A Few Amazing Alternative Uses for Botox

by

Today we’d like to share with you some amazing alternative uses for Botox. You’ve heard of Botox and you’ve seen what it’s capable of. It smooths out wrinkles, makes the face look much younger and resonate with that distinct vibrancy that no other cosmetic treatments can offer. Botox is great for anyone looking to freshen themselves up after years of the general wear and tear that skin has to go through.

But what if I were to tell you that Botox NYC, LA and other major clinics’ favorite cosmetic compound, isn’t exclusive to the beauty industry. You won’t believe just how many other uses the botulinum toxin, as it’s called in the scientific world, has. It’s a very versatile compound, thanks to how it functions.

Alternative Uses for Botox

Photo by Dalila Dalprat on Pexels

Botox or the botulinum toxin is able to numb certain nerve endings and deactivate. Normally, if this happens through other means, like a disease known as botulinum, this would be very problematic and could severely damage the body. When injected into the right parts of the body and or face, using the right technique and the right amount, Botox will not cause any harm, but can be used for the benefit of the patient.

And again, you’ll mostly hear about it in celebrity gossip or news about the beauty industry. But Botox does exist outside of these boundaries and is utilized in a lot more ways than you initially think.

A Steady Eye

Alternative Uses for Botox

Photo by Anderson Miranda on Pexels

Eye twitching happens to all of us. Whether it’s from a lack of sleep or a nervous breakdown, we’ve all felt our eye twitch at some point in our lives.

Unfortunately, for some people out there, eye twitchiness isn’t really something that happens from time to time, but is a regular part of their day. You initially think that this is really not that big of a deal, but if it happens regularly and for a long time, it can cause a lot of discomfort to the person suffering from it and could potentially even lead to other kinds of damage to the body.

And for many decades now, since around the 50s, doctors have been injecting botulinum toxin into certain parts around the eye, specifically the muscles that are causing the twitching. When Botox is injected, it numbs the nerve endings that are transmitting commands to the muscles, causing them to stutter uncontrollably.

Once these nerves have been numbed and temporarily deactivated, they can no longer tell the muscles that they are connected with to start twitching. so this does not necessarily cure the eye twitching is, but rather stops the eye muscles from going out of control.

A Headache Gone

Photo by Alexander Dummer on Pexels

If you haven’t had a migraine, chances are you will sometime in the future, because it is a very widespread condition. For those of you who don’t know what it is: it’s a headache that is very hard to get rid of and it’s very bothersome. This is a very simple way to put a medical condition that’s found in millions of people across the world and has no cure as of yet. not only does it not have a cure, but doctors to this day don’t really know where migraines even come from.

But until then there are ways of stopping the pain and yes, they do involve Botox. Much like how the Botox is able to stop the nerves from transmitting signals to the eye muscles to twitch, it can also block the sensation of pain from being transmitted to the brain. Much like with the eye twitching; Botox doesn’t so much as cure the migraine, as it merely hides it and prevents its sensations from reaching the brain and the person feeling pain.

Now again, this is a huge oversimplification of what actually happens and the actual procedure is much more complex than a couple of sentences. But this is the general gist of how doctors can use Botox to treat migraines. The results of the treatment have been largely positive, with many patients claiming that they feel significantly less pain after being injected. So while the future looks really bright for treating migraines with botox, the treatment is still in his infancy and needs a little more time before it can be commercially available for everyone to try out.

Move Freely

Alternative Uses for Botox

Photo by Karolina Grabowska on Pexels

A lot of people suffer from joint pains. These can occur from a variety of reasons, but the most common one is age. As time goes by our bones get weaker, as do our muscle and ligament fibers. If you spent majority of your life doing a lot of physically demanding tasks, you may feel joint pains at some point in the future. This is also true for people who may not have been physically active as well. So one way or another joint pains may become a reality for you in the near future.

Similarly to how migraines are treated, Botox can also be injected into different parts of your joints to block out the pain from reaching the brain. This means that you no longer feel pain when moving around and can now use your appendages a lot more freely.

These are the results that many patients who were injected with Botox reported, but again, much like with the migraine treatment, this treatment is also still in its development phase and is not fully available to the general public as of yet, despite the positive results.

