Avril Lavigne’s New Single ‘Head Above Water’ is Powerful and Inspiring

by

Avril Lavigne, the singer known for her edgy, punk attitude and alternative style, is finally back. After five years of no releases, Avril is at it again. She’s been promoting her upcoming album on social media for weeks now, but the wait for a sneak peek is over.  Avril Lavigne’s new single ‘Head Above Water’ is a ballad about her struggle with Lyme Disease. Three years ago, Lavigne revealed that she was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. But now that her new album is closer to fruition, she’s been even more vocal about how the disease has made its mark on her music.

Her Letter to Her Fans

Avril posted a letter to her fans on her official website last week, explaining how music was able to help her through “the worst years of [her] life.”

I was able to turn that fight into music I’m really proud of. I wrote songs in my bed and on the couch and recorded there mostly as well. Words and lyrics that were so true to my experience came pouring out of me effortlessly. Truly… by keeping my spirits up, having goals to reach and a purpose to live for, my music helped to heal me and keep me alive.

Lavigne wrote the album during the toughest moments of her life. Lyme Disease left Avril bedridden for five months, according to her 2015 interview with People. The first song she wrote was “Head Above Water.” In a statement to People, Lavigne discussed a night where she believed she was dying. “I had accepted that I was going to die…I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed, ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the songwriting of this album began.” Although it’s extremely rare to die from Lyme Disease, the symptoms can be debilitating.

Avril’s struggle with Lyme Disease inspired the new album, and clearly the newly released single. The song expresses a helpless, but powerful feeling of wanting to stay alive. More than a typical, sad ballad “Head Above Water” is powerful and inspiring. Rather than giving in to her struggles, the singer expresses her desire to continue on and regain her strength. The lyrics are honest as she sings, “Yeah my life is what I’m fighting for / Can’t part the sea, can’t reach the shore / And my voice becomes the driving force.”

Leopard Print is the New Neutral

by

The most anticipated trend is finally here, and we are so here for it! Leopard print is the new nude this season. You can spot leopard print clothing and shoes in almost every collection this season.  Every fashionista has been waiting their whole life for this moment in fashion, and now that’s it’s here, we are totally thriving. It was no surprise that leopard print is the new neutral; leopard print is a combination of the two most iconic neutral colors, black and brown. For years leopard print has always been looked at as a wild-print. If you’re wearing leopard print you know you’re going to a party, like did you even go out if you aren’t wearing some form of leopard print? Didn’t think so.

Leopard print has always been the cherry on top of the perfect outfit, whether you are using leopard print shoes as an accent piece or perhaps a leopard print clutch. But now, the tables have turned, it is now not only socially acceptable but also considered super trendy to wear a leopard print dress, coat, pants or shirt. Add a solid color accent piece to complete your look, like a bold red or pink purse with matching shoes, this will leave you looking chic, yet edgy.

There are two types of people in the fashion world, people who hate animal prints and people who love them. Leopard print is super bold, so when you’re wearing anything leopard print, wear it with confidence. While wearing anything leopard print, you are bound to turn heads and draw attention to yourself, but who’s complaining? Although leopard print is now considered a neutral, it is still considered a bold/loud print. With this being said, make sure you do not mix other patterns and prints while wearing leopard print, play it safe with solid colors.

Let’s talk accessories, there is a multitude of options you can do to spice up leopard print. Gold jewelry is always a safe option, but if you’re feeling a little riskier you can always turn to bold colors like hot pink and orange. Play up your leopard print outfit with red lipstick or play it down with nude lipstick. Being that leopard print is so bold on its own, there isn’t a need to add too many accessories to your outfit.

Channel your inner wild side and start adding some leopard print to your wardrobe! Neiman Marcus is your one stop-shop this season, you will literally leave a hole in your wallet after leaving Neiman Marcus, but trust me, it’s totally worth it. You can find the hottest leopard print trends from your favorite designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Alice + Olivia, Tom Ford and Alexander Wang. Browse through their website and check out their large variety of coats, shoes, shirts and pants, you’re bound to find the purrfect outfit.

The Rising Power of Streaming: Netflix is Now a Top Contender for The Emmys’

by

Awards season is fast-approaching. This year’s list of Emmy nominations dropped Thursday and it’s becoming clear that top networks like HBO have something to worry about. Netflix’s vast expansion of original streaming content is growing and growing. And with that, so are the Emmy nominations. Netflix has nabbed a total of 112 noms for their originals, which just beat HBO’s 108. It’s impressive to say the least. Thanks to their originals—such as GLOW, The Crown, and Stranger Things to name a fewNetflix has jumped from their 2015 bottom spot on the nomination list to the top in 2018.

