Your Perfect Memorial Day Playlist

Memorial Day is here and hopefully you have some fun plans to celebrate the unofficial start of summer! Whether you’re chilling at the beach or relaxing at a backyard barbecue, you’ll need the right sounds to make the day complete. But don’t worry, you won’t need to scramble this year to put together the perfect playlist. We’ve done it for you. Here’s your perfect Memorial Day playlist.
Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) – Looking Glass
We’re starting off with a classic ’70s track to ease us into things. This should put everyone in a good mood and ready to enjoy themselves and the day.
Sunny Afternoon – The Kinks
Speaking of the day, the title of this track should hopefully be referring to the weather wherever you are. It’s also another nice easygoing song to get us started.
Get Lucky – Daft Punk
Don’t worry, we weren’t going to stay in the ’70s the whole time. This funky hit will keep the good times rolling.

Fantasy – Mariah Carey
Now we jump back to the ’90s for some pop grooves from Mariah.
Lovely Day – Bill Withers
Bill Withers comes on to tell us again that this hopefully is a great day with amazing weather.
Lovefool – The Cardigans
Back to the ’90s. Back to some great pop grooves.
Don’t Worry Baby – The Beach Boys
How could you start the summer off and not have the Beach Boys make an appearance on your playlist? Here we slow things down just a bit, but the harmonies in this song won’t have you minding much.
I Feel It Coming – The Weeknd
Keeping things soft and slow, but bringing back the grooves.

This Girl – Kungs vs. Cookin’ on 3 Burners
Picking the tempo back up with this track.
I Was Made To Love Her – Stevie Wonder
We couldn’t leave Stevie off the playlist. Who wouldn’t want to hear his sweet voice on a nice, sunny day? We went with one of his most soulful songs.
Escape (The Pina Colada Song) – Rupert Holmes
This starts a three song suite that I refer to as the “what you’re probably drinking” set. Sing along with the chorus since I know you know it.
Passionfruit – Drake
The master of moody music is up next with a track that brings us back to a similar groove that’s been flowing through most of this list.
Pine & Ginger – Amindi K. Fro$t & Valleyz
This song keeps a similar feeling going from the previous track.
Champion – Kanye West
Picking things back up with some classic Kanye.
Blame It On The Boogie – The Jacksons
Some people might be questioning not going with a Michael Jackson song here instead of one when he was still with his brothers, but trust me, give this a chance. A supremely fun song.

Slide – Calvin Harris
It might sound at first like a huge tonal shift, but once the beat kicks in, this works to keep our groove going.
You Make My Dreams – Hall & Oates
The hardest decision might have been which Hall & Oates song to put on this list. Of course they were always going to be on it. We went with this because it brings back some of the fun that the last song might’ve dampened.
Treasure – Bruno Mars
Yes, he’s had some great songs out more recently, but again this song is just fun. And personally, it has the best groove of them all, which this playlist is striving for.
California Gurls – Katy Perry
Well, if we’re going classic Kanye and classic Bruno Mars, might as well go classic Katy Perry. Keeping the fun going.
Shape of You – Ed Sheeran
We keep the groove going for our last song while we start to wind things down.

The Best Pieces for Memorial Day

Smells of charcoal and hamburgers waft through the air, the weather is hot and humid, and kids run around neighborhoods freely on a Monday afternoon. All of this can only mean one thing—it’s Memorial Day. Whether you’re spending the day poolside with your gal pals or wading through a swarm of kids at your neighbor’s BBQ bash, the national holiday is a chance to set the bar for your summer wardrobe. With these unique BBQ ready pieces, you’re sure to be the talk of the grill out.

Nothing says summer like a halter dress, but this fun frock screams beach days and Sunday strolls. Simple, yet structured enough to be elegant, this textured dress embodies everything we love about summer trends. The bright colors keep it fun, but the fringe and global pattern will identify you as the trendsetter of the group.

Is it really a Memorial Day BBQ if there aren’t flip-flops galore? This year, stand out from the crowd and pick a pair of strappy sandals instead. This trend hit the runways hard this year, with designers like Jason Wu and Saint Laurent showcasing their take on the lace-up and ankle-strap shoe. If you’re really trying to make a statement, go big or go home with an offbeat color. These sandals in rose gold are sure to have all of your girlfriends oohing and ahhing.

The most important Memorial Day piece, however, is, of course, your fabulous bag. Lucky for you, oversized bags are all the rage this season, so you can bring your dish to the potluck in style. Tote bags won’t cut it this year; instead, invest in a fashion-forward floral print handbag. Perfect for a garden party or neighborhood grill-out, this Kate Spade tote shouldn’t leave your side all summer long.
No matter your Memorial Day plans, show up in style and embrace your favorite summer trends!

Best Ways to Celebrate Memorial Day

Typically, Memorial Day consists of breaking out the grill and having pool parties with family and friends. This is all great, but often we tend to forget the real reason for this holiday. Memorial Day is intended to be patriotic, honoring those who serve or have served our country in the military. There’s plenty of ways to party while still honoring the men and women in our armed forces! Here are some patriotic ways to celebrate Memorial Day.

