Lana Del Rey Announces New Album Coming in 2019

Lana Del Rey just released a new song this last week. The tune, called “Mariners Apartment Complex,” has Lana’s signature moody sound. If you haven’t heard it yet, you can give it a listen below. A new single is exciting, but it isn’t nearly as exciting as the prospect of another full-length Lana Del Rey album. After “Mariners Apartment Complex” was released, Lana announced the new album, which is set to drop in 2019. Lana will release another single from the upcoming album in the next couple days, so stay tuned for that as well. This is Lana’s sixth album, and the first release since her 2017 album Lust for Life.

Lana’s Album Will Drop After She Releases a Book of Poetry

Who knew that Lana was a poet, too? Apparently, even she didn’t know. The singer told DJ Annie Mac, “I was having a little bit of writers’ block with the music last Fall and so just sat down to write some words without music and I realised there was just a couple of things I wanted to say through some poems, which is funny.” Whether Del Rey chooses to self-publish or seek a publisher, we will probably be seeing them on the internet eventually.

There is no official title or album artwork yet, but we do know who is producing the album. Jack Antonoff—who has worked with the likes of Lorde, Taylor Swift, and St. Vincent—has been confirmed as the producer.

The sound will be unmistakably Lana, but according to  what the singer told R1, the album will have “some surf elements to some of the songs” and “a little Red Hot Chili Peppers influence.”

As of yet, there are no set tour dates or scheduled performances for the 2019 release.

What the Single, “Mariners Apartment Complex” Tells Us About the New Album

So far, we know that Lana is working with Jack Antonoff, there will be a blend of influences in the sound and it will drop sometime in the early months of 2019. If we take a look at the first released single, “Mariners Apartment Complex,” the lyrics give a hint as to the vulnerable strength that may be behind the rest of the album. If the song is any indicator, we can only hope to find more haunting tracks that express not only an inner-strength and vulnerability but some dramatic self-realization. These are the things that most of us find behind Lana’s honesty: relatable sadness, experiences and raw emotion.

Singer-Songwriter Tom Odell Releases “Half as Good as You” Duet with Alice Merton

One of the latest duets released in the indie singer-songwriter scene is a catchy new single, “Half as Good as You” by Tom Odell and Alice Merton. The song is irresistibly relatable, and not in a bad way. This song isn’t just a shameless guilty pleasure, it’s a legitimately good tune. Odell initially intended the song to be a solo work for his third album, but soon came to realize that the song could be stronger as a duet. And boy, was the decision the right one to make. The finished product is one that could become every hopeless romantic’s new favorite, merely because of the raw emotion behind the subject matter of the song.

“Half as Good as You” is Heartbreaking, Hopeful and Terribly Relatable

Have you ever experienced a relationship that just couldn’t work out no matter how hard you tried? Most of us have. Even if you haven’t, it’s hard to deny that “Half as Good as You,” is a song that parallels closely to the complex relationships in today’s busy atmosphere. Clearly, Tom Odell had this in mind when penning “Half as Good as You.” The song focuses on a relationship that will undoubtedly never work out. But what makes this a refreshing tune is the realization that no other person will quite compare to the one of the past.

While the lyrics are rather fatalistic, they’re also painfully honest. Odell and Merton voice separate verses and eventually come together in the conclusion that if they “ever find anybody half as good” then they guess “maybe that will do.” It’s sad, but also somewhat hopeful, without neglecting the truth.

Odell and Merton Met at a Musical Festival Before Collaborating on “Half as Good as You”

Tom Odell is a singer-songwriter out of London, while Alice Merton is an up-and-comer out of Germany. So how did these two come to do a collaboration? The singers met each other in Munich at a music festival last year. Merton confessed that she was a fan of Odell’s since he released his first EP. “I loved his music. So when I found out he wanted me to be on a song I couldn’t really believe it.” Merton isn’t too well-known in the U.S. yet, but her pop-rock tune, “No Roots,” has held a number one spot in France and number two in Germany. If you’re already a fan of Odell, chances are you’ll love this collaboration. It’ll be easy to find yourself falling in love with Merton’s honest, powerful voice. The two singers mesh so well in “Half as Good as You” that you just may find yourself wishing for an entire album of Odell and Merton duets.