What is, however, commercially available and has been for many decades is the cosmetic use for Botox. you can find it in cosmetic clinics all across the world, but if you happen to live in NYC then you’re in luck because you have access to MiracleFace MedSpa, a Manhattan based cosmetic clinic that is really popular for its Botox NYC treatment plan. They have a lot of great deals for people who want to make a few changes in their lives, more specifically on their faces.

And with the many deals that they often have on many of their treatments, you can grab a really good bargain and a high quality cosmetic treatment with no trouble at all.

6 Reasons to Upgrade Your Beard Trimmer

by

Today we want to give you 6 reasons to upgrade your beard trimmer. There are a lot of reasons why a beard trimmer upgrade is the right choice for you. Whether you are looking to trim your facial hair for personal reasons, or you want to look your best and not feel like a freak in public, a good trimmer is something you should invest in.

Here are a few reasons that make it worth it to go this route when it comes to upgrading your beard trimmer:

  • Improved Durability And Longer Warranty
Upgrade Your Beard Trimmer

Man shaving beard using electric trimmer shaver. Male beauty grooming concept. Home lifestyle young person looking at bathroom mirror trimming hair on neck.

A new trimmer that’s more powerful has lasting features with a longer warranty. You can consider both corded and cordless electric shavers. They make cleaning your face easier without having to worry about running out of batteries.

Cordless trimmers come with a power cord or dock that allows you to charge on the go. There are different cord lengths available, so make sure you check with the trimmer manufacturer to find the one that’s right for you.

You should also look for a high-quality product that has at least a year’s warranty. If you have a trimmer that doesn’t have a warranty, you may experience long waits to get replacement parts and repairs done. Sites like GroomAndStyle contain information about different kinds of trimmers that’ll help you find one that fit your needs.

  • Prevents Skin Irritation

Skin irritation is one of the are major downsides of beard trimming that many people wish to avoid. This is because of facial contact with the device resulting in cuts and irritations. New models of beard trimmers now come with a protective plastic guard that prevents facial contact. This helps you to ensure a safer trim.

Sensitive skin reactions such as bumps, skin redness, and shave burns can be further avoided with new trimmer buttons features that help control the skin’s distance. You can also adjust these according to different beard lengths. Models that lack these automated features come with multiple attachments that can achieve similar results.

  • Beard Trimming On A Busy Schedule

One of the biggest reasons to invest in a trimmer is that it makes you get a trim done easily and include it in your everyday routine. Most people don’t realize how much time they spend on so many other activities; they forget to care for their beard.

They leave work, return home, sleep, and get back to their work every day. This cycle accounts for a lot of time spent without proper beard care. An improved beard trimmer such as those with rechargeable batteries allows you can trim your hair on the go while you’re about to sleep and at work.

  • Save Costs
Upgrade Your Beard Trimmer

Saving costs is another reason to invest in a beard trimmer upgrade. When you have a good trimmer, you will be saving a lot of money on salon visits, running costs, and replacement costs. New models can last up to five years before showing signs of battery wear and eventually needing a replacement.

Although you can’t completely boycott visiting salons, you’ll only need to go when you need detailed shaves. You can easily carry out routine trims to control your beard growth. This can prolong the time between your beard trims up to once in three months.

You’ll also save on the running cost of your beard trimmer with improved power efficiency. New models can last up to three weeks of daily usage, depending on your beard length, which accounts for less frequent charging times.

  • More Functionality

Every man needs to make sure that he has the latest tools to ensure that he has the best beard styling tools. An upgraded beard trimmer comes with new features that allow you to get a better trim and have a better experience.

First, you should shop for a trimmer that has multiple blades. These options are great for those who need versatility. They can trim long and short beards to the desired length in a shorter time. Also, waterproof options allow you to shave while you are under a shower, and you can easily wash the blades off without a need for extra care.

  • Easier Cleaning

New trimmers are now equipped with self-cleaning technology that guarantees hygienic use.  This is called a cleaning station which comes with alcohol or detergent-based solutions that kill up to 99.9% of germs that accumulate on your trimmer blade.

