The Best Skincare Routine for Colder Weather

The winter solstice marks one of the happiest times of year for most: cookie making, decorating, and the togetherness of friends and family. For others, it’s around this time that skin becomes cracked, flaky, and irritated. Between frigid outdoor air and dry indoor heat, our skin constantly struggles to maintain moisture. Oils, creams, and serums make hydration possible, but not all formulas pair well with every skin type, and there’s a method to applying those that do relieve the harsh effects of winter. This year, let us guide you through the climate change to radiant skin following these product recommendations and moisturizing tricks.

Swap Cleansers
If you begin your mornings with cleanser, opt for a formula that’s creamy. Unlike most foaming cleansers that are light and best for the summer, creamy cleansers include ingredients that deeply moisturize without the use of heavy butters. The Shiseido Benefiance Extra Creamy Cleansing Foam contains bio-hyaluronic acid, a moisture surge component that gently removes impurities and plumps skin. Despite its rich texture, it still foams to pair well with your Clarisonic or other face cleansing aid.

Moisturize with SPF
If your skincare routine consists solely of moisturizer, switch to an ultra-hydrating lotion with SPF. Although it may not feel like it, the sun can still damage your skin during the winter months, so you want to use products that offer broad-spectrum protection. We like MDSolarSciences Daily Anti-Aging Moisturizer with SPF 30. Its lightweight, non-comedogenic formula offers all-day hydration without leaving you feeling greasy, ideal for those with acne-prone skin. The ingredient niacinamide promotes an even skin tone, while a combination of antioxidants vitamin C, grape, rosemary, green tea extracts, and rose hips minimize fines lines and wrinkles and protects against free-radical damage.

Exchange Petroleum for Oil
For those of you who love to use Vaseline and other petroleum-based products throughout the day in the winter, you may want to rethink your choices. Ingredients like mineral oil, petrolatum, and paraffin clog pores, which may cause skin to flare up. Instead, stick to lip balms and moisturizers that nourish and hydrate skin with essential oils like sunflower seed and hemp seed oils. We like the Burt’s Bees Ultra Conditioning Lip Balm with Kokum Butter and the Hempz Triple Moisture Herbal Body Crème.

Exfoliate Chemically
Exfoliating is crucial, especially during winter months when your skin may appear dull and flaky. During this time, it’s best to avoid mechanical exfoliants that often include grains of sugar, walnut shells, or coffee that could cause microscopic tears and further irritate skin. Instead, opt for milder chemical exfoliants that use small percentages of alpha-hydroxy and beta-hydroxy acids to gently remove dead cells. For best results, use chemical exfoliants consistently. Two to three times a week, use the European Wax Center Reveal Me Face Exfoliating Gel and Reveal Me Exfoliating Body Gel, both formulated with skin-loving ingredients to achieve velvet smooth results.

Nourish in the Tub
Hot baths and showers may keep you warm throughout cold climate, but they also contribute to skin that’s dry and itchy. Stick to water that’s lukewarm and a soap bar or wash with a nourishing formula. We like the Indigo Wild Zum Bar in “Tea Tree-Citrus.” A combination of tea tree, eucalyptus, and sweet orange deter blemishes and hydrate skin.

Cream-up After You Shower
After your bath or shower, it’s vital to pat yourself dry and follow with a rich moisturizer like the Ahava Dermud Nourishing Body Cream while your pores are still opened. The powerful ingredient Dead Sea mud quickly heals and vanishes all signs of irritation, leaving skin feeling as silky as the cream itself.

Hydrate Before Bed
If your daily moisturizer isn’t enough, try a nourishing facemask like the Montagne Jeunesse Creamy Coconut Masque once or twice a week before bedtime. Shea butter makes this formula ideal for dry-to-normal skin types.

5 Ultra-light Face Masks You Have to Try

Increasing time spent outdoors helps you achieve the bronzed glow you’ve yearned for all winter. However, the excessive sun exposure can leave skin looking and feeling dehydrated, irritated, and aged. Reverse signs of sun damage with these five ultra-light, replenishing face masks.