Why Netflix is Now a Top Contender for The Emmys’

It took Netflix about five years since they debuted their first original to climb to the top of the nomination charts. According to an article from The Verge last year, Netflix “has only climbed the ladder by strategically playing the odds. The company is almost doubling its nomination count every year, but it’s also producing a mind-boggling 600 hours of content and spending $6 billion a year to do so.” The success can also be attributed to the streaming interface allowing Netflix to track viewer habits, and thus provide more original content based upon viewer preferences. Well played, Netflix, well played.

Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, Saoirse Ronan, and Timothée Chalamet Slated to Star in Greta Gerwig’s Adaption of ‘Little Women’

by

It is confirmed that Greta Gerwig, the director of “Lady Bird,” has signed an all-star cast of actors on for her upcoming film version of “Little Women,” which is based on the classic novel of the same name from Louisa May Alcott. Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, Saoirse Ronan, and Timothée Chalamet are all to star in Greta Gerwig’s Adaption of ‘Little Women’. Jo and Meg are, respectively, Saoirse Ronan and Emma Stone. Timothée Chalamet is playing Laurie and Meryl Streep is Aunt March. With a lineup of actors like this, it’s hard to feel anything but excited about the film. To make it even more interesting, Gerwig is making the brave decision to frame her version of “Little Women” from the second half of the novel. This is something no past director of “Little Women” has done. With this in mind, the film will focus on the March sisters becoming young adults, with less emphasis on the first half of the story.

Why Gerwig’s Version of ‘Little Women’ Will Be Different

As one of the film’s producers, Robin Swicord, put it, Gerwig’s adaption will “really [take] a look at what it is for a young woman to enter the adult world.” The fact that Gerwig has made the decision to focus on the sisters becoming young women is pretty revolutionary, as past adaptations of the film were based upon the whole novel, rather than the second half of the book. According to the Los Angeles Times, the film will include scenes from the sisters’ childhood, as the story jumps “back and forth in time” and “past memories [illuminate] themes of identity, the search for self-esteem, and the deep, complex bonds among sisters.” So Gerwig’s version will indeed make references to important moments, but in such a way that is unique from past adaptions of the novel.

Netflix’s ‘Anne with an E’ Actress Amybeth McNulty Talks About Nasty Criticism

by

The Anne of Green Gables reboot, Anne with an E returns on Netflix with season two. Although there are a lot of fans of the update, there are a faire share of critics. Some seem to think that Anne with an E is a far cry from the 1985 miniseries with Megan Follows. Whether you like the reboot or not, it’s clear that many take it a step too far with rude, unwarranted comments. Actress Amybeth McNulty talks about nasty criticism in a recent interview with Independent.

Amybeth McNulty’s Attitude Toward Unnecessary Criticism is Golden

Amybeth was fifteen when she read the initial responses from online trolls about Anne with an E. Most of these were based solely on McNulty’s appearance. McNulty voiced her shock and initial feelings to Independent.

“Bearing in mind this was the first thing I had ever really done that was really that big, I never expected criticism, because they hadn’t even seen my performance yet. I remember specifically the first 12 comments were just so nasty towards me and specifically towards my appearance. It really hit me. I was 15 when that trailer released and that’s such a tender age.”

She has agreed to take the high road, moving forward with her head held high. After letting the bad vibes roll off of her back, McNulty has stated that “in the end I’m just doing my job…and the criticism is not going to change anything I’ve done or will do in the future.”

The Best On and Off-Screen Kisses for International Kissing Day

by

In case you haven’t already heard, today is international kissing day. That’s right, there is a day dedicated to celebrating kissing. A quick Google search will yield several articles about this common show of affection and why it is significant. This international recognition began in 2006 and since then, people take July 6th to appreciate their significant other, their children, and their family with the simple, but meaningful gesture. Whether you’re appreciating a loved one or the mere connection that we all share as human beings, it’s important to remember that we all need a little love in our lives. To celebrate today, let’s take a look at some of the best on and off-screen kisses.

International Kissing Day: Some of the Best On-Screen Kisses

Alfred Hitchcock’s “Notorious”

This one is for the film buffs out there who know their classic cinema. Or for those of you who don’t, here’s why this scene is so effective. The famous director, Alfred Hitchcock, found a way around the 1940s film Production Code’s ban on lengthy kisses. At the time, on-screen kisses weren’t supposed to last longer than three seconds. Hitchcock cleverly bent the rules by creating a two-and-a-half-minute kissing scene. Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman didn’t actually break that three-second lip-lock. Instead, they kissed for three seconds, took breaks to deliver lines, and then began kissing again. It was utterly genius and seamlessly executed. If you haven’t seen this kissing scene, you may be underestimating the power of the on-screen kiss.

