Serayah Interview

by

For Serayah McNeill, this past year has been remarkable. McNeill was studying theater at a community college when a high school friend reached out to her about a role his casting director stepmom was trying to fill. This audition was for a character named Tiana and the show was Fox’s Empire. McNeill landed the part and began to film her first onscreen role. After its debut, the show was a critical success, breaking records by being the first series in 23 years to grow in viewers for five consecutive weeks. The soundtrack was a Billboard hit, charting at number one. This thrusted McNeill into the spotlight. Since then, she’s starred alongside Taylor Swift—and a number of other influential female artists—in Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video, and she’s also a musician in her own right. With a mixtape of her own set for release later this summer, McNeill is showing the world her own musical voice, and she’s just getting started.
Cliché: When you first heard about Empire, what were your thoughts?
Serayah McNeill: I hadn’t heard about it, but when I got the audition, I was like, “This is so awesome.” It was the perfect role for me, because I already sang and that kind of stuff. This was my first onscreen role, and it was the right kind of breakout role for me.
What drew you to the character Tiana?
I automatically knew that she was so edgy and bold, and I was going to have to bring that out of myself as much as I could.
Were you nervous about having your first onscreen role on the show?
Yes. I was really, really nervous. It was my first role, and especially being on set with everyone and knowing who was already cast, I just hoped that I’d do well. I tried to learn everything I could all at once.
What do you hope for Tiana in the upcoming season?
I really hope to learn more—and for the viewers to see more—of Tiana’s personal struggle and where she comes from, what she deals with, and why she is the way she is.
Do you have a favorite song from the show so far?
Yes! “You’re So Beautiful” is one of my favorites. I heard it in the studio when I recorded my part in the live version. It grew on me, and by the time we did the actual scene in the episode, I absolutely loved it.
Now, you just turned 20, so happy birthday!
Thank you so much!
Of course! So that means you were 19 when the show took off. Were you still in school during the filming then?
At the time, I was going to a community college here in Los Angeles in the valley and had a job at H&M. So that’s what I was doing, but I was always acting and singing as much as I could.
Were you pursuing acting as a major?
I was a theater major.
Did you put school on hold for now?
I did put it on hold, but I really can’t wait to go back and finish my classes. I’m really interested in theater and the director side of it. It’s been one of my passions, aside from acting.
Aside from Empire, you were also in Taylor Swift’s highly-anticipated video for “Bad Blood.” What thoughts ran through your head when you became a part of the project?
My first thought was that it was going to be absolutely epic, not just because of the cast that was in it, but because it was just so fun and just so cinematic. I had been saying that the next role I wanted to have was going to be an action character that got to be badass, so that was just amazing.
To pick your name, “Dilemma,” for the video, I read that you settled on it after seeing the word in a thesaurus. Was that the first place you went to when you heard that you got to pick a name?
Yes. I do that a lot with songwriting, so I had to decide what I wanted to be and then saw what word fit me. There were words that came up that were too long and stuff like that. When I picked Dilemma, it was perfect, and when I told Taylor, she loved it.
How was it filming the video?
It was so cool! It was a smooth process and just so fun seeing everyone do their own “Bad Blood” piece, because everyone had their own character. It was so cool to see that.
Were the costumes put together before you got there, or did you get to choose your look?
Mine was pretty put together when I got there, but I had plenty of options of what kind of bondage look I wanted to have. I love that type of thing, and it flowed nicely with my character.
You’re releasing your own mixtape this summer, so where do you draw inspiration for your own music?
Most of my inspiration for my tone and writing style is going back and listening to music from the past. It’s where I draw inspiration for my music stylistically and rhythmically.
Who do you consider some of your influences?
Definitely the ‘90s, which would include people like Missy Elliot. I love Timbaland [also the executive producer of music on Empire] and people like Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child, Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans—Bad Boy Records in general is amazing. And then people like Aretha Franklin and Sam Cooke are some of my very favorites. I can go on and on, but I’m into the blues and soul and pop and R&B. I get so many influences from everyone, even from Paramore and Colbie Caillat. I love music in general and getting to create and evolve it.
Who would you love to collaborate with in the future?
I would love to collaborate with some rappers, like Jeremih. He’s one of my favorites right now.
Everything took off pretty fast after Empire, so what do you like to do when you aren’t working?
I love to come home and chill with my friends and go to Malibu or the canyon. My favorite thing to do now that it’s summer is go shopping and see what I find by rummaging through things.
In terms of what’s next for you, you’ve got the mixtape and show, but do you have anything else going on?
Definitely auditions for film and music. I’m really hoping that within this next season, I can have music come out of my own and complete a film.

