Joaquin Phoenix is the new Joker in town

The Joker became a household name and one of the most popular villains ever since first appearing in Batman #1 in 1940. This maniacal character soon became the epitome of evil in the DC universe. Adorning an iconic purple suit, green hair and a red Cheshire smile, many actors have risen up to the challenge of portraying the character.

Cesar Romero was the first to play the Joker on screen, reprising his role from the Batman TV series, in 1966’s Batman: The Movie. The first modern interpretation of the character came from Jack Nicholson in the 1989 film Batman. Since then we’ve had Heath Ledger play his own version in The Dark Knight in 2008—a portrayal many came to greatly admire. Two years ago, Jared Leto took up the character in Suicide Squad.

So many jokers have graced the film screen, but there’s a new Joker in town.

It was announced earlier this year that Warner Bros. had in the works a new Joker solo film. It was to be an origin story into the whirlwind mind of the character. In previous films, audiences have never been introduced to what makes the Joker tick and where he came from. The film is set in the 1970s and 80s NYC.

It was wondered who would stand up to take on a new rendition of the Joker, and Joaquin Phoenix certainly has.

Set photos of Phoenix adorned in costume shows that he is more than sufficient to embody the Crown Prince of Crime. He is seen wearing a suit and tie common to the character. He even wears a god awful color combo of a dark magenta suit and emerald green shirt.

But, what makes Phoenix’s character different than previous incarnations is the widely recognized face paint. A released teaser video shows him wearing white clown makeup with blue eyes and a smeared red mouth. The cherry on top is Phoenix’s creepy and maniacal smile and dead eyes. Of course, there is the lime green hair we all love.

What’s most unexpected about the film is it being made as a stand-alone. The film has no association with the already existing DC cinematic heroes and storylines.

It is uncertain whether or not Phoenix’s Joker is a one time deal seeing as Warner Bros. wants to create different storylines with different actors.

Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker in NY Subway Footage

Recently, the first look at Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker began circulating the internet. But now we can see him in the full get-up as filming is underway in NYC. A video of Phoenix at a subway station in Manhattan shows the Joker getting off the train with a mask on as onlookers flee. TMZ was one of the first sites to report on the video. The mask is creepy enough, but his makeup manages to make his Joker look pretty spot on.

Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker: Phoenix on Wanting the Role

According to Forbes, Joaquin Phoenix previously stated in an interview with comicbook.com.

Three or four years ago, I called my agent and said ‘Why don’t they want to take one of these characters and just make a lower budget film about it, a movie but a character study, and why not take one of the villains? And I thought, ‘You can’t do the Joker, because, you know, it’s just you can’t do that character, it’s just been done.’ So I was trying to think of other characters, and he said ‘I’ll set up a general meeting with Warner Bros.’ And I said ‘I’m not gonna go, I can’t go to a general meeting.’ So I completely forgot about it, and so then I heard about this idea, I was like, ‘Oh that’s so exciting, that’s the kind of experience I wanted to have, with a movie based on a comic character.’ I felt like you could get something on screen.

Is What We See the Joker’s Final Look for the Screen?

The footage released is hopefully close to what Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker will be like. The film seems to be going for a more classic look, similar to Cesar Romero’s Joker in the 1966 Batman TV series, but way more unsettling. Appearance for the role is nearly as important as the portrayal of the iconic character. Film-goers will hope that Phoenix does the role justice, as most were blown away by the late Heath Ledger’s Joker performance. You can take a look for yourself in the subway video below.

Phoenix Doesn’t Want to Classify the Movie into a Genre

The Joker is a comic book character and part of the DC comics universe of superheroes and villains. The upcoming flick, set to come out in October of 2019, is a separate spin-off with the Joker as the main focal point. Phoenix, however, told comicbook.com that he “wouldn’t quite classify this as like any genre. I wouldn’t say it’s a superhero movie, or a studio movie or a … it feels unique.”

Whether he believes it fits into a genre or not, Phoenix goes on to say that the characters in the superhero realm are “incredible characters that are dealing with real life struggles. And sometimes that is uncovered and exposed, and sometimes it isn’t, and so I always felt, like, there were characters in comics that were really interesting and deserve the opportunity to be kind of studied.”

Robert De Niro In Negotiations To Star In First Superhero Movie Ever, DC’s The Joker

By the time the superhero genre loses its effect on audiences, every high-profile actor will make at least one appearance. Even some veterans of the industry are making the jump—some of who might surprise us all. The latest big name actor to get in on the superhero game is Robert De Niro.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, De Niro is in negotiations to star opposite Joaquin Phoenix in The Joker standalone. The origin story for the Clown Prince of Gotham won’t be a typical superhero movie in lieu of it taking place before the Joker’s rise. Nevertheless, this marks the first time Robert De Niro will appear in a superhero film. Keep in mind that it might not be his last.

As for De Niro’s upcoming role in The Joker, not many details have been divulged yet. However, the initial report from THR revealed that De Niro’s character would be a talk show host of some kind. He could be portraying one of the various television personalities from the DC universe but the most feasible candidate is Jack Ryder. He’s a known telecaster in Gotham City and could very easily be the first person to report on the Joker’s crimes in the feature film.

With The Joker being an origin story which presumably takes place in Gotham, introducing characters like Jack Ryder makes sense. Plus, Ryder is one of the biggest personalities in Gotham and would be perfect to give a play-by-play on the film’s events. There’s a chance other newscasters/talk show hosts will appear but Ryder is the most prominent in DC/Gotham lore. Therefore, he’s the most logical choice for De Niro.

Speculation aside, Robert De Niro is the perfect actor to portray an eccentric talk show host. Having portrayed both dramatic and comedic characters in the past, De Niro knows how to balance the two. De Niro will probably require a bit of an adjustment period but the role shouldn’t be too out of his wheelhouse. Besides, it’s not like De Niro is playing a superhero or supervillain himself. I mean, unless De Niro is portraying Jack Ryder identically to the comics then his character won’t be super. But in the 0ff-chance that he is, De Niro could potentially play an aged version of the Creeper; The Creeper is a supervillain with features similar to that of the Joker.