The cleaning stations can be refilled using a replaceable cartridge. Trimmers with this self-cleaning feature don’t only get cleaned but also dried, lubricated, and charged in the cleaning station. This makes it always ready-to-use with no risk of irritation.

Takeaway

Beard trimmers will continue to be an essential styling tool for bearded men. For best results, it’s advisable to upgrade your trimmer to enjoy the latest features that make for an easier trimming session on the go.

Skin irritations will be reduced, and you can save costs on your beard trimmer with improved battery life and better power-efficiency. You’ll enjoy better functionality with new adjustment features on the trimmer. With your trimmer automatically clean with its cleaning station, you can get a trim done at any time.

Investing In Yourself To Grow Your Confidence

by

Today we want to explain why you should be investing in yourself to grow your confidence.  A lack of confidence can really weigh you down. It’s hard not to compare yourself to others or spend time focusing on your flaws, but it can be a terrible spiral that is hard to get out of.

Building your confidence is something you need to do for yourself, but you can take small steps to get you there. By making a small investment in yourself, you can help build your self-esteem back up and lift some of that weight.

Follow the tips below so that you can understand why you should be investing in yourself to grow your confidence.

Treat yourself to new skincare

It’s surprising the difference some new skincare can make to not only your skin, but your confidence too! Having clear, glowing skin can help you embrace your natural beauty, and give you a much-needed boost. A visit to a facialist could help you identify your skin type and make some recommendations for products that will help enhance it.

Learn some of the secrets to a clear skin routine on a budget to help you get started.

Get a confidence-boosting haircut

You can’t beat a fresh new ‘do to help you feel 100% more confident in yourself. Don’t just book in your usual trim – try something different! Embrace one of this year’s big hair trends or go for a drastic color or length change. A conversation with a stylist will help you come to a decision based on what will suit you and what you will find easy to maintain. Stepping out of the salon with fresh hair will make you feel a million dollars.

Join a gym that makes you feel good

investing in yourself

Going to the gym and working out isn’t all about weight. Being able to maintain a healthy weight is a bonus, but it’s more about how it can make you feel on the inside. Getting fit can be a big confidence-booster, while the endorphins produced through exercise can also be a big boost to your mental health. Gyms come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s important to find one that you feel happy and comfortable in – the point is to make you feel good. Why not find one with a pool, spa and sauna? These will help make going to the gym a real treat and the perfect excuse for a bit of ‘me’ time.

Consider cosmetic treatments

If you have particular hang-ups that are not just a phase, you could consider cosmetic treatments as a way to help you feel more confident. You could choose cosmetic breast surgery, cosmetic dentistry and other treatments that can help you work towards feeling more confident in yourself. These aren’t treatments to be entered into lightly, but you should research further if it’s something you’re sure about.

Working on your confidence takes time, and it’s something you need to do for yourself. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that can help you feel more confident, so give it a try and show yourself the love you deserve.

Craving Simplicity in Your Skincare Routine? Try This

by

Are you ever curious to know what’s really in your skincare products? You deserve to know what you’re putting on your face every night. If you’re somebody who has an allergy or skin condition, you would understand the same struggle I have of trying to find products that can be applied to sensitive skin. Every time I turn the bottle around to look at the list of one million ingredients, I see words like glycerin, ethylhexyl palmitate, and cocamidopropyl. I don’t mean to be blunt, but what the f*@#! does that mean?

There’s nothing worse than reading the fine print of a beauty bottle and seeing hundreds of fancy words that are not only a little intimidating, but also a little scary. All-in-all, I’m just tired of using products that simply aren’t helping me no matter how hard I try or how often I use them. Say this part with me, “I want to know what I am applying to my face every night, I want to see brands use natural supplements, and I want to be able to read the ingredients in a way that I can understand!”

In order to keep my frustrations to a minimum, I started doing some research on affordable, natural facial products that will bring some simplicity to my skincare routine. But first, I had to give myself a reality check. Do I really need all of these products that are in my drawer? No more empty bottles and no more free testers— we are cleansing more than just our skin today. Say goodbye to all the products you’re keeping around because you (and I quote) “think you might use one day.” Girl, get rid of it.

