Awards season is fast-approaching. This year’s list of Emmy nominations dropped Thursday and it’s becoming clear that top networks like HBO have something to worry about. Netflix’s vast expansion of original streaming content is growing and growing. And with that, so are the Emmy nominations. Netflix has nabbed a total of 112 noms for their originals, which just beat HBO’s 108. It’s impressive to say the least. Thanks to their originals—such as GLOW, The Crown, and Stranger Things to name a few—Netflix has jumped from their 2015 bottom spot on the nomination list to the top in 2018.
Why Netflix is Now a Top Contender for The Emmys’
It took Netflix about five years since they debuted their first original to climb to the top of the nomination charts. According to an article from The Verge last year, Netflix “has only climbed the ladder by strategically playing the odds. The company is almost doubling its nomination count every year, but it’s also producing a mind-boggling 600 hours of content and spending $6 billion a year to do so.” The success can also be attributed to the streaming interface allowing Netflix to track viewer habits, and thus provide more original content based upon viewer preferences. Well played, Netflix, well played.
Keep your eyes out next summer for the return of daredevil aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell to the big screen. The sequel to the cult classic 1980s film Top Gun is officially titled Top Gun: Maverick. Scheduled for release in July 2019, Joseph Kosinski—whose recent film credits include Only the Brave, Oblivion, and TRON: Legacy—is directing the much-anticipated sequel. In case you haven’t caught up with recent developments, here is everything you need to know about Top Gun 2, including the reunion of Maverick and Iceman.
Top Gun 2 brings us the aviators in the modern day. With technology advances, the fighter pilots’ jobs are changing—which of course, creates some problems. The sequel is quite the undertaking, as the original Top Gun film is a definitive film of the ‘80s. Fans of the movie are still quoting lines and mourning the loss of Goose! It’s no wonder that the sequel will have to bring a lot to the table to convince us. While there are many who will go see the movie for nostalgia’s sake alone, it’s also safe to say that the sequel will also be under high scrutiny from skeptics.
Will the Sequel Stack Up For Fans?
Obviously, the answer remains unknown until July 2019, when Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters. But luckily for us, some key players of the original crew are reuniting to make the movie. The obvious cast members returning? None other than Tom Cruise as Maverick and Val Kilmer as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, of course. Some of the off-screen crew veterans are also back. For instance, Harold Faltermeyer is updating the original film score for the movie—and if it were any other way, surely people would have something to say about it. Jerry Bruckheimer, one of the producers of Top Gun, is also involved in Top Gun: Maverick’s production. In a past interview with HuffPost, Bruckheimer elaborated on the film’s plot: “The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones? Cruise is going to show them that they’re not obsolete. They’re here to stay.”

The Top Gun sequel would be nothing without the return of Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer. However, there have been some concerns about Kilmer’s health after his recent struggle with throat cancer. Kilmer did not talk publicly about his health struggles until last year. In a recent interview with Extra, Cruise discussed working with Kilmer again. Commenting on the status of the actor’s health, Cruise stated that Kilmer is “doing really well.” At any rate, fans are glad to have Kilmer back and doing well.
Top Gun 2 was in talks back in 2010. By 2012, location scouting had begun. However, due to the unfortunate passing of original Top Gun director, Tony Scott, the sequel’s momentum ceased. Now, the sequel is nearly 33 years. What a trip! However, with a cast and crew as strong as this, Top Gun 2 is promising.
In case you haven’t already heard, today is international kissing day. That’s right, there is a day dedicated to celebrating kissing. A quick Google search will yield several articles about this common show of affection and why it is significant. This international recognition began in 2006 and since then, people take July 6th to appreciate their significant other, their children, and their family with the simple, but meaningful gesture. Whether you’re appreciating a loved one or the mere connection that we all share as human beings, it’s important to remember that we all need a little love in our lives. To celebrate today, let’s take a look at some of the best on and off-screen kisses.
International Kissing Day: Some of the Best On-Screen Kisses
Alfred Hitchcock’s “Notorious”

This one is for the film buffs out there who know their classic cinema. Or for those of you who don’t, here’s why this scene is so effective. The famous director, Alfred Hitchcock, found a way around the 1940s film Production Code’s ban on lengthy kisses. At the time, on-screen kisses weren’t supposed to last longer than three seconds. Hitchcock cleverly bent the rules by creating a two-and-a-half-minute kissing scene. Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman didn’t actually break that three-second lip-lock. Instead, they kissed for three seconds, took breaks to deliver lines, and then began kissing again. It was utterly genius and seamlessly executed. If you haven’t seen this kissing scene, you may be underestimating the power of the on-screen kiss.
Victor Fleming’s “Gone with the Wind”

