Black History Month: Black Designers from the Past and Today that Should be Remembered After February

Let’s make way for Black History Month and these black designers that certainly deserve recognition after February. These designers have captivated the fashion world each stitch at a time. Their lines are provocative, unique, and absolutely beautiful. The fashion world should be just as diverse as the people it is meant to dress. These designers not only established that rule, but tirelessly made it their own.

Zelda Wynn Valdes

How could we begin our list without including historical figures first? Zelda Wynn Valdes is a name you ought to know. After working in White Plains, NY with her own dressmaking business, she eventually moved her talents out to Broadway with her studio Zelda Wynn and became the first black-owned business on Broadway in 1948. Her clients included the very famous Ella Fitzgerald, Dorothy Dandridge, Gladys Knight, Joyce Bryant, and many more. She even designed the entire bridal party of Maria and Nat King Cole in 1948. In 1960, the first Playboy Club had its opening, featuring the original Playboy Bunny costume designed by the talented Zelda Wynn Valdes.

 

Stephen Burrows

The 60s and 70s represented a time in American fashion that rang electric, wild, and eccentric. There in the center of it all was Stephen Burrows. He started his career in fashion by studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC, graduating by 1966. Shortly after, in 1968, Burrows began working with the epitome of fashion and art in the late 60s/70s, Andy Warhol. Some years later, he was the only black designer to participate in the historic Battle of Versailles of 1973 among four other American designers against five French designers. Later that year, his lingerie line “Stevies” was sold in stores across the country including Bonwit Teller and Lord & Taylor. His clothes since then have been worn by Farrah Fawcett at the Academy Awards in 1978, Brooke Shields, Barbra Streisand, Cher, Bette Midler, Jerry Hall, and even Michelle Obama.

Patrick Kelly

“Patrick landed like a bomb in my shop in 1985. He was so gay and so full of energy, and so were his clothes,” is exactly how a store buyer from the Victoire boutiques in Paris described Patrick Kelly. After working out of a thrift shop in Atlanta where he would modify coats and dresses, he connected with Pat Cleveland  who implored him to move out to Paris. There, his energy and talent brought him almost immediate success. By 1985, Kelly was selling his clothes to the Victorie boutiques in Paris and had a six page spread in the French Elle Magazine in the month of February. He designed clothing for celebrities such as Bette Davis, Madonna, Paloma Picasso and Grace Jones and engaged in a collaboration with David Spada (where Kelly created one of his most famous designs which is now displayed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art).  By 1987, Warnaco began manufacturing Patrick Kelly’s clothes which put his designs in stores worldwide. Then, in 1988, Kelly was admitted into the governing body of the French Fashion industry: Fédération française de la couture, du prêt-à-porter des couturiers et des créateurs de mode (French Federation of Fashion and of Ready-to-Wear Couturiers and Fashion Designers).

Rihanna, known as a girl crush for many women, made it clear that she doesn’t want to sacrifice her curves while getting back in shape. She told British Vogue that she’s most likely a girl crush for being “thicc.”

I’m about to get back into the gym and stuff, and I hope I don’t lose my butt or my hips or all of my thighs. I’ll lose some but not all. And I think of my boobs like ‘Imma lose everything, everything goes!But, you know, it comes with a price. You want to have a butt, then you have a gut.

In her June 2018 Vogue interview, she told the magazine that women need to “laugh” at themselves and accept whatever shape their body is from one week to the next.

At Any Rate, Body Positivity is a Must

Despite the constant pressure to be thin, skinny or thick, women need to accept what their body type has to offer. It’s totally refreshing to hear about past struggles from women who have been there. Emmy Rossum, Stepanie Beatriz and Rhianna all have the right mindset. Accept yourself because you’re beautiful, no matter what your shape is from one month to the next. Don’t look to a number on a scale or a physically impossible image that you dream of accomplishing. Remember that many images these days are photoshopped, and every woman’s healthy weight is entirely different. That’s what makes us uniquely our own.

Ocean’s 8 Shines Bright Like a Diamond and Dazzle’s Audience

The most anticipated movie of the summer is finally out in theaters and we are here for it! Ocean’s 8 is unlike any other Ocean’s movie. Ocean’s 8 is filled with beautiful, witty and smart women. There are no males that have a main role in this movie, making it different than the past Ocean’s movies.

 

Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), is Danny Ocean’s (George Clooney) sister. Debbie is finally released from prison after five years; eight months and twelve days and she has a brilliant plan for her next heist. But no heist is complete without a kick-ass team; Nine Ball (Rihanna), Lou (Cate Blanchett), Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway), Rose (Helena Bonham Carter), Tammy (Sarah Paulson), Constance (Awkwafina) and Amita (Mindy Kaling) all join Debbie on her biggest heist yet.

 

Debbie is money hungry and knows just how to get a few extra million dollars, and by a few extra million dollars, I mean $150 million. Ocean’s 8 is out for a $150 million Cartier necklace that they can only steal on the night of the biggest party in the world, the Met Gala.

