and those who enjoy their work. This film continues to prove that America is becoming more open minded and accepting, and times are surely changing. Check out the trailer below!

Fifty Shades of Grey Movie Review

by

Contracts, whips and chains, oh my!
Okay, ladies (and gents) Valentine’s Day weekend is here and so is Cliché Mag’s Fifty Shades of Grey movie review!
Audiences are flooding their local movie theaters this weekend with their friends, significant others and some even solo to see the film that’s been heating up movie screens, but is it worth it? Well…some things you’ll love, some things you’ll hate and others will make you go WTF.
First things first, the movie is based on the first book in British author E. L. James’ erotic trilogy, which began as Twilight fan fiction and stars Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele, a sexually inexperienced college student and Jamie Dornan as Christen Grey , the handsome, charming, BDSM-obsessed young billionaire. The two unexpectedly fall for each other, but Steele wants a love story and fairytale romance while Grey admits that he wants her, but on his own terms.
rs_1024x434-140724091809-1024-5.50-shades-of-grey-72414
Let’s break things down. If you were expecting to see heart racing erotica, steamy sex scenes in the “Red Room of Pain” or anything that was too hot for TV in order to pick up a tip or two- you’d be disappointed. It’s not to say the film lacked these things, but let’s just say the build up was better than the actual climax.
Now, if you’re one of those people who knew all along that the film was going to be a bust, you’re not entirely correct, but you have a point. The lovers of the Fifty Shades book series would encourage those to read the book and just skip on the movie, but we must remember that only so much can be translated from book to big screen, so bare with it and keep an open mind.
Some things you’ll love about the movie: the sexual chemistry between Steele and Grey, although their regular interaction was a bit awkward and reminiscent of the relationship between Bella and Edward from the Twilight movies. The two did an amazing job capturing the lust, sensuality and dominance of their relationship, while also staying true to the real life situations people encounter while dating (i.e. drunk phone calls and jealousy).

Some things you’ll hate: the contract, the contract, the contract! The constant talk about the contract, which became irrelevant as time went on. Also, the ending. Compare it to a bad sexual encounter, just when things start to get good, they finish first and just leave you hanging. Completely unsatisfied. Now, you have to wait for the next time around or in this case for the next movie.
Overall, did Fifty Shades of Grey live up to the hype? Not exactly. Was it enjoyable? Yes. It kept audiences interested and might have sparked some sexual fantasies, but it also triggered many side conversations about book comparisons, inconsistencies and more laughs and funny lines than expected.
For the first installment, the movie was OK, but the real verdict is how the trilogy will do as a whole in the future.