Again, it’s another classic, but come on, who can deny the chemistry between Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler? The film, based on Margaret Mitchell’s novel of the same name, is set in the backdrop of the American Civil War. O’Hara and Butler are perhaps one of the most notoriously tumultuous couples to ever grace the silver screen.

This kiss is pretty epic and it’s not just because it’s from a Star Wars film. The chemistry between Han and Leia is something that we all feel, thanks to Harrison Ford and the late Carrie Fisher’s portrayals. Han and Leia are a perfectly relatable couple and that’s what makes the payoff so great.

Why You Should Add Octavia E. Butler’s Science Fiction Novels to Your Summer Reading List

by

If you’re in the process of creating that summer reading list, then you’d better pay attention. You probably saw that Google doodle of Octavia E. Butler on June 22nd, without even realizing who she was or why. How many of us actually take the time to stop and click on Google’s featured doodles? Octavia E. Butler, a science fiction writer, would have celebrated her 71st birthday on Friday, June 22nd. Google chose to honor this pioneering lady on her would-be birthday— and rightfully so. Butler was born in the city of Pasadena, California in the year 1947. She battled dyslexia, but she didn’t let that stop her from achieving her dream of becoming a writer. Why should you add some of Octavia E. Butler’s science fiction novels to your summer reading list? Because she was a game-changer!

Why Octavia E. Butler’s Science Fiction Novels Deserve Your Attention This Summer

Octavia E. Butler wasn’t a published novelist until 1976, with her work Patternmaster. This novel was the first of four in the Patternist series. Goodreads details the series as “a secret history continuing from the Ancient Egyptian period to the far future that involves telepathic mind control and an extraterrestrial plague.” However, Butler didn’t really gain the recognition that she deserved until she published her novel Kindred in 1979. The African American female protagonist is able to time travel back and forth between 1970s Los Angeles and a 19th-century Maryland plantation. Not only did Butler contribute to the genre of science fiction, but she personally pushed the boundaries of societal norms and offered a broader expanse of character perspectives. During Butler’s time, the genre of science fiction was dominated by white males. Luckily, Butler was able to extend the audience of science fiction by including African Americans, feminists, and general fans of science fiction. She’s just as important now as her contributions were then. Plus, you’ll love her dystopian themes.  Even though some years have passed, her literary works are still as relevant as they were when they were published.

Ewan McGregor is to Play Danny in the ‘Shining’ Sequel ‘Dr. Sleep’

by

Attention fans of “The Shining”: Ewan McGregor is to play Danny in the ‘Shining’ sequel ‘Dr. Sleep.’  Danny Torrance will be back on the screen in 2020 in the horror classic’s sequel. King fans will finally get to go see the much-anticipated film adaptation thanks to Warner Bros.’  Talk of the Warner Bros’ adaption of “Doctor Sleep” started years ago. However, it hasn’t come to fruition until now. Set to direct is Mike Flanagan. No stranger to working on Stephen King projects, he recently directed the Netflix version of King’s “Gerald’s Game.” Thanks to the success of 2017’s “IT,” King’s projects are being sped along for the enjoyment of viewers.

For those of you who haven’t read the novel, “Doctor Sleep” starts up where “The Shining” left off. Danny is an adult now, haunted by the memories of the Overlook Hotel. Not unlike his father, he develops anger issues and an alcohol addiction. We follow Danny as his powers return with sobriety. Torrance finds a useful avenue for his gift at a hospice, where he helps the dying. He soon meets a young girl with striking abilities and discovers a way to increase his powers.

“The Shining” is a horror movie classic, and although the film didn’t perform so well upon its release, many horror fans consider the Stanley Kubrick film to be one of the best. The sequel possesses great promise to become yet another film classic, especially with McGregor set to star.

Trend Alert: Chokers Are Making a Comeback

by

We can thank 2015 for the resurgence of 90’s grunge. I own at least ten different flannels which, you know, I naturally tie around my waist. Oh, yes. It was so nice to see items from my childhood come back into my life. Ridiculously heavy or high platforms, acceptable bare midriffs and we can’t forget… chokers! My go-to choice was always the tattoo choker. However, since the world we live in is all about standing out with that big statement piece, the fashion industry decided to change it up and pay homage to the long history of chokers.
Hate to say it but chokers have been around for quite sometime. I’m talking about as far back as the 1800s! ‘90s weren’t trendsetters. It just so happened, history was repeating itself and evidently, it’s doing it again. You may be like me taking baby steps into the choker-mania, as I call it. But, if you’re a bold, fierce fashionista – that I suspect most of our readers are – here are some chokers you can opt for instead! BY ASHLEY BULAYO