Taylor Swift’s Most Underrated Track in 1989

by

We’ve been listening to her music since her former country-singing days of songs that included “Teardrops on my Guitar” and “Tim McGraw.” Now, Taylor Swift has emerged with a new dimension of pop music. The tracks in her latest album, 1989, carry great inspiration from the ‘80s and have resulted in the pop star winning us over yet again!
With her latest singles, “Shake it Off,” “Blank Space,” “Style,” and now “Bad Blood” breaking records upon records in the music industry, it seems as though no other artist is able to compete with this form of talent.
A song from her album that often tends to be overlooked, however, is “New Romantics.” Hearing it for the first time, you can almost picture yourself strutting down the streets of New York City with a group of girlfriends, wearing five-inch heels and wandering around aimlessly. Perhaps if we had her core group of strong female friends (and Ed Sheeran, of course), along with a $20 million penthouse suite in Tribeca, that is exactly what we would be doing.
“New Romantics” shines a new light on what we formerly viewed as romance. Swift never fails to place each word right where it belongs when arranging her lyrics and with this song, she has created a new definition of the word altogether, one that rejects mainstream society’s version. Her adaptation of romance entails the importance of close friendships, a passion for art and a love for the simple things that life has to offer. And speaking for myself, I think I prefer this version over the former.
Taylor Swift has always been and will always be one of the strongest advocates in teaching us all to gain acceptance towards our pasts, loving ourselves in the present, and creating a better life for ourselves in the future. She has an act of doing this by using the simplest forms of honesty and relatability to guide her lyrics. “New Romantics” is one of the best examples for sending off the message of self-love while creating a much more realistic image of what freedom looks like.
When asked in interviews what the pop star’s next step will be, she doesn’t have an answer just yet, but from past experience, we can all expect it to be even bigger and better than 1989. Although that seems nearly impossible at this point, if anyone can top it, it would be Taylor herself.

Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris Highest Paid Celebrity Couple?

by

Taylor Swift. You love her, you hate her, you pay her. The meek and shy country singer the world was introduced to in 2006 with her debut single, “Teardrops On My Guitar”, has grown into a worldwide pop phenomenon within her past two albums.
Recently, Forbes released their list for the top paid celebrity couples and none other than Calving Harris and Taylor Swift topped the charts. The singer songwriters recently got together, and both have their own musical success within their own respective genres.

Taylor Swift’s latest album 1989 surpassed her album sales within the first few weeks of release. In fact it sold over 1.2 million the first week of release and 4 million copies in 12 weeks. She is currently on tour and clearly by the sold out venues, her success is only growing instead of falling.
Calvin Harris is making his way into the top dogs of the music industry himself with his hits like “Summer” that won several awards including iHeart Radio Music Award For Dance Song Of The Year.

So just how much do you need to be at the top? According to Forbes, it takes a whopping 146 million dollars. Who was number two on the list? The Queen herself and her King. Beyonce and Jay Z were second,  bringing in a remarkable 110.5 million dollars. The third released top paid couple included country stars Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton capping the list at 57 million dollars.
One thing is for certain, if Taylor can top Beyonce, she is truly an unstoppable force to be reckoned with.