Again, it’s another classic, but come on, who can deny the chemistry between Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler? The film, based on Margaret Mitchell’s novel of the same name, is set in the backdrop of the American Civil War. O’Hara and Butler are perhaps one of the most notoriously tumultuous couples to ever grace the silver screen.
“Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” Han and Leia’s Kiss

This kiss is pretty epic and it’s not just because it’s from a Star Wars film. The chemistry between Han and Leia is something that we all feel, thanks to Harrison Ford and the late Carrie Fisher’s portrayals. Han and Leia are a perfectly relatable couple and that’s what makes the payoff so great.

Everyone has seen this photograph. Celebrating the end of WWII, the sailor was captured mid-kiss with a nurse. All thanks to a well-timed photographer and incredibly high emotions, this photograph is probably one of the most reenacted poses for modern-day couples photos.

This vibrant display of lovers in an intertwined kiss was created by the famed Austrian painter Gustav Klimt in 1907-1908. If you’ve ever in Vienna, Austria, stop by the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere museum to catch a glimpse of this painting in person.
Don’t forget to appreciate someone with a kiss today!

If you’re in the process of creating that summer reading list, then you’d better pay attention. You probably saw that Google doodle of Octavia E. Butler on June 22nd, without even realizing who she was or why. How many of us actually take the time to stop and click on Google’s featured doodles? Octavia E. Butler, a science fiction writer, would have celebrated her 71st birthday on Friday, June 22nd. Google chose to honor this pioneering lady on her would-be birthday— and rightfully so. Butler was born in the city of Pasadena, California in the year 1947. She battled dyslexia, but she didn’t let that stop her from achieving her dream of becoming a writer. Why should you add some of Octavia E. Butler’s science fiction novels to your summer reading list? Because she was a game-changer!
Why Octavia E. Butler’s Science Fiction Novels Deserve Your Attention This Summer
Octavia E. Butler wasn’t a published novelist until 1976, with her work Patternmaster. This novel was the first of four in the Patternist series. Goodreads details the series as “a secret history continuing from the Ancient Egyptian period to the far future that involves telepathic mind control and an extraterrestrial plague.” However, Butler didn’t really gain the recognition that she deserved until she published her novel Kindred in 1979. The African American female protagonist is able to time travel back and forth between 1970s Los Angeles and a 19th-century Maryland plantation. Not only did Butler contribute to the genre of science fiction, but she personally pushed the boundaries of societal norms and offered a broader expanse of character perspectives. During Butler’s time, the genre of science fiction was dominated by white males. Luckily, Butler was able to extend the audience of science fiction by including African Americans, feminists, and general fans of science fiction. She’s just as important now as her contributions were then. Plus, you’ll love her dystopian themes. Even though some years have passed, her literary works are still as relevant as they were when they were published.
Do you remember how crazy everyone was going over rompers when they came back in style a couple of summers ago? If you loved that trend, good news, rompers are still in for summer 2018! But if you want something a bit more daring, with a classy twist, why don’t you try out a full-length jumpsuit? The jumpsuits out there right now range from just about every style you could dream of pulling off! Sporty, classic, chic, bohemian, edgy—you name it, there is a jumpsuit for the vibe you want to exude. Here are some of the best jumpsuit styles of 2018.