 

There were even a few guests from the past Ocean’s movies that made an appearance in the movie! In the beginning of Ocean’s 8, we find out that Danny Ocean is dead. There is never an explanation on how or when he died. This was frustrating to say the least, as fans of the Ocean’s movies are itching to know why the writers chose Danny to be dead and why they never went into detail on how he died.

Rihanna’s Fenty Lingerie: Inclusive or Exclusive?

After a lot of anticipation, Rihanna released her Savage X Fenty Lingerie line, and honestly, there are mixed reviews.

After the artist received rave reviews following the release of her Fenty Beauty line, which featured an inclusive 40 shades, it felt fitting for Rihanna to release a lingerie line that had inclusive sizing. Rihanna is already a well-known icon in the fashion industry, so there were high expectations for this launch. Released on May 11, just four days after Rihanna co-hosted the Met Gala—a major fashion event that she has pretty much dominated—the Fenty line received mix reviews.

Rihanna herself has even been open on her own weight gain/loss and instead of shaming herself—like many spectators have—she has embraced her curves. “One day I can literally fit into something that is bodycon, and then the next day I need something oversized,” commented Rihanna when asked at her Fenty Puma AW17 launch about her weight. Rihanna has taken her own image and applied it to her new lingerie line. The Savage X Fenty line featured a variety of over 100 garments ranging from catsuits to garters, seven nude shades, and sizes going up to 44DDD in bras and 3XL in panties. As Rihanna herself tweeted: “Savages come in all shapes and sizes.” Having inclusive sizing is not just a footnote; it is a branding strategy and marketing opportunity. As more designers are using curvier and plus size models in runways shows, having inclusive sizing gives Rihanna’s brand a competitive advantage, while also making her even more admirable to the public.

However, many were disappointed with Rihanna’s range of sizing. The line started at a 32 waistband for bras, which caused many who have a more petite body type to be left out. There were also many who simply could not fit into a DDD cup, who were also left out. Many fans who were planning to shop an inclusive line were extremely disappointed upon finding out that their sizes were not available. Since receiving so much negative feedback, the line plans to introduce even more sizes.

Rihanna’s line encompassed not only her sexy and sassy personality, but also her embracement of her own body type. The line promoted body positivity and acceptance by featuring inclusive sizing… just not inclusive enough for all. The line has since begun advancement of sizes.

2018 Met Gala: The Most Heavenly Looks

Did it hurt when you fell from heaven? Well maybe these ten fashion icons can answer that age-old question after their appearances in the 2018 Met Gala, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” It’s finally that time of year again where artists, designers, and celebrities come together to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and show their adoration and appreciation for the arts and fashion. For many fashion fanatics and art lovers everywhere, this was truly a night of heaven on earth. Here are some of the most heavenly looks that would even impress Michelangelo.

 

If you think Emilia Clarke is on fire in Game of Thrones, you will be amazed when you see her in this Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda gown. The gold intricacies and cherub paintings decorate an otherwise classic black dress, fitting the “Heavenly Bodies” theme perfectly and elegantly. And of course, where would our queen of the dragons be without a golden crown and royal earrings to match?

 

Another celebrity that matched royalty with the Catholic imagination is none other than Mindy Kaling. Wearing an off-white gown and blue gloves adding a magnificent pop, Mindy glides over the red carpet with grace and poise as she balances the crown of the evening. Distinguished by ornate, gold patterns and large sunburst, blue jewels, this crown would give the Queen of Sheba goose bumps.

 

Does a show-stopping nun sound impossible? Well, Lily Collins sure proves that wrong in her Met Gala look. Lily graces the show with a gothic Givenchy, nun-inspired gown. Her top piece was cut into edgy angles while her bottom piece was short, yet accompanied by a black, sheer skirt that brushed the floor as she walked, allowing for a high-fashion twist on the traditional nun attire. She included a large, spiked headpiece, jewels in her flawless make-up, and even rosary beads to complete the godly look.

 

King of Wakanda, Chadwick Boseman is royalty once again in his Versace suit and cape. Dressed all in the virgin color white, Chadwick proudly enters the Metropolitan Museum of Art ready to turn heads. His suit is embellished with beautiful gold accents including the renaissance inspired patterns along his pants and the elaborate crosses on his cape. Right down to his gold shoes, Chadwick looks holy on this night of fashion.

 

All that I can say, is that Mary J. Blige looks like a true goddess as she walks the red carpet at the Met Gala. Her mint Versace gown and custom made boots gives her the artistic look that everyone is here for. Her floor-length dress gives her the appearance of walking on clouds while also sporting a gorgeous leg cut-out, allowing her to show off her thigh-high gold embroidered boots.

 

Perhaps one of the most famous pieces of art associated with the “Catholic Imagination” is none other than Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. Causing a ripple in the hearts of art enthusiasts, pop star Ariana Grande decided to bring it to New York with her Vera Wang gown inspired by “The Last Judgment.” Through the gold, sheer top layer, the painting comes to life in vivid colors and innovative design.