Parades are a great way to celebrate Memorial Day. They’re fun, you can bring your family and friends, and they have a patriotic focus. Some of the Memorial Day Parades happening in cities across the U.S. are listed below.
NYC: The biggest Memorial Day Parade is starting at 1 pm on Grand Ave. at 77nd St. in Queens on Sunday.
The 149 year old Brooklyn parade starts in Bay Ridge at 101 St. and 4th Ave at 10 a.m.
Manhattan’s Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Day Observance takes place at Riverside Dr. and 89th Street at 10am.
LA: The biggest Memorial Day parade starts in Chatsworth at the Valley Relics Museum a on May 25, 2016 from 6pm to 8pm. This parade is followed up on May 27th from 9am to 10am for a ceremony. On May 30th, there will be a great Memorial Day celebration at Sherman Way and Remmet Avenue, and also at Owensmouth Ave.
Miami: There will be a great Memorial Day Parade/Celebration starting in Triangle Park. The Miami Springs Senior High School’s J.R.O.T.C will present the Colors in honor of the fallen soldiers. The celebration starts at 10 a.m.

Read a Classic War Story
There are so many incredible and heartbreaking books about war. Take the time to relax over this long weekend and give yourself a perspective on what our military goes through. Some classic books to check out are The Things They Carried, The Outpost, The Longest Day, and A Rumor of War.

Watch a Classic War Film
If a movie is maybe more appealing than reading a book for you, try checking out some of these classic war films. They bring the horror, and bravery, of war to life in a way that can sometimes make you feel as though you’re actually there. I recommend Saving Private Ryan; Good Morning, Vietnam; Schindler’s List; and Full Metal Jacket.
Enjoy yourself this Memorial Day weekend, but remember the reason for the celebration!

Modern Day Beauty Look For Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend is a wonderful time to catch up with loved ones and unwind, but who says your beauty routine has to be mundane? We’re going to show you how you can switch it up by sharing a modern day beauty look for Memorial Day that will give a little twist to your typical patriotic flair. So, here’s to a weekend in honor of our men and women serving in the armed forces, and here’s to celebrating in a fashion-forward style.

Pick Your Poison: Coral Lips or Coral Nails

Optimized-NARS Casablanca Nordstrom

Yes, you read that correctly. It’s not a part of your average red, white, and blue beauty look, but who makes the rules? A twist from your good ole classic red lip, a coral pout is exactly what you need to feel spontaneous and authentic while still incorporating a patriotic spirit that’s not so blatant. If it’s a color you’ve been hesitant to try before, go for it! Though the color might look scary in the tube, you may find a smile peeking through your lips when you try it on, as coral creates a natural warmth and liveliness to your skin tone, eyes, and face while creating an overall look that’s flattering and eye-catching. A few of our favorites include Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lip Color in Craving Coral, retailing for $7.99 at ULTA, and NARS lipstick in Casablanca, retailing for $27 at Nordstrom. If coral lips are too much, try it on your nails. Check out Essie’s Color Binge ($8.50), OPI’s Are We There Yet? ($9.99), or ZOYA’s Heidi ($10).
White Eyeliner

To go with your stunning coral lips, we encourage you to take out your white eyeliner that you keep for good measure, but probably find yourself wondering: why is it that I need to have this in my makeup collection again? Though white eyeliner may not be used as frequently or be as popular as nude eyeliner nowadays, white eyeliner is perfect for this type of occasion. It will still manage the trick of creating a more wide-eyed and brighter look for your face, yet it’ll also go beautifully and naturally with your coral lips. Before you know it, you’ll be the fashionista on the rise. Check out the latest such as Make Up Forever’s metallic to matte finishes in their Aqua XL Extra Long Lasting Waterproof Eye Pencil in Matte White, retailing for $21.00, or the classics like NYX’s Jumbo Pencil in Milk, retailing for $4.50, to complete your Memorial Day look this weekend.

Let’s Celebrate Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a time to remind ourselves of the meaning of sacrifice and to put personal struggles and difficulties in perspective. Our brave troops sacrifice their lives everyday in the line of battle defending our country, and deserve plenty of respect. Across the nation, citizens were marking Memorial Day with somber ceremonies, flag planting at cemeteries, parades and even barbecues, which is an American past time that will never go out of style.
President Barack Obama, made a surprise visit to Afghanistan for Memorial Day. Obama arrived at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan to speak with troops and visit soldiers being treated at a base hospital. Obama directed all government agencies in the United States to fly their flags at half-staff on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
At least 2,181 members of the U.S. military have died during the nearly 13-year Afghan war and thousands more have been wounded. (Huffington Post)
It is devastating to know the harsh realities of the brutal war that has been taking place for so long in Afghanistan. This statistic alone proves how selfless men and women who enlist in the armed services are, and it makes me very grateful to them. Whether you were at the beach today, firing up the grill with your family, or taking advantage of that great Memorial Day sale, I hope you all took a moment to reflect on the true meaning of this influential holiday.
Let’s celebrate Memorial Day by supporting our amazing troops, and being thankful for the safety and security they provide to us.