Harsh love comes with a piping hot side of reality, so truly I am sorry to be the one who has to give it to you. The truth is, you don’t need all of those lotions (even if they were on sale, *insert heart breaking emoji*). After stage one is complete, you get to move onto stage two, research. Lucky for you, I’ve taken it upon myself to do the hard part for you. Here are the best natural and organic makeup and skincare brands I’ve found so far.

Image provided by Milk.

Milk Makeup has been a favorite of mine for years. I love how they spell out in digestible terms for their customers exactly what’s in their products, while heavily emphasizing they’re a vegan brand. This Vegan Milk Moisturizer has four main ingredients; Desert Milk, Fig Milk, Oat Milk, and Argan Milk. I guess now I know why they call it Milk Makeup!

100% PURE Beauty has a complete line of natural fruit pigmented makeup, wellness, skincare, hair and body products. Their Puristry Flower Water Toner is natural, vegan, gluten free, and cruelty free. Its main ingredients like rose water, witch hazel, and calendula reduce irritation and inflammation, all while balancing your oil control.

The last brand I am going to show you is Tula. This Tula Milk Cleanser does wonders for people who experience dry patches and itchy skin because it contains a very special ingredient called Colloidal Oatmeal, which soothes your skin and helps retain its moisture. Tula also has a section on their website where you can find what products and ingredients work best for you based on your personal skin concerns. Take the skin quiz here!

3 Celeb Tricks To Youthify Your Skin

by

Today we want to share 3 celeb tricks to youthify your skin. Celebrities are the envy of all who look upon them – and not just because they are rich, famous and successful.  We love celebrities, we follow their lives, their ups and downs, and their careers as they navigate being famous in an increasingly voyeuristic world. One thing we love to search for in our celebrity favorites is their skincare routines. Vogue’s Beauty Secrets series gave us a sneak peak into the everyday routines of celebrity women, but still left us wondering: “How do they do it?” We splash out on expensive moisturizers, toners, serums and exfoliates. What’s the secret? In this article you will find three tried and true celeb tricks which will give you the youthful celebrity glow you have always dreamed of.

1. Water, Water, Water

Tricks To Youthify Your Skin

Everybody on earth knows that drinking water is good for you. That’s a given. But according to celebrities whose skin radiates a gorgeous glow, water is also an amazing beauty secret which is easy to accomplish. The legendary singer and beauty idol Beyoncé told Vogue, ‘I try to take care of myself, drinking at least a gallon of water with lemon a day,’ after she gave birth to her first child, Blue Ivy. If Beyoncé declares it, all should agree: water is amazing for your skin. Other celebrities who swear by drinking water include Cameron Diaz and Jane Fonda. Rock it, ladies!

So what do the experts say? Celebrity “fads” have had their day in the sun, but nowadays, it is all about doing things for your body that are backed up by science, not just Instagram ads. According to Healthline, drinking water is important for good skin health because your skin, the largest organ in your body, is made up of water-filled cells. If these cells become dehydrated, your skin can appear dry, sunken and cracked. If the cells are sufficiently hydrated every day, your skin is more likely to appear firm, bouncy and glowy. So there you have it!

2. Facial Massage

Good skin isn’t just about having expensive skincare, like some may think. Of course, water drinking comes into it – but what else do our celebrity favorites have up their sleeves? One celeb secret which is a great way to cost-effectively boost your skin health is facial massage. Now you’re probably thinking, ‘I can’t afford a facial every damn week!’ – but facial massage doesn’t have to be done by a beauty therapist.

There are facial massagers which can be purchased for home-use, which are hailed as vital for glorious skin by celebs such as Emily Ratajkowski and Jennifer Aniston, but these are usually priced pretty highly for your average consumer. However, other forms of facial massage which require only your fingers and a bit of practice, can offer a cost-effective alternative to these. Facial massage stimulates the circulation in your face, helping your cells to heal, become less blemished and more youthful and firm. You can learn the art of facial massage from beauty therapists on YouTube!

Of course, facial massage isn’t just about reducing your wrinkles, it’s also great for your health. Many of us hold tension in our facial muscles without even realizing, so a daily rub of the forehead and jaw muscles can help loosen those knots and unwind after a long day at work.