  1. Intense Hydration, $14.19, target.com

This intense hydration mask provides all the moisture your skin needs after a day under the sun without the use of heavy, pore-clogging ingredients. The secret? Burt’s Bees uses botanical clary sage to regulate the skin’s natural oil production, which makes this mask ideal for all skin types. Use this twice a week in combination with your skincare routine, or in place of your anti-aging serum; its natural ingredients reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Why Your Hair Products Should Include SPF

You’ve probably heard about the damage the sun can cause to your skin, but you’ve probably never considered the damage it could do to your hair—and it doesn’t stop there. In addition to harmful UV rays, salt water and chlorine contribute to the many reasons why hair might look faded or feel dry and brittle in the summertime. Not to worry: Like makeup, hair care products now provide UV protection so that locks maintain hydration and vibrancy throughout the season. Don’t dive in the pool, jump into the ocean, or even leave the house without first coating your strands with one of these SPF-infused hair products!

Protect your hair color and mane with the Paul Mitchell Color Care Color Protect Locking Spray. This lightweight mist adds impeccable shine while offering UVA/UVB protection. A mixture of moisturizing jojoba and rosemary leaf extracts hydrate and condition, making this a perfect fit for those of you prone to pesky flyaways.

Ditch the frizz with TIGI Bed Head Beach Bound Protection Spray for Colour Hair.  A combination of sunflower seed oil, grapefruit extract, and UV protectant nourish strands and prevent color-treated hair from fading. Heat and humidity resistant, this spray is perfect for outdoor adventures.

Since we love two-in-one products, the Clarins Sunscreen Care Oil Spray Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is a must-have hair and skin protectant dry oil. This non-greasy, sweat- and water-resistant formula shields against sun, salt water, and chlorine damage with gold cob, sycamore, and aloe extracts. Use this spray on your skin to promote an evened tan for those of you who seek a little color, or try it in your hair to rehydrate with organic nyamplung oil. This product is dermatology-tested and free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates.

5 Acne Solutions to Treat Sensitive Skin

If your acne-prone skin is anything like mine—sensitive—then a variety of over-the-counter treatments (or even prescriptions) can be way too harsh. Dermatologists have recommended face washes, creams, and gels, and I’ve tried them all. But each one led to irritation, and nothing is appealing about skin that’s dry, itchy, and inflamed.

It’s common for solutions to warn against the dangers of sun exposure, further subjecting already-sensitive skin to sunburn and flakiness. Sure, lotions can be used to rehydrate, and foundations and concealers can mask redness and blemishes, but a combination of these products often only lead to more breakouts.

Tired of my skin being anything but flawless after using a plethora of products, I took it upon myself to do a little experimentation of my own. Over the past few years, I came across treatments that not only rapidly reduce and diminish imperfections, but also a few that conceal and eliminate altogether.

Ladies, it’s time you treat your sensitive, acne-prone skin right with these five must-haves.

 1. Murad Rapid Relief Acne Spot Treatment, $22, ulta.com
In June, Murad launched its Rapid Relief Acne Spot Treatment that uses maximum strength salicylic acid to reduce blemish size in as little as four hours. Thyme and pine extracts maintain skin’s natural balance, and horse chestnut and oat extracts reduce redness while soothing skin. Just dab a little of this clear, fast-acting gel on problem areas and say goodbye to breakouts and irritation.

Formulated with cupuacu butter, an Amazonian super fruit packed with nutrients to nourish your lips, acai, and coconut oil, it’s made to sooth and condition lips through the summer heat. Hector Simancas, Pro Makeup Artist and dear friend of the brand, raves that the lip butter can also be used as an eye topper, highlighter, and base prior to applying a liquid lipstick. Talk about a product that can transition into more!

The Most Iconic Grease Moments to Capture on Canvas or Frame

Grease is an iconic film that depicts American teenagers in the 1950s, and it’s by far one of the most famous and loved musicals. Grease fans—and those who have never known the joys of watching this beloved musical—recently got to indulge in a television special Grease: Live. Audiences were treated to relive their favorite musical with a one-night live performance featuring a modern cast. There are so many iconic moments in this musical, so why not choose one of your favorite moments or characters, upload it, and keep the film alive on a canvas or frame? Here are some iconic moments that you could choose from.
Opening Credits
The first iconic moment in Grease is of course the animated opening credits this depicts and creates nostalgia from 1950’s America. Any one of the animations could be uploaded and printed photos to canvas, but if you’re a true Grease fan, the best one would be the blue car with “grease” written on it, which was also featured on some movie posters.
Classic Greasers
The T-Bird group represents Greasers, which was a popular type of group in 1950’s America. Any one of the T-Birds could be framed individually, but Danny and Kenickie are probably most popular. Or if you can’t choose between just one, why not get a canvas made with all the T-birds together as a group with their famous jackets? The best choice would be with them on the bleachers, right after they’ve belted out the number they sing alongside the Pink Ladies.