 

Priyanka Chopra proves to be flawless fan favorite yet again at this year’s Met Gala. Priyanka chooses her look as a deep red, form fitting, Ralph Lauren velvet gown accompanied by a matching cape that drapes behind her as she walks. The look of course would not be to the level of extravagance without her stunning hood from her shoulders to her head with delicate gold netting and jewel embellishments, giving her audience a peek at the modern Catholic imagination.

 

Speaking of bold colors featured at the Met Gala, Troye Sivan sports a vivacious Valentino red suit accompanied by black studded shoes as a neutral eye-rest for color. His mesh, see-through top definitely provided the “Heavenly Body” portion of the 2018 theme while the red embodied the red blood of Christ, supporting the “Catholic Imagination” part.

 

How could we possibly go without mentioning Katy Perry and her exorbitant set of angelic wings? These 10-foot-tall Versace wings easily captured the attention of all attendees and showed that Katy didn’t need Jacob’s Ladder to reach Heaven. Underneath the feathery glory, she wore a dazzling gold dress and gold thigh-high boots to match. Yet again, Katy Perry has spared no part of her charisma for fans and artists alike.

 

And of course, last but not least is a star that stepped up as the evening’s pope of fashion, Rihanna. From head to toe, Rihanna is dripping in flashy jewels and unparalleled style. Not a single inch of her outfit is left empty of beads and jewels. Even her gargantuan, bishop-inspired headpiece was drenched in sparkles. Rihanna wore this head-turning ensemble with such grace and beauty that even through its heavy weight, Rihanna’s strut remained unraveled, like the true queen of Heavenly Bodies. This month, Rihanna is releasing her own line of holiday makeup called the Rihanna Fenty Beauty Holiday Collection. She promoted a teaser video of a new eyeshadow palette with a rainbow case and fourteen shimmer finish colors. Some shades include gold, indigo, berry, hot pink, aqua, silver, olive, and lime green—perfect for every festive holiday look. In another Instagram post, she reveals the entire collection including liquid liner, lip glosses, lipsticks, and a makeup brush. In addition to her universal lip gloss from her original launch, she is introducing new fall colors like orange, pink, berry, peach, and lavender.

Her successful launch of her makeup line on September 8th had fans obsessing over her cruelty-free products. Sephora has had a difficult time keeping her makeup in stock as products like Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Foundation and her Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter flew off the shelves. Her Rihanna Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer gained 500 reviews under a week and earned itself a 4.9 rating on Sephora. Top Beauty Looks From NYFW

New York Fashion Week is one of the many big events that take place in the city. The streets are filled with fashionable individuals rocking high-end designers or even slaying the sidewalks with their very own looks. However, the models aren’t the only ones dressed to impress; from popping, bright colors to mink or leather, the city itself becomes a fashion show during this time. As much as we love viewing videos or photos from the shows and admiring the pieces from the designers, many people don’t acknowledge the beauty theme for each show. Makeup and hair play just as an important a role as the pieces from the collections of any fashion show. The themes can go from simple and natural to bold and dark. Every model is beautiful in their own way, which makes the beauty part of the game an even more interesting feature to the runway shows. While the makeup and hair may be similar, every model wears them differently. That being said, here are the top beauty looks from NYFW. 

 

Pamella Roland SS18 X Frédéric Fekkai

For her SS18 collection, Pamella Roland brought in Stefanie Francois, the lead stylist at Frédéric Fekkai, and created a stunningly sleek and clean hairstyle and makeup that surely brought the collection to life. The entire look was created with Frédéric Fekkai’s collection The One and was inspired by highlighting every model’s high points on the face as well as embracing their natural features.

Banana Republic SS18, by Stila Cosmetics

This gorgeous look was created by Sarah Lucero, Stila Cosmetics, and Global Executive Director of Creative Artistry for Banana Republic. The look featured a dewy face and used Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color to shape the brows. For the eyes, Lucero opted to go for bold and lengthy lashes all while staying on the natural side. The look is finished with flushed cheeks and soft pink lips.

Brock SS18

The models had gorgeous burgundy-smokey eyes with a touch of bronze. The look reflected a romantic feel that brought the entire collection of floral and patterns together.

Jeremy Scott SS18

While the makeup here was minimal, the clothing is what did all the talking. Even though there wasn’t any eyeshadow, lipstick, foundation, blush, etc., the models had crystals glued below their low lashes for a pop of shine. Certainly creative and unique for a no-makeup look.

Fenty x Puma SS18

The Fenty x Puma collection definitely was one that was most talked about. And, yes, you guessed it: the models wore Rihanna’s makeup line Fenty Beauty to give them a blinding glow on the runway. A highlighter from the line was placed on the models’ cheekbones, eyelids, and the inner corners of their eyes, making every model on the runway a shining star.