Tricks To Youthify Your Skin3. Subtle Cosmetic Surgery

We’ve all seen badly implemented cosmetic surgeries and shuddered, right? Some celebs have, unfortunately, gone down the path of extreme plastic surgery which have left them looking strangely plastic-ified. If that isn’t the look for you, there are ways to undergo very subtle, youthful cosmetic procedures which won’t make you look like a doll.

Many celebrities who are touted as being stunning natural beauties have actually undergone very subtle cosmetic surgeries which have enhanced their natural ‘look’ without being obvious. Examples of these subtle changes are nose procedures, facelift surgery and lip enhancements which do not change the integral structure of the face but enhance the shape which is already there, contributing to a youthful, natural beauty look. If you are searching for subtle cosmetic surgeries, it’s a great idea to research well-reputed surgeons in your area who are willing to discuss your needs.

Ultimately, celebrities’ whole job is to look amazing every day – so we can’t feel too bad about not matching their crazy standards. That being said, we all want to look our best on a daily basis, and with these helpful steps, you could be one step closer to a youthful, celebrity glow which has heads turning left and right!

Get to Know Young Millionaire Isabella Barrett

by
Isabella Barrett does it all! This former Toodlers and Tiaras star is taking over the world from skin care to TV to jewerely! The 14 year old self made millionaire talks to us today about how she made it all happen.

Maya: How did you go from  Toddlers and Tiaras to where you are now?

Isabella: It’s hard to believe Toddlers & Tiaras marked 8 years since the show this past June. It was an amazing launching platform for me and I went on to be on Bravo TV Game of Crowns, Get Made Global, Kid entrepreneurs, the movie EIGHT, and now I am just finishing a new show coming out on Amazon Prime called Next Big Thing NYC. I also have had my companies Glitzy Girl, Bound by the Crown & House of Barretti

M: Can you tell us about Amazon Prime’s new show Next Big Thing NYC

I: Next Big Thing NYC is about 8 Teens who are on their come up in different fields. The cast ensemble consists of a rapper, an R&B singer, Miss Teen CT, An Olympic aspiring figure skater, A famous teen DJ, A millionaire, an actress, and an influencer. The cast is all connected in some way like a family and with family comes drama. Don’t miss the full season premiering September 25th.

Photo: Jared Siskin
Wearing House of Baretti

M: You’re only 14 and have accomplished so much. How do you handle it all? Do you make time to just be a teenager?

I: Everything that I do really revolves around being a teen. From my clothing line to my skincare to my character on the show everything is Teen-based. Aside from business and travel, I love jet-skiing, 4-wheeling, acting, and modeling. I was cheer captain last year for my school and ran track, but now with COVID we don’t really know how sports will go this year.

M: What’s the number 1 piece of advice would you give to other teens trying to make it?

I: My number one piece of advice is if you’re passionate about something and want to try it, DO IT! Being young gives you the opportunity to try and fail many times. The best way to describe that is there is a lot less at stake when you’re young.

M: What’s in store for you in the future?

I: I really think we are living in a time of change and I can see myself definitely continuing to make or invest in brands, concepts, and ideas that move me. I see college in my future and just so many amazing experiences to learn and grow from.

I also really want to adopt my first dog. I am hoping for a Lab or a golden retriever. I am very annoying when it comes to animals just ask all my friends. I can’t help but stop and talk to every dog I see and will definitely be joining a dog park walking club when I get my dog.

Clean Skincare Routine While on a Budget

by

Prevent acne, wrinkles, and keep your skin hydrated with a good clean skincare routine. And, do it on a budget! Finding good products that don’t break the bank is challenging. Below is a carefully curated list of skincare products that will help your skin and save you money. Your initial skincare regimen should focus on three products: Face Wash, Moisturizer, and Sunscreen. You can add more products – toners, masks, and serums – as you become more knowledgeable about your skin. To help avoid unwanted side effects, you should perform a patch test before applying product to your face.