Rising YouTube Singers

YouTube has come a long way since the place in which it once began. I remember logging in to view the videos of those I had subscribed to and watching ordinary people display their talent with the use of camera from the comfort of their own bedroom. That part of the experience hasn’t changed, but this platform has grown and become much more than it once was. Instead, it is now a place where companies, brands, and record labels seek new talent to sign on with them. Along with the expansion of YouTube, many people have been shown to find success with it, and the search to find the next Justin Bieber is on! So, here are a few rising YouTube singers to keep on your radar:
1. Madilyn Bailey
This small-town Wisconsin singer began her YouTube journey with just a camera and an acoustic guitar in hand. Now, she’s making her way up to the big leagues by creating music videos, collaborating with other YouTube artists, and scoring a record deal in France! Three months ago, Madilyn announced that some of her viewers had requested her “Titanium” cover to play at one of the biggest radio stations in France! The song caught a lot of attention from various labels in the area and from there, she chose to officially sign on with Play On Records by Warner Music France. Although her album will first come out in France, she has promised her viewers that it will be made available worldwide not too long after. With writing her own music, Madilyn describes the sound of her upcoming album to be ‘moody pop,’ which as she explained, was a genre she always saw herself in. Since 2009, her viewers have watched Madilyn grow and transform from a small-town girl to a rising artist who has managed to keep both her humbleness and sanity intact over the years. We might just have a new Taylor Swift in the making!

2. Sarah Close
Sarah Close’s great rise in YouTube stardom can be directed to her cover of Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood.” The UK singer has covered a variety of artists from Halsey to Years & Years, giving more and more attention to artists who are not given enough credit for their beautiful melodies. With using very minimal equipment in her videos, the confidence she has in her own voice is highlighted and displayed for the world to see. Sarah’s piano covers give a softer tone to otherwise more upbeat songs, showcasing her natural ability with the ease of making each song into her own. Her creativity does not end there, however. She created a sort of segment in her YouTube channel where she allows her viewers to ask her questions, but instead of simply answering them, she creates a song out of the Q&A. In her first ‘Singing your Questions’ video, she set the record straight after being asked on numerous occasions why she doesn’t simply audition for X-factor. Her response was one that, for me at least, makes you believe in the pure drive of passion: with her being someone with such great talent, she refuses to go on X-factor for the reason of not wanting to gain the wrong type of attention. Although she hasn’t showcased any of the songs she has written herself, she hints in her videos from time to time that they are on their way and will be displayed at the right time, in the form of an album. In the meantime though, she continues to bring her viewers along with her in this journey that I am determined will lead her to much success.

3. Jake Coco
Jake Coco has been making his way up the YouTube ladder since 2006. His subscriber count may be just over 300,000, but many of his videos have reached millions of views! With his philosophy behind his own music being the conductor of emotions, Jake has been shown to make his own rules to succeed in this industry. He mentioned in an interview that once he had found some success with his YouTube channel, he wanted to submit his music to iTunes. However, iTunes only allows you to submit music with a record company name, and so in the moment, Jake decided to make one up and call it Keep Your Soul Records. Although it was simply a joke at first, the label began to do really well and he was approached by other artists who wanted to be a part of it. In January 2015, Jake released Hammer & Strings, an EP on iTunes showcasing a few of his original songs. By helping other YouTube artists along the way, Jake Coco has not only made a name for himself, but he has proved that it is really up to you to make your own dreams come true!

Singers We Want to Make a Comeback

Thinking back to a few years ago, some amazing, talented artists come to mind…so here are some singers we want to make a comeback!
Hilary Duff
Hilary Duff
Hilary Duff was like the older sister you never had for those of us who watched Lizzie McGuire and listened to her infectious music. I’d be lying if I said that I don’t still jam out to “Come Clean” and “Why Not.” I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for a new Hilary Duff album, or even a Lizzie McGuire reunion!
Jesse McCartney
Jesse McCartney saw massive success with hits like “Beautiful Soul” and “Leavin.’” From his days in Dream Street to his headlining tours, Jesse McCartney amassed tons of fans, who I’m sure wouldn’t say no to a chance to relive their childhood and go to a Jesse McCartney concert.
2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals
Danity Kane
Danity Kane’s music is from a different part of our childhood than the previous two singers on the list, but that doesn’t mean we don’t miss them! “Showstopper” was one of the most popular songs of 2006, and you can’t even deny that you jammed out to “Damaged” whenever it came on the radio. In 2013, Danity Kane announced that they’d be reuniting, and we’re anxious to see how it plays out!
Teen pop icon JoJo made it big in 2004 with her breakout single, “Leave (Get Out”). The song reached number one on the Billboard pop charts when she was just thirteen years old! It’s been ten years since that release, and I think we’re all ready for JoJo to release another huge pop hit!
Ryan Cabrera
Ever since I first heard the song “On The Way Down,” I’ve loved Ryan Cabrera. He has such a unique, laid back voice, but I’m sad to share that he hasn’t released a new album in almost six years. I would love for Ryan Cabrera to make a comeback with a more mature, bluesy sound!