Best Romance Movie Songs

by

February is a month characterized by grand romantic gestures surrounding a day dedicated to the celebration of love. For me, when there’s so much love in the air, there’s nothing better than relaxing with a hopelessly romantic chick flick. However, no chick flick would be complete without a good love song to go along with it. In honor of Valentine’s Day, here are a few love songs from some of my favorite romance movies:

  1. “My Heart Will Go On,” Céline Dion, Titanic
No playlist of selected romance movie songs would be complete without this one. Titanic depicts one of the most beautiful love stories to unfold on screen and “My Heart Will Go On” provides the perfect accompaniment.
  2. “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes, Dirty Dancing
Who could forget the iconic scene in Dirty Dancing when Patrick Swayze lifted Jennifer Grey into the air? No one. This song will forever remind us all of the incredible talent and abilities of the late Patrick Swayze.
  3. “Unchained Melody,” Righteous Brothers, Ghost
This track comes from another film starring Patrick Swayze. Don’t let the title fool you; the song is most certainly an ode to love. For those of you who have loved and lost, this ballad is your anthem.
  4. “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love),” Natalie Cole, The Parent Trap
Before Lindsay Lohan ran into legal trouble, she played a pair of identical twins split between divorced parents in The Parent Trap. This song plays at the conclusion of the movie and solidifies the “happily ever after” ending.
  5. “Today Was a Fairytale,” Taylor Swift, Valentine’s Day
This song captures the magic and awe of being in love and the overall ambience that surrounds us on Valentine’s Day every year. It’s classic pre-1989 Taylor Swift and it makes you want to blush and twirl your hair around your finger.
  6. “A Thousand Years,” Christina Perri, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1
Even if you’re not a fan of Twilight, you can’t deny the romance and passion exuding from this song.“Darling, don’t be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years, I’ll love you for a thousand more…”
  7. “Quelqu’un m’a dit,” Carla Bruni, (500) Days of Summer
You don’t need to speak French to feel the love in this song; the lyrics touch you on a different level. It’s hard not to fall in love when you’re listening to Carla Bruni’s beautiful voice paired with a soft guitar accompaniment.
  8. “Young and Beautiful,” Lana Del Rey, The Great Gatsby
With her haunting voice, Lana Del Rey perfectly exemplifies the relationship between Daisy and Gatsby in this song. “Will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful?” Yes, Daisy, Gatsby will still love you when you’re no longer young and beautiful.
  9. “Boom Clap,” Charlie XCX, The Fault in Our Stars
When you weren’t crying your eyes out watching this flick, you were swooning over the cuteness of Gus and Hazel falling in love. This track describes exactly how it feels to fall in love for the first time. “Boom clap, the sound of my heart, the beat goes on and on and on…”
  10. “Today I Met the Boy I’m Going to Marry,” Darlene Love, Father of the Bride
Though this song isn’t officially included on the film’s soundtrack, it is featured in the film. The title of the track says it all. In the context of the movie though, this song is as much about family love as it is about romantic love.

Happy listening!

2015 Grammy Nominees: Record of the Year

by

The 57th Annual Grammy Awards are only a matter of weeks away, and the music world is buzzing with guesses of who will be going home with the awards in each category. The 2015 Grammy Nominations were announced last month and included new artists like Iggy Azalea and Sam Smith as well as established artists like Beyoncé and Coldplay. In anticipation of the upcoming show, here’s a simple breakdown of the contenders for Record of the Year:
“Fancy,” Iggy Azalea feat. Charlie XCX

For many ladies, this song was the perfect summer jam for 2014. It’s upbeat, catchy, and the perfect soundtrack for driving around town with the windows rolled down as your girlfriends sing along to the chorus at the top of their lungs. The music video for the song was also a parody on the classic movie Clueless, making the song that much more fabulous.
“Chandelier,” Sia