Face Wash

This may surprise you, but makeup wipes should never be used. They are super irritating to the skin, leave products on the face, and are wasteful. Instead, use the double cleanse method. Use an oil-based cleanser and then follow up with a water-based cleanser. Oil-based cleansers easily break down makeup, sunscreen and dirt. However, an oil-based formulated face wash is different than an oil such as olive oil or coconut oil because oil-based cleansers contain emulsifiers. Emulsifiers allow oil to mix with water. Washing with a water-based cleanser will remove the oil-based cleanser.

Oil-Based Cleanser
Water-Based Cleanser

Toner

Finding a good toner is tricky. Denatured Alcohol is the main ingredient in many toners which can strip and irritate your skin. Avoid witch hazel because of its stripping effect. Apply toner after washing your face by pouring product into your hands and patting into the skin.

Exfoliating Face Mask

Dermatologists recommend the use of chemical exfoliants and are against physical exfoliants. Chemical exfoliants eliminate excess dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. Physical exfoliants cause microtears, irritation, and long-term skin damage. The most commonly used chemical exfoliants are Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, and Lactic Acid. Use these products with care and attention; they are strong acids and if you are not careful can burn the skin. When using these products, make sure to wear SPF in the sun. If you have sensitive skin, use extra caution when using strong chemical exfoliants. Remember to always do a patch test!

Clay Face Mask

Clay ingredients are good for their ability to cleanse clogged pores and prevent acne breakouts caused by oil.

Serum

Either apply serums separately before moisturizer, or mix different serums together in the hand with moisturizer and then apply it to the skin.

Moisturizer

Moisturizer helps keep your skin plump and youthful. Everyone should be moisturizing their face. Skipping moisturizer can actually make your skin oilier!

SPF

Everyone should wear sunscreen every day! Even if it is cloudy outside the sun’s radiation still penetrates the skin.  SPF blocks both UVA and UVB sun radiation that cause premature aging and skin cancer. These sunscreens don’t leave a greasy finish, white cast, and are reef safe!

Why You Should Practice Cosmetic Dermatology

by

Today we want to tell you why you should practice cosmetic dermatology.  Everyone wants their skin to look nice and presentable at all times. Having a damaged, dull skin can negatively impact your overall life, sometimes without notice. Small skin imperfections, though often unnoticed or simply ignored by most, can make a big difference to your skin.

Cosmetic Dermatology

Noticeable skin imperfections can lower your confidence level even when meeting new people or make you uncomfortable among your friends. However, solutions to regular skin problems have been found which makes having such skin conditions not as daunting. The invention and usage of cosmetic dermatology have provided a viable way of skin reclamation, thanks to laser technology. Laser equipment has been widely used for skin rejuvenation and skin cancer treatment. Thanks to cosmetic dermatology, individuals with skin conditions can now enjoy benefits such as:

Reduces scars on the skin

5 Reasons Why Your Skin Is Showing Signs of Aging: Can It Be Reversed?

by

Today we want to share 5 reasons why your skin is showing signs of aging.  Skin aging is influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. While some consumers are more genetically predisposed to early aging than others, everyone is also subject to the consequences of their lifestyle choices, and even those who avoid activities known to induce rapid skin aging will eventually start looking their age. Those who want to put off the inevitable for as long as possible can read on to find out about five causes of skin aging and what to do about them.

  1. Collagen Breakdown
reasons why your skin is showing signs of aging

Consumers’ skin begins to lose collagen while they are still quite young—before most even start to experience signs of skin aging. However, the process accelerates as people age, with post-menopausal women experiencing an incredible 40% loss of collagen during the first few years of menopause. That doesn’t mean all hope is lost, though. There are plenty of products and supplements available to help reduce collagen loss and even reverse it.

The most important step to take is to find a high-quality lotion that will protect against collagen loss. Women can find cbd lotion online and incorporate it into their skincare regimes alongside other products intended to reverse the visual signs of aging. Consider incorporating topicals high in vitamin C and E and retinoids to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and don’t forget to wear sunscreen. Remember that, while intrinsic aging can’t be prevented, consumers willing to invest the time and effort can wage successful wars against extrinsic aging to keep their skin looking younger for longer.

  1. Sun Exposure
reasons why your skin is showing signs of aging

Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light accounts for around 90% of premature skin aging and damage, including skin cancer. Put simply, spending too much time in the sun is harmful to the skin. It causes what is known as photoaging, which occurs slowly over the course of years to produce undesirable cumulative results.