Pink Ladies
Each Pink Lady has a different style, but they are all connected with their iconic pink jacket. Grease lovers who are looking to add a pop of color to their wall should have a canvas made with all of the Pink Ladies wearing their famous pink jackets.
The Drive-In
All of the teens at Rydell High collectively group at the movie drive-in at weekends, and a classic moment that would look like an amazing piece of art hung on your wall is of course a shot of Danny and Sandy in Dann’s banged up car.
Dancing Fever
The high school dance that takes place in Rydell High, as any Grease fan will know, is imperative to the film. There are lots of shots of Danny and Sandy dancing, which would look amazing in color or black and white framed and placed on your wall.

The End
The ending to Grease is the most iconic moment you want captured on a canvas or frame. There are many best moments you have to choose from. The first, which is also the movie’s poster, would be Sandy dressed up in black with her new perm hugging Danny. Another is the T-Birds and all the Pink Ladies together as a group. These moments can be in black and white or color, but it’s probably best to get one of the end shots in color to really appreciate the different colors the carnival offers. The last moment, which comes right at the end, would be Danny and Sandy going off together in a flying car.

Beauty Crushes

Beauty brands are notorious for launching new products each and every month. Amongst the hundreds of liners, lippies, blushes, bronzers, and other cosmetics, there are a few that have captured my beauty heart. Here are a few fabulous products of the moment that I have been crushing on and using like no tomorrow. Trust me, once you try these beauty babies out, you won’t want to put them down either. Holy grail purchases? I totally believe so! Check out our beauty crushes below!

(Beautyblender $19.95, www.sephora.com)

Blend It Out
It’s true that the Beautyblender has been in my beauty collection for quite some time now, as with many other beauty junkies out there. As of late, though, I have been using it non-stop—more than any of my other beauty tools at my reach. I love applying BB cream and blending out cream blush (and even bronzer) softly onto my skin with the Beautyblender slightly wet. It easily helps any product melt into my skin and appear as organic as possible.

Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Defense SPF 30
(Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Defense SPF 30, $38, www.sephora.com)

Elephant Love
Okay, I must admit that what drew me to this brand was the elephant logo. If you know me at all, you know I am literally obsessed with elephants. Luckily, this beauty brand not only has that adorable elephant logo, but skincare products that work wonders! I have been using the Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Defense SPF 30 all summer and it has kept my facial skin sunburn- and redness-free! It is also super lightweight, not making my skin feel oily, sticky, or hot! That’s a check in my beauty book.

(Garnier Volume Extend Instant Bodifier Dry Shampoo $5.99, www.garnierusa.com)

Go Big or Go Home
I love a dependable dry shampoo product like no other girl out there. Not only does it allow you to make your hair last days without shampooing or conditioning, but it allows your hair’s natural oils to produce. Remember, you shouldn’t wash your hair every day, but more like every two or three days, especially if you have curls like me! I love Garnier’s original dry shampoo formula and have been trying out their Volume Extend Instant Bodifier Dry Shampoo, which I have equally fallen in love with. It keeps my curls wild and voluminous without having to wash them every day.

Maybelline The Blushed Nudes Palette
(Maybelline The Blushed Nudes Palette, $9.99, www.ulta.com)

Go Nude
The versatility of the Maybelline Blushed Nudes palette is limitless due to the pigmented colors provided in it. Whether you are going for a day or night look, it can easily be achieved with this eye-opener! The build in color is absolutely incredible and you can always come up with a new look every day. It has become my go-to palette of the summer!

Josie Maran Watercolor Check Gelee
(Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelée $22, www.sephora.com)

Cream Blush
A blush with a creamy formula is my go-to during the summer heat, since I find that they are easier to apply either lightly or intensely. They also last throughout the day without me having to reapply as much as I would with a powder blush. One of my favorite cream blushes is Josie Maran’s Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelée in Poppy Paradise. I adore the bright shade of this cream blush. It goes beautifully with my sun-kissed skin from these hot days!

Hot Tools 1 Flipless Curling Wand
(Hot Tools 1” Flipperless Gold Curling Wand $47.99, www.ulta.com)

Bring the Heat
Usually in the summer time, I stay away from using any type of heat on my hair for as long as possible. However, there are days where a bit of structure from a styling tool does create that extra ‘oomph.’ Always remember to use some type of heat protecting product before using heat against your hair. When I crave a bit more bounce in my curls, I spray heat protectant over them and then go in with a curling iron, curling a few pieces here and there in different directions. Then I just tousle them all out and am off on another adventure!