In the past year, chokers have made a serious comeback on every trend radar across the globe. While the bold trend seems to be settling down again, one aspect of the choker is only just making its fierce debut. Denim chokers are the new subtlety that provides a unique twist on the classic necklace. Perfect for any outfit pairing, the choker will give you that small touch of denim every outfit in 2018 needs.
Feel free to get creative and make your own denim choker or leave it to the experts and buy one from Forever 21. The Denim Skinny Choker Set features a skinny denim choker and a black faux suede choker with a lobster clasp close. For such a low price, this set is definitely a must-have on our accessories list.
One of our favorite pieces from the denim comeback trend this season is the long-sleeved denim shirt. Versatile for every occasion, this long lined shirt can be worn unbuttoned with an under shirt, buttoned up with leggings for a more relaxed look, or tucked into jeans or a skirt for a more flirty take.
The 1969 Denim Western Shirt from Gap has a very neutral shade for all your pairing needs along with snap cuffs, a point collar and snap-flap patch pockets on the front. Dress this shirt up with white jeans and nude heels for brunch and drinks.
Denim Mini Skirt
Pop and Lock White Denim Mini Skirt ($49, lulus.com)
Putting a twist on the always reliable jean shorts, the denim mini skirt is a movement we are 100 percent behind. Once popular in the 90s and early 2000s, the new denim skirt features a more polished look with highwaisted bands, longer hemlines, and dramatic buttons. Switch up the colors of your skirts from the classic jean-blue to white, black and even maroon. Match with crop tops or a tucked-in flowy shirt and either boots or sandals to make a statement this season.
If you’re looking for a great design and style of mini skirt, consider starting with Lulu’s Pop and Lock White Denim Mini Skirt. With trendy belt loops, pockets, a frayed hem and bold branded button, their skirt exemplifies the all-jean-everything trend.
There are so many combinations with denim that make it a perfect and dependable fabric. And while there will be plenty of new trends breaking out throughout 2018, we think the denim forecast is here to stay. Get your fill of denim and let us know which styles are your favorite!

Earrings can be simple like a pair of everyday studs, or they can be daring and dangly like a pair of ornate chandelier earrings. Unfortunately, earrings tend to be the piece of jewelry that get left behind and forgotten since most women opt to wear their hair down over their ears. A simple way to dress up an outfit, especially if you don’t feel like doing your hair but still want to add some pizzaz, is by adding over-the-top earrings. It’s the easiest trick in the book!
Rather than appearing untamed by throwing you hair in a bun, or maybe it’s second day hair and you didn’t have time to wash it, an up ‘do now looks as if you styled your hair to show off your fabulous earrings. A tip for extra ear candy for those with double earlobe piercings: wear a statement earring in the first hole and a simple stud in the second hole. A little goes a long and it’s all about the accessories, baby. Click through to check out the earrings trends to try this spring!
Velvet has been huge this season, and it doesn’t seem to be leaving anytime soon. From complete velvet pieces to subtle trimmings and linings, velvet is all over the fashion scene. The fabric is edgy and sexy, and has come a long way from the gothic-esque era. Check out our top 4 perfect pieces to satisfy your velvet frenzy.
Viera Velvet Bralette, Nastygal.com, $24
The Viera Velvet Bralette from Nasty Gal will be your savior this season. The plunging neckline makes the crushed burgundy piece provocative. Try wearing it under a leather jacket with a pair of black high-waisted jeans for a rock-n-roll look. It even looks great underneath a low-cut shirt.

Are you obsessed with leggings? If so, you need to get your hands on the Lyssé Mara Velvet Leggings. It’s a fun take on the basic black legging look by adding some pizazz with the shine of velvet. Leggings that are made from thin fabric sometimes end up being see-through and show your undergarments, but the Lyssé leggings are thicker and warmer. Winter can have us feeling blue, but we’ve decided to wear the season out in gray. Out of all its various shades, pigments, and patterns, such as marble and gray leopard, gray captures the essence of tranquility, peace, and balance. We’ve listed our favorites in the fashion game to show you how we are gawking over color since it’s all about gray!
Balfern Leather Biker Jacket, Allsaints.com, $625
All Saints [pictured above] is the king of leather jackets. With that being said, we opted out of the classic black biker jacket and spiced up our look with a light gray jacket. Known as one of their best sellers, the Balfern biker jacket is made from soft leather and fits slim. The zip sleeves and belt buckle waist is rock star perfection in our book. The gray off the shoulder sweater from H&M is flirty, yet casual when tucked into a pair of light wash denim jeans. The v-neckline adds a little extra pep to this versatile piece and can be worn with a leather skirt for an evening look. The taupe/gray tote by YSL is absolutely stunning in the crocodile stamped leather. The bag features top handles and the option of a shoulder strap. One detail a bag must always have – a full zip top for keeping belongings safe – makes this tote a favorite of ours. What better way to watch the time go by than with the Monterey watch by Kate Spade. The timeless watch features a mother of pearl dial with crystal accents. The gray leather strap combined with gold metal is timeless and will complete any look.