With each unprotected exposure to the sun, the skin loses more of its ability to repair itself. This allows damage, including collagen and elastin breakdown, to accumulate over time, and sun-exposed skin develops wrinkles and becomes loose or leathery.

The best way to avoid UV light damage to the skin is to stay out of the sun during the brightest times of the day. Health-conscious consumers should also make a point of applying sunscreen every time they go outside for more than a few minutes, even if it’s cloudy out or the weather isn’t very hot. The sun can still cause damage on cloudy days.

  1. Free Radical Damage

Free radicals are tiny, highly reactive molecules that can cause damage to many cells in the body, including skin cells. They do their damage by bonding to other atoms or molecules, which results in oxidative stress. Oxidative stress weakens cells and tissues, causing premature skin damage.

The problem is, free radicals are everywhere. They can be found in foods, medicines, water, and the air, and are even produced by the body as a byproduct of metabolism. Some of the most common causes of excessive oxidative stress include air pollution, UV radiation, poor nutrition, smoking, drinking alcohol, and exposure to pesticides. Consumers can limit their exposure to free radicals through lifestyle choices like quitting smoking and drinking and wearing sunscreen, but they can’t eliminate it entirely.

The best way to protect against oxidative stress is to consume plenty of antioxidants. These compounds can be found in food, supplements, and skincare products. They work by binding to free radicals, preventing them from causing damage to healthy cells. When looking for new skincare products, supplements, or foods to incorporate into a healthy diet, look for antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, turmeric, green tea extract, sea buckthorn, and astaxanthin.

  1. Inflammation

Inflammation is a natural process that protects the body against pathogens like bacteria and viruses and initiates the tissue healing process. In the short term, it’s a healthy defense mechanism against chemicals, pollutants, and pathogens. When inflammation becomes chronic, though, it can become a serious problem.

Chronic inflammation contributes to skin sensitivity, redness, and irritation. It also promotes premature skin aging. When exposed to a triggering stimulus, skin cells produce inflammatory hormones known as cytokines and chemokines. These hormones can cause vasodilation or activate nerve cells. They also trigger immune cells to migrate to the skin, where they produce even more inflammatory hormones, free radicals, and chemicals, all of which can cause further damage.

Those with chronic inflammation problems have a few options for treating them. They can investigate synthetic immunosuppressive drugs, or they can purchase botanically based products that harness the power of nature to fight inflammation. Curcumin, found in turmeric, is one of the most effective botanical compounds for treating skin inflammation. Other helpful compounds include quercetin, found in apples; epigallocatechin gallate, found in green tea; bisabolol, found in chamomile; and resveratrol, found in wine.

  1. Glycation

Glycation reduces the ability of the skin’s proteins to function normally, so it is strongly associated with extrinsic aging. It occurs when the body produces excess glucose molecules, usually after eating sugar, which binds to collagen and elastin to create a chemical bridge between the proteins. The glycated fibers become rigid, leading to cracked, thin skin associated with premature aging.

The best way to avoid glycation is to reduce sugar intake. When consumers eat less sugar, their bodies produce fewer glucose molecules. It’s most important to avoid refined sugars, but even natural sugars found in honey, maple syrup, agave, and many fruits can also be harmful when consumed in large quantities. Those concerned about their skin need to balance consuming plenty of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables with monitoring sugar intake.

The Bottom Line

While genetics play a role in determining how consumers’ skin will age, extrinsic factors like sun exposure, diet, air pollution, and lifestyle choices all have a much stronger link to premature aging. That’s good news since it means that consumers can take steps to effectively reduce the visible signs of aging and keep their skin looking its best without expensive medical interventions.

Independent From the Seasons: 6 Ways to Keep Your Delicate Female Skin Resilient When the Weather Gets Cold

by

Today we want to talk to you about great ways to keep your skin resilient when the weathers cold.  People tend to get dry skin a lot in the winter. Before thinking that you need to just live with it or start constantly reaching for the moisturizer, spend a few minutes considering your typical daily routine. You can take just a few simple steps to limit your risk of suffering from this common condition. You’ll be getting compliments on your skin instead of advice on what to do to make it look and feel better. Then you’ll be the one providing advice to your friends and family members on how to deal with their dry skin in the winter.