With an intense and dark message, “Chandelier” is one of those songs that sends a message. If you read the lyrics, you’ll find that the song is actually about the exhaustion and self-destruction from over-partying. Ironically enough, this song appears frequently on club music playlists. Whether she goes home with the Grammy or not, Sia’s haunting voice has made its mark on us with “Chandelier.”
“Stay With Me (Darkchild Version),” Sam Smith

This soulful song is the new anthem for all hopeless romantics who haven’t yet found “The One.” In a day and age where Tinder hookups dominate the dating scene and one night stands are the norm, Sam sings out the frustration we all feel in our love lives. His passion is apparent as he belts out his feelings in “Stay With Me” and pleads his lover not to leave. Sam is also in the running for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album.
“Shake It Off,” Taylor Swift

This song served as Taylor’s message to all her haters that no matter what, she’s just going to shake things off and keep going. As the first single off of Taylor’s newest album 1989, it was the first impression we were given of her reinvented sound. Taylor has left country music and dived completely into the genre of pop, and “Shake It Off” is her way of saying that she doesn’t care what anyone says about her. You just keep doing you, Taylor.
“All About That Bass,” Meghan Trainor

In “All About That Bass,” Meghan promotes loving yourself for who you are no matter what shape or size. Her message is empowering for all women, and — bonus! — it comes in the form of an upbeat, doo-wop style song you can jam out to. For those of you who love throwbacks to the style of the 1950s, this song’s for you! Meghan is also in the running for Song of the Year.
Who do you think will be going home with the Grammy for Record of the Year?

Taylor Swift Talks No Regrets

by

Superstar Taylor Swift has undoubtedly received enormous success–sold out concert tickets, numerous awards, and even acting gigs–but she’s, obviously, still human. She makes mistakes. But does she regret anything?

According to E! Online, Swift told ASOS Magazine, “As much as I would really like to have saved myself heartache, embarrassment or gossip, I also know that my biggest mistakes have turned into my best lessons and sometimes my greatest career triumphs.” She also stated in the January 2015 issue, “If my life had been turbulence free, no bumps in the road at all, maybe my music would be more beige.”

No regrets for those past relationships and drama! Swift is proud of how her history has influenced her and her career.

Taylor Swift Talks No Regrets

Swift also spoke to the magazine about her friendships and how her friends who have influenced her–especially in style.

Swift stated, “When I’m getting dressed, it’s always based on what my friend’s will think.” The “Shake It Off” singer sees her close friends as her “number one priority” and  stated, “the opinions of girls are more important to me at this point in my life.”

Taylor Swift Rocks a New Look

by

Forget about all the signature red lip, Taylor Swift rocks a new look in the Nov/Dec 2014 issue of the indie fashion magazine Wonderland.

On the cover, Swift goes for barely there makeup, bold eyebrows, tan skin, and lots of freckles. The “Shake It Off” singer is barely recognizable!

In the issue, Swift, according to E! Online, discusses social media and her feelings on staying single.

Swift stated, “Twitter’s dark underbelly is that it gives people a veil of anonymity: they can have a terrible day at work, feel awful about themselves, come home and get drunk and go call someone ugly on Instagram.”

The “Blank Space” artist also shared, “If people don’t have anyone to talk to about [their problems], they go online and just say wicked, gross, cruel, mean-spirited things about people. I wrote ‘Shake It Off’ for my own situation, but also for the situation that everyone finds themselves in now. It’s not a celebrity issue, it’s a people issue.”

Taylor Swift Rocks a New Look

On the topic of her relationship status, the star told Wonderland, “I’ve been with myself for so long now, I like it. I’m not willing to give up that independence for anyone. Basically, there’s the tiniest, tiniest, tiniest chance you might find someone you can have a real and long-lasting relationship with. In my teenage years, I was enamored by the idea of romance because I thought it was going to be this ‘happily ever after’ situation.”

I’d tell Taylor not to give up on love, but I have a feeling her romantic side will still persevere.