Hi, dolls! I’ve always been a sucker for anything that’s leopard print. I think the wild eye-catching staple is chic and fabulous, while also being neutral, too. It can be a little flashy at times, but it’s all about how you wear it. The key is to make sure you don’t over do the leopard print by wearing it with another detailed or ornate garment.
I definitely got the leopard obsession “from my mama.” She’s a leopard-aholic as well. Even when I’ve been asked what my favorite color is, my response has been “leopard.” I have everything in leopard including clothes, shoes, socks, purses, belts, jackets, shower caps, hair clips, makeup bags, bedding, pillows—you name it. My high school prom dress was a beautiful strapless champagne color with a subtle bronze leopard print. I see leopard as a year-round print because it looks nice in anything from a short summer dress to a winter coat. I personally prefer fall/winter clothes over spring/summer clothes since I love the coziness of layers and oversized sweaters.
The leopard print rabbit fur jacket by Elizabeth and James is lovely and luxurious. The smoky grey color and subtle black pattern tames the leopard factor down, but is still trendy for the winter. I really dig the rib neck trim on the wool sweater by J.Crew; it looks great with a wreath necklace. I’m all about rest and relaxation, and there’s nothing better than getting out of a hot shower and putting on warm (and also leopard) pajamas. The set by Ralph Lauren fits comfortably with the top’s front button closure and the elastic waistband on the pants. Handbags are my weakness, and the Lockett Petite purse by Jimmy Choo has exquisite detailing. Leopard handbags with red trims go beautifully together; the bright red is a great contrast to the dark print, and you can’t forget the gold chain strap that ties it all together.

The fall is all about layering up to keep warm during the chilly weather. Along with choosing to go with warmer clothing, you need the right accessories to play into your outfit as well.
Seeking Shade Hats come in handy when you don’t have the energy to do your hair, especially on second day hair. The wide brimmed hat from Zara feels like autumn in the lovely shade of olive green. With a subtle black trim detail, this hat is a great way to top off an outfit and is a great way to keep warm, too.
Wide Brimmed Hat, Zara.com, $29.90
Get Cozy An oversized scarf to throw around your neck on outings is an obvious must, and what’s more fun than a leopard scarf? The printed accessory from ASOS is super soft and is a great length to layer and wrap. It looks chic with a leather moto jacket or your favorite solid colored cardigan.
Oversized Lightweight Scarf, ASOS.com, $25.80
Throwback Choker necklaces have been the latest crazed accessory. From casual day outfits to intricate night outfits, both have been finished with the single strap necklace. The choker from BaubleBar is chic in black, but also comes in blue and maroon. Featuring a lobster clasp, the necklace might be hard to get used to at first, so make sure you adjust it to fit your neck.
Duchess Choker, $32, Baublebar.com
Pins Enamel pins are a fun and simple way to customize your clothing. Gypsy Warrior has a ton of quirky pins to choose from, such as a heart-shaped pizza and a Bowie-inspired lightening bolt. Try pinning them onto a denim jacket, vest, backpack, or purse for a one-of-a-kind look.
Happy fall, my favorite dolls! I don’t know about you, but I’m glad the summer heat is a thing of the past. It was one of the hottest summers we’ve had; therefore, I’m welcoming my favorite season with the biggest open arms. Everything from the weather and colorful leaves to the clothes and festive events is my favorite during the fall.
I’ve always incorporated a lot of denim into my wardrobe, especially on chilly days. It may not always feel like it, but denim garments always appear effortlessly comfortable, regardless of being fitted or not. Denim jackets remind me of the awesome ‘90s and I love how simple they are to style and layer. I remember one of my first denim jackets was from Abercrombie & Fitch. I shockingly still have it and have added a few silver studs to the pockets and back to make it my own. Everyone needs a classic denim jacket, so try rolling up the sleeves and adding some retro pins to customize your look. I love the twist of denim on the standard parka by MOTO. The dark denim is a fun game changer and I love how cozy it looks and feels. Complete with a hoodie and tons of pockets, this grungy parka is a must.
For the past few years, I’ve been digging the stretchy jeans from Express. They always fit well and have tons of different styles and fits. I don’t know how people wear stiff jeans on a daily basis—it’s so uncomfortable; I can barely stand the feeling while I’m wearing them for a few seconds in the fitting room.
The denim skirt from Urban Outfitters is such a steal for $59. The mini denim number can be worn year-round, even in the winter with a pair of black opaque tights. With the A-line silhouette and button closures, this flattering skirt looks cute with a crewneck sweater. Get your denim on and enjoy the beauty of fall!