Try Hemp-Infused Oil Skin Care Products

Although it may seem counter-intuitive to people with oily skin, using oil-based products can be helpful even for them. Your skin produces more oil if it’s too dry, and oil can help seal in moisture, keeping your skin more hydrated and limiting excess oil production. Hemp oil in particular can be beneficial because it contains gamma-linoleic acid, which helps minimize inflammation and keep your skin looking its best. Even better, hemp oil may have some anti-aging benefits, meaning it will help your skin stay looking young and beautiful. You can read this blog to find out more about how these products can help.

Consider Avoiding Scented Products

You may enjoy applying a lotion that smells nice, but this isn’t always the best thing for your skin. Many people are sensitive to fragrances, and if this is the case, these substances can dry out your skin and sometimes even make it itchy. You’re better off buying an unscented product. If you don’t notice any difference when using an unscented product versus your favorite scented lotion or cleanser, you can always go back, but this one small switch could lead to healthier skin, so why not give it a try? It may just leave you with healthier skin. If you can’t do without the scented products, consider looking for those that use natural fragrances rather than artificial, as people tend to be more sensitive to artificial fragrances than to natural ones.

Don’t Forget the Sunscreen

Sunscreen isn’t just for the summer months. If you spend time outdoors in the winter, sunscreen is still important. The sun reflects off of snow, for example, making sunburns even more likely if you’re out enjoying the snow. Use at least an SPF 30 with broad-spectrum protection. This is especially important if you’re out during the peak times for the sun between 10:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon or if you’re up in the mountains at a higher elevation where the sun is stronger. Start out the day with a moisturizer that contains sunscreen, and then be sure to reapply every two hours that you’re outside, just like in the summer.

Monitor the Humidity in Your Home

It’s easy and inexpensive to get a small electronic device that measures the humidity in your home. During the winter, heating systems in homes tend to cause the air to be particularly dry, which can contribute to dry skin and dry, sore throats. If you check the humidity levels in your house and they are lower than they should be, invest in a humidifier and use it regularly until the humidity levels increase to a normal level of between 30 and 50 percent. Just be sure to clean it regularly so you don’t end up increasing the mold and mildew in your home at the same time as you increase the humidity levels.

Use Less Soap and Limit Hot Water

If you’re one of those people who likes their shower or bath water scalding hot, you may want to reconsider, at least during the winter months. Hot water can dry out the skin and hair. You’re better off using cool or warm water. Obviously, not many people are going to choose to take a cold shower in cold weather, but at least consider lowering the temperature as much as you comfortably can. Your skin will thank you and you may save money on moisturizer. You can even shower less often. It’s only the particularly smelly bits of the body that need a daily wash, and you only need to use soap on these parts on a daily basis. Soap can also be drying, so you may want to just rinse off the otherwise clean parts of your body with water. For the areas that need more frequent cleaning, consider buying a cleanser that isn’t made of soap. These cleansers tend to be gentler and less irritating to the skin.

Choose a More Heavy-Duty Moisturizer

People who typically use a very lightweight product, like a serum, in the summer may want to switch to a lotion, and those who usually use a light lotion may want to choose a thicker, creamier option. Of course, the exact type of moisturizer that will work the best for you will depend on your skin type. Those who have sensitive skin will have to take that into consideration, and those with acne issues will want to make sure to look for an option that won’t clog the pores and lead to an increase in acne. If heavier cream lotions make your skin too oily, consider a gel-based cream lotion. Older women who want to use anti-aging lotions should be careful of the type they choose, as some anti-aging components have a side effect of drying out the skin or causing irritation.

As you can see, there are some relatively easy ways to minimize the damage that the cold winter weather can cause to your skin. If your skin issues still persist after taking these steps, you may want to consult a dermatologist to see what other steps you might be able to take given your particular skin issues. If there’s nothing medically wrong, consider whether your clothing might be irritating your skin or whether you’re exposing your skin to the cold wind a bit too often. You don’t need to live with dry, irritated skin during the winter. You can keep your skin healthy.
